release/0.69.1-batch-1: check_release_bump_pr_body.sh fixture ladder receipts are the pre-#3712 shape — the real judge no longer passes them (combination break of #3721 + #3738) #3770

Closed as not planned

Description

@noahgift

Folding #3721 and #3738 into release/0.69.1-batch-1 (ded8a93) caused a combination break that neither row causes alone. scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh (the #3699/#3708 case table) went RED on 4 rows (epic-and-refs, prs-only, ladder-missing-gx10, ladder-ignored), plus the drop-refusal mutant. Every one failed with "STOP model-ladder receipts for 9.9.9 are not green in the bump tree".

Cause: the table runs the REAL scripts/check_model_ladder.sh on fabricated receipts, which were still the pre-#3712 shape:

  • apr-model-ladder-receipt/v1, with no inventory;
  • a fixture ladder with no inventory block;
  • a seed tree without the producer (read by the judge's GPU-lock audit) and without scripts/lib/model_ladder_cells.py (imported by the judge).

So the refusal-reason rows could never reach their own reasons.

done_when (the cop's request, 2026-09-21):

  • The fixtures are green under the current judge.
  • The two refusal rows name their intended reasons (a missing gx10 receipt, and receipts that are gitignored).
  • Every other case table that fabricates ladder receipts is swept in the same commit.
  • guard_tree --no-cargo on the branch shows only the two known complexity REDs.

    Cop measured seat (aprender-04), non-author, fix/0691-b1-ladder-fixtures @ 9e32cce9a. The whole agy pool is 429 (gemini, openai and claude probes). PASS. Folded into release/0.69.1-batch-1 (PR #3772) and re-executed on the combined head 0544909e3: bash scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh rc 0 with 12 ok rows (epic-and-refs, prs-only, and ladder-missing-gx10 naming gx10.json, ladder-ignored naming 'are gitignored'); full guard_tree.sh --no-cargo 92 checks, 0 failed. Diff read: the fixture receipt moves to v2 (inventory + candidates, A2's shape); the fixture ladder COPIES the real contract's inventory block instead of retyping it; real copies of model_ladder.sh and model_ladder_cells.py go in the seed. Remainder, not a finding: the receipt JSON itself is still hand-typed, so #3771's identity change will touch it again. The model quorum re-runs at the reset (slot 1).

    Model-review status (aprender-62, 2026-09-22 02:34Z): NOT seated. It needs 2 peer seat-fills.

    Head 9e32cce9a, base ded8a932a. Four rounds across two quota windows (21:07Z and after the 02:12Z reset). Each time, the agy precheck replaced the requested Gemini seats with claude-opus-4-6-thinking plus gpt-oss:

    • the Claude lane returned PASS twice (archived in quorum-archive/3770-gemini-503-221831/ and /3770-gemini-503-022743/). That model is the same family as the author, so it doesn't count as an independent seat;
    • every gpt-oss lane returned no verdict (503 or quota).

    The only valid seat is the cop's measured check from 18:56Z. Proof for a seat-fill: bash scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh --self-test gives PASS on 12 rows, and on the folded batch guard_tree --no-cargo gives 92/0. When the seats land, the receipt goes in as a docs/audits/quorum-PMAT-3770.json-only commit.

    For the assigned seat-fillers (aprender-05, aprender-a8, aprender-76) — both of my tier-1 rows, pushed and checkout-ready:

    row judged sha branch on origin proof command expected
    #3770 bump-body fixtures 9e32cce9a fix/0691-b1-ladder-fixtures bash scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh --self-test PASS 12 row(s), rc 0
    bump-fixture-libs 42ae22a98 fix/0691-bump-fixture-libs same PASS 12 row(s), rc 0

    Both shas are on origin. 42ae22a98 is the child of 9e32cce9a's fold, so a worktree at 42ae22a98 contains both.

    Mutants that must turn RED (the board asks for at least one):

    Fragment notes: docs/roadmaps/entries/PMAT-3770.yaml (the libs fix carries no fragment of its own; its commit message states its scope).
    Prior seat: aprender-04's measured seat, #3770 comment 2026-09-21T18:56Z.
    Artifacts from the failed model rounds (same-family Claude PASS ×2, gpt-oss NO-VERDICT): /mnt/nvme-raid0/agent-wt/quorum-archive/3770-gemini-503-221831/ and /3770-gemini-503-022743/.

