Redirect pending jobs away from unreachable clusters - #133
Harshith-umesh wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
Pairs with the companion Hearth PR that quarantines a dead cluster's ResourceFlavor (zeroing its quota) when discovery fails repeatedly. - Add KueueClient.is_flavor_healthy(), reading the fournos.dev/healthy label Hearth sets on a ResourceFlavor (defaults healthy if the flavor is missing/unlabeled, for backward safety). - In reconcile_pending, if a not-yet-admitted job is hard-pinned to a cluster (spec.cluster) with hardware requirements (spec.hardware.gpuType) and that cluster is unhealthy, delete and recreate its Workload without the cluster pin. Kueue's native flavor fungibility then admits it onto any other flavor offering the same GPU type — no custom 'equivalent cluster' matching logic needed. - Lock-only jobs (cluster pinned, no hardware) are left alone: the user explicitly wanted that one cluster, so there's no equivalent to redirect to. - Track status.redirectedFrom / redirectCount to avoid redirect loops and to surface the event on the FournosJob. Added tests/unit/ (mock-based, no live cluster required) since the existing tests/ suite is integration-only against a live kind cluster, which wasn't available to verify against in this environment. 📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughKueueClient now checks ResourceFlavor health. Pending workloads pinned to an unhealthy cluster can be replaced without a cluster pin while retaining selected workload details. Reconciliation skips the usual pending-status path after a redirect. ChangesUnhealthy cluster redirect

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to When a pending job is redirected away from an unhealthy cluster, a failure while recreating its Workload can leave the job stuck in Pending with no Workload. Add handling for the failed create, and a way to recreate the unpinned Workload on a later reconcile, before merging. The live-cluster integration suite has also not been run. Pre-merge checks |

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
A failed create after the delete leaves the job without a Workload.
The redirect deletes the Workload and then creates a new one with the same name. The create can fail in two ways:
- The API server can still hold the deleted object, for example while a finalizer runs. The create then raises 409
AlreadyExists. - The create can raise any other
ApiException.
In both cases the redirect raises before it writes patch.status. On the next reconcile, get_workload_or_none returns None. reconcile_pending then logs "Workload not yet visible" and returns. Nothing in this path creates the Workload again, so the job can stay Pending forever. Handle 409 the same way _create_lock_workload does. Also make the "Workload missing" path able to create the unpinned Workload again when status.redirectedFrom matches spec.cluster.

Added
tests/unit/(mock-based, no live cluster required): the existingtests/suite is integration-only against a live kind cluster (Tekton + Kueue), which wasn't available in the environment this was developed in. The new subtree has its ownconftest.pythat shadows the parent's live-cluster autouse fixtures.pytest tests/unit/ -q→ 15 passed, covering redirect eligibility rules and thereconcile_pendingshort-circuit wiring.ruff check/ruff format --checkclean on changed/added files.Would appreciate a maintainer running the full
tests/integration suite against a kind cluster before merge, since I couldn't exercise the real Kueue admission path end-to-end here.Made with Cursor
