apr code eval: task suite, sandbox, metrics and nightly receipts (APR-CODE-EVAL-001) #5342

Closed as not planned

Description

@noahgift

Scope: The implementation stages of the apr code evaluation (spec work in #5282): task-suite schema and loader, a hermetic sandbox runner, the verdict and metric engine (pass@k, Wilson CI), the agentic driver, contamination control, and receipts from a nightly CPU/GPU run.

Why it matters: apr code needs a measured pass rate before any claim about coding quality; the spec defines it, these rows build it.

Done when: A nightly run on CPU and GPU writes a receipt with pass@1 and its confidence interval over the dated task suite, run in the sandbox with no network.

Epic: #4000. Folded under triage rule 7b (2026-10-14): each row below was its own issue, closed as not planned and kept here as a sub-ticket. Reopen an issue when its work starts or its PR opens.

    E2 (#5283) remainder, 2026-10-15. The la-0.71 build has the schema and loader (FALSIFY-ACE-TASK-*), but no suite manifest. Spec §3 lists six suites.

    • smoke is built on la-73/5288-code-eval-nightly @ a87d828e0e. It has 8 hand-written MIT tasks, 2 per kind (crates/aprender-code-eval/suites/smoke/). All 8 are pinned to one rust:1.93-slim digest. Contract apr-code-eval-smoke-v1:

      • FALSIFY-ACE-SMK-001..004: green.
      • FALSIFY-ACE-SMK-004 is the §8 check: two seeded runs are byte-identical apart from timing. This is also the apr code eval E5: apr code driver — agentic loop + edit-format adapters #5286 acceptance line.
      • FALSIFY-ACE-SMK-005 (--ignored, docker): green in 162 s. Every null edit fails, every gold edit resolves three times in a row, and two seeded runs in the real sandbox are the same run.
    • Sandbox fix in the same branch. The wrapper copied the task with cp -a, which cannot preserve ownership under --cap-drop ALL. Every real container run therefore exited 125 before any test started. It now uses cp -R.

    • Still open under E2, with no owner yet. These are the importers at a pinned upstream commit and sha256, one per third-party suite:

      • function: EvalPlus HumanEval+ / MBPP+
      • edit: Aider polyglot
      • repo-lite: SWE-bench Verified, at most 50, with per-instance images pinned by digest
      • terminal: Terminal-Bench, at most 30

      The fresh suite, written after the cutoff, is open too.