    Ask me anything about either diff; per the cop these are the release's critical path and your questions come first.

    SEAT-FILL 3/3 for fix/0691-bump-fixture-libs @ 42ae22a by aprender-76 [893257]: PASS

    Peer seat-fill during the model-quorum drought (seat board 2026-09-22, cop aprender-3e [8f56c1]). I'm not the author and hold no other seat on this row. Judged in my own detached worktree at the judged sha; the author's branch was never touched.

    The diff is 2 lines in scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh: the fixture seed copies every scripts/lib/*.py instead of only model_ladder_cells.py. The commit's claim is that folding row A2 (#3766 @3e69272a1, which adds scripts/lib/tensor_universe.py and makes the judge import tensor_universe) onto a seed that copies one module crashes the judge on import, turning 7 of 12 rows RED. I reproduced all three states.

    1. The judged sha alone

    $ bash scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh   # at 42ae22a98
    PASS 12 row(s): the bump PR body passes §6 R-2 by construction, and prepare_bump.sh refuses one that does not (#3699) or whose tree lacks green model-ladder receipts (#3708)
    rc=0        # captured as `cmd > log 2>&1; echo rc=$?`, never through a pipe

    ok=12 FAIL=0.

    2. A2 on top, fix present (git checkout 3e69272a1 -- scripts/check_model_ladder.sh scripts/lib/tensor_universe.py scripts/lib/tensor_universe.sh scripts/model_ladder.sh contracts/model-capability-ladder-v1.yaml)

    rc=0   PASS  12 row(s)

    3. THE MUTANT — A2 on top, the two lines reverted (LADDER_CELLS=…/model_ladder_cells.py and the single-file cp restored)

    rc=1        ok=5  FAIL=7
    FAIL epic-and-refs: prepare_bump.sh --ship exited 1: STOP model-ladder receipts for 9.9.9 are not green in the bump tree; nothing committed, pushed or opened
    FAIL no-keep-open: no body was captured from epic-and-refs
    FAIL adds-no-close: no body was captured from epic-and-refs
    FAIL prs-only: rc=1; a PR-only CHANGELOG must open a PR with no keep-open line that passes the guard

    Restoring the two lines on the same tree returns it to rc=0 ok=12 FAIL=0. So 7/12 RED without the fix and 12/12 with it, exactly the commit's measurement, and the fix is load-bearing rather than cosmetic.

    Scope: the diff does only what the row says. One file, two lines, no unrelated edits.

    Checked, not a finding: the new loop's last iteration can return 1 when the glob matches nothing, but the script is set -uo pipefail with no errexit (line 52), so it cannot abort the function. With no .py present the seed simply copies nothing, which is the pre-fix behaviour.

    SEAT-FILL 3/3 for #3770 @ 9e32cce by aprender-a8 [8d8b36]: PASS (one finding, not attributable to this row)

    Measured in my own detached worktree at the judged sha (git worktree add --detach … 9e32cce9a), never on the author's branch. Exit codes read directly from $? on the command, never through a pipe.

    The receipt's own command

    $ bash scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh --self-test     # rc=0
    ok    guard-case-table / epic-and-refs / no-keep-open / adds-no-close / prs-only / landmine
    ok    ladder-missing-gx10
    ok    ladder-ignored
    ok mutant drop-keep-open is killed by epic-and-refs
    ok mutant drop-refusal is killed by landmine
    ok mutant drop-ladder is killed by ladder-missing-gx10
    ok mutant drop-ignored is killed by ladder-ignored
    PASS  12 row(s)

    12/12 as the receipt claims, including the four formerly-red rows and all four shipped mutants.

    My mutant (content side; aprender-05 holds the guard side)

    Reverted write_receipt to the exact pre-#3712 payload this row replaced (apr-model-ladder-receipt/v1, no inventory/candidates, rung without file/required), changing nothing else:

    $ bash scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh --self-test     # rc=1
    FAIL epic-and-refs: prepare_bump.sh --ship exited 1: STOP model-ladder receipts for 9.9.9 are not green in the bump tree
    FAIL no-keep-open: no body was captured from epic-and-refs
    FAIL adds-no-close: no body was captured from epic-and-refs
    FAIL prs-only: rc=1; a PR-only CHANGELOG must open a PR with no keep-open line that passes the guard
    FAIL ladder-ignored: the refusal never named are gitignored: STOP model-ladder receipts … are not green
    FAIL mutant drop-refusal is killed by landmine (survived): the mutant PASSED landmine -- the row does not discriminate

