Compatibility with google Find Tags #29

Open

Description

@jam-2x4

Hey! This is a very cool repo, and i just set up a google find hub tag as a POC and thought it couldn't be too hard to integrate functionality for those in this app

There's a repo, GoogleFindMyTools i think, which is a very good starting point. I've already converted it into an API just for my own use...

I was planning on modifying this app to work with google tags, and was just wondering if anyone finds it interesting and could explain how i could add or fully replace the data source

I mean for my personal usage I'd just remove all apple find my compatibility and replace it with google but if I'm going to share my changes with the world I'd have to add it as a secondary data source and that would mean quite a few more complex changes...

I'll add more details when i have time

    Hi @GetNameSniped , I think that's a great idea actually! I don't have any of those myself (I got Samsung ones) but adding more tags was on the nice-to-have list: https://github.com/parawanderer/OpenTagViewer?tab=readme-ov-file#contributing

    I was wondering if more people would be interested in extending this UI with the other tags because it seemed like such an obvious feature request. But yeah I was basically also waiting on the interest, because in my case I could just have the official Samsung app on the same phone and it'd just work even if it was annoying 😅

    But yeah, I think you basically will need to tweak the UI behaviour quite a bit. Probably add a new DB table for tracking the Google tags. Probably also add some polymorphism in the UI pieces that control displaying and renaming the tags, etc. Maybe add an indicator somewhere in the UI that says what type of tag your tag is. And of course, in my current design, the app is gated behind the Apple login and you're forced to log in to the Apple account before you can use it -- if you'd like to avoid that, you'd basically need to change the entry point to the app to the MapsActivity and make the Apple account login optional via settings, adding some logic like "don't fetch apple tag data unless you're logged in to the Apple account".

    I'm happy to point you at any files you need to make your changes. I won't necessarily be able to contribute huge chunks of code right now (working on some large projects, which is also why a few requests here are now pending) but happy to review changes, make tiny fixes/tweaks/suggestions on MRs, and test them out on my emulator when I have some time!
