What

Revoke the automated approval when a Renovate PR loses the automerge label.

Closes #62

Why

The job only ran while the PR carried automerge or security, so the run for removing automerge was skipped and the earlier approval stayed.

Testing

make lint, scripts/check-reusable-permissions.sh and actionlint pass. There is no test harness for this workflow. The real check is a Renovate PR after release: approved, then automerge removed, and the approval should be revoked.

Notes for reviewers

  • The job now runs on every Renovate PR and rejects when automerge is missing. Non-automerge PRs (majors, dev-kit) start a short job that exits without approving.
  • Labels are read live via the API instead of from the event payload, since runs can finish out of event order. The final re-read before approving now also requires automerge.
  • Removing automerge revokes with a request-changes review, the same way a push onto the branch already does.
  • Known limits, unchanged by this PR: the reviews list is not paginated, and the reviewer match (github-actions*) would also revoke approvals from other GITHUB_TOKEN workflows.

Checklist

  • Tests added/updated, or confirmed that no tests are required
  • No breaking changes, or upgrade path documented above
  • Readable commit history (squashed and cleaned up as desired)
  • AI code review considered and comments resolved

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Renovate pull requests are no longer approved when the required automerge label is missing or removed.
    • Approval status is revalidated before approval, including when blocking labels are added.
  • Documentation

    • Updated documentation to clarify that automated approval is revoked when the automerge label is removed.

The job only ran while the PR carried the automerge or block label, so
the run for removing automerge was skipped and an earlier approval stayed.
The job now runs for every Renovate PR and rejects (revoking any earlier
approval) when automerge is missing.

Labels are read live via the API instead of from the event payload, since
runs can finish out of event order. The final re-read before approving
now also requires automerge.

📝 Walkthrough

The Renovate approval workflow now checks current pull request labels, revokes prior approval when the automerge label is absent, and rechecks labels before approving. The setup documentation describes the revocation behavior.

Current-label approval and revocation

The workflow runs for Renovate pull request events regardless of labels. It checks current labels, rejects and revokes approval when automerge is absent, and rechecks for the block and automerge labels before approval. The documentation describes revocation when automerge is removed.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes the required What, Why, Testing, Notes for reviewers, and Checklist sections. It explains the behavior, validation, known limits, and testing approach. The AI code review checklist item remains unchecked, but the description is otherwise complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #62 requires the Renovate author check to remain and the revoke path to run after automerge is removed. The workflow removes the job-level label condition, keeps github.event.pull_request.user.login == inputs.renovate-actor, reads current labels with gh pr view, and calls reject when automerge is absent. reject submits --request-changes when the latest automated review is approved. The final label recheck also prevents approval after label removal. The workflow documentation retains the unlabeled caller trigger. No issue-specific automated test harness is present or required by the issue.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed workflow comments document the new revoke behavior and the docs/NEW_REPO.md change documents that removing automerge revokes approval. Both changes support issue #62. No unrelated implementation or documentation change is shown in the pull request diff.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Without the label gate, removing automerge from a merged or closed PR
started the job and could post a request-changes review on it.