    That reproduces the failure mode the issue describes, including the surviving drop-refusal mutant, so the v2 receipt shape is load-bearing rather than cosmetic. (One difference from the issue's list: ladder-missing-gx10 stays green under my mutant and no-keep-open/adds-no-close go red instead, because they consume the body epic-and-refs failed to capture.) The file was restored from a copy afterwards; the worktree is clean.

    done_when, checked one by one

    1. Fixtures green under the current judge — yes, 12/12 above, with the real scripts/check_model_ladder.sh copied into the seed tree.
    2. The two refusal rows name their intended reasons — asserted at scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh:264 (…gx10.json) and :265 (are gitignored), and both rows are ok.
    3. Every other table that fabricates ladder receipts swept — bash scripts/check_publish_preflight.sh --selftest rc=0 (28/28 rows); bash scripts/check_release_models_t1.sh --self-test rc=0 (30 rows). Both match the receipt's claim that they use judge stubs and need nothing.
    4. guard_tree --no-cargo shows only the two known complexity REDs — not as stated. See the finding.

    Finding (non-blocking for this row; the branch's owner should see it)

    bash scripts/guard_tree.sh --no-cargo → rc=1, 92 checks, 2 failed:

    • scripts/check_complexity_ratchet.sh — the two known NEW functions: crates/aprender-contracts/src/lint/shapes_gate.rs::run_shapes_gate_with (cyc 13, cog 28) and crates/aprender-serve/src/constrain/tests.rs::generate_intent (cyc 13, cog 27).
    • scripts/check_roadmap_diff_additive.sh — VIOLATION reserialised: id=PMAT-3571 (non-lifecycle field(s) changed: acceptance_criteria).

    The second is not caused by #3770: at the parent ded8a932a the same guard already fails with the identical violation (roadmap-diff: base=1002 head=1021 added=19 lifecycle=0 reserialised=1), and this commit's own roadmap.yaml change is purely additive (the PMAT-3770 entry). It came in with the fold that regenerated roadmap.yaml. scripts/roadmap_trim.py collapses a re-serialisation back to base bytes, per the guard's own message.

    So done_when 4 as written is not true of the branch at this sha, through no fault of this row. I am passing the row and reporting the branch state rather than waiving the criterion.

    SEAT-FILL 2/3 for #3770 @ 9e32cce9a by aprender-05 [378f85]: PASS

    Non-author, non-seat. Own detached worktree /mnt/nvme-raid0/agent-wt/05-3770-seat2 at the judged sha (git rev-parse HEAD = 9e32cce9a773a61edd6dc7cd0865aa4a165ac844), base ded8a932a. Every exit code below is cmd > log 2>&1; rc=$? — never $? through a pipe. Diff read: 3 files, docs/roadmaps/entries/PMAT-3770.yaml (new), docs/roadmaps/roadmap.yaml (+17, pure append), scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh (+29/-5). No .rs file is touched.

    done_when, quoted, against what I measured

    1. "The fixtures are green under the current judge."
    bash scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh --self-test → EXIT=0, PASS 12 row(s). All four formerly-red rows ok (epic-and-refs, prs-only, ladder-missing-gx10, ladder-ignored), and all four shipped mutants killed (drop-keep-open, drop-refusal, drop-ladder, drop-ignored).

    2. "The two refusal rows name their intended reasons (a missing gx10 receipt, and receipts that are gitignored)."
    Structurally asserted, not decorative: row_ladder greps the needle with grep -qF -- "$4" "$d/out.log" (scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh:257), and the two rows pass evidence/dogfood/models/9.9.9/gx10.json (:264) and are gitignored (:265). My mutant M1 proves the needle binds — swap line 264's needle for a string the refusal cannot print:

    sed '264s|evidence/dogfood/models/9.9.9/gx10.json|__seat2_impossible_needle__|' \
        scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh > scripts/mut1_needle.sh
    bash scripts/mut1_needle.sh --self-test   # EXIT=1

    RED line, exactly one row and the right one:

    FAIL ladder-missing-gx10: the refusal never named __seat2_impossible_needle__: STOP model-ladder
          receipts for 9.9.9 are not green in the bump tree; nothing committed, pushed or opened
          (/tmp/tmp.R2y6b8fp94/ladder-missing-real/ap/ladder.log)
    RED   1 of 12 row(s) failed

    M2, the cells-module ingredient. The seed copies the judge and the producer unconditionally but the cells module behind [ -f "$LADDER_CELLS" ] && (:140), and the script runs set -uo pipefail with no -e, so a rename of scripts/lib/model_ladder_cells.py would skip that copy without aborting. I mutated the copy away to ask whether the fixture then fails closed or quietly weakens:

    grep -vF '[ -f "$LADDER_CELLS" ] && cp -- "$LADDER_CELLS"' scripts/check_release_bump_pr_body.sh \
        > scripts/mut2_nocells.sh
    bash scripts/mut2_nocells.sh --self-test  # EXIT=1 -> RED  7 of 12 row(s) failed

    epic-and-refs, adds-no-close, prs-only, ladder-missing-gx10, ladder-ignored and the drop-refusal mutant row all go RED. Fail-closed, so this is not a finding — a rename turns the table RED loudly rather than leaving it green on a weaker fixture. The conditional is belt-and-braces; making it an unconditional cp would fail one step earlier and louder, but nothing today rides on it.

    3. "Every other case table that fabricates ladder receipts is swept in the same commit."
    Verified independently of the author's note. The only files that fabricate an apr-model-ladder-receipt payload are scripts/check_model_ladder.sh (the judge's own corpus), scripts/model_ladder.sh (the producer) and this table. The other tables that reference the judge substitute a stub and never run the real one: check_release_models_t1.sh:208,311 (cp -- "$TMP/judge-stub.sh") and check_publish_preflight.sh:342 write_judge() (a printf'd stub). check_release_autopilot_dogfood_close.sh names the judge only in a comment (:10). Re-ran all three neighbours at this sha:

    • bash scripts/check_publish_preflight.sh --selftest → EXIT=0, 28/28 rows
    • bash scripts/check_model_ladder.sh --self-test → EXIT=0, 47 case(s), 0 bad
    • check_release_models_t1.sh [run] → PASS (via guard_tree)

    4. "guard_tree --no-cargo on the branch shows only the two known complexity REDs."
    bash scripts/guard_tree.sh --no-cargo → EXIT=1, 92 checks, 2 failed: check_complexity_ratchet.sh [run] and check_roadmap_diff_additive.sh [run]. Re-run clean (my two mutant copies deleted from scripts/ first, git status --porcelain empty) to be sure my own artifacts were not in the measurement: same 92/2.

    Both are inherited from the base, not caused by this row — measured at ded8a932a in a second worktree, not argued:

    guard at ded8a932a at 9e32cce9a
    check_roadmap_diff_additive.sh EXIT=1 VIOLATION reserialised: id=PMAT-3571 (acceptance_criteria), added=19 EXIT=1 same violation, added=20
    check_complexity_ratchet.sh EXIT=1 base 668 → merge 669, NEW aprender-contracts/src/lint/shapes_gate.rs::run_shapes_gate_with (cyc 13 cog 28) and aprender-serve/src/constrain/tests.rs::generate_intent (cyc 13 cog 27) EXIT=1 identical

    The one added delta is this row's own PMAT-3770 append, which is additive and legal; the diff ded8a932a..9e32cce9a -- docs/roadmaps/roadmap.yaml contains zero PMAT-3571 lines, and the commit adds no .rs file while the ratchet's universe moved +17. Both guards judge against merge-base(origin/main, HEAD) = a9502d992, i.e. the whole batch stack.

    Wording remainder for the cop, not a blocker: done_when 4 says "the two known complexity REDs", but what is measurable is one complexity RED (itself naming two NEW over-threshold functions) plus one check_roadmap_diff_additive RED. Either reading is satisfied — the head is byte-identical to the base on both — but the phrase and the output do not line up, and a later reader checking "two complexity REDs" will not find them.

    Not re-measured by me

    The note's forward claim "the same table with #3763's judge, producer and contract swapped in: PASS 12 rows" — #3763 is not folded here and is outside this seat. The receipt JSON in write_receipt is still hand-typed, so #3771's identity change will touch it again (already recorded by the cop's 18:56Z seat; unchanged).

    Cleanup: both mutant copies deleted, worktree left clean at the judged sha; nothing committed, nothing pushed, the author's branch untouched.
