What

Adds npm run dev:stack — one command to run the full SpaceApp stack from source after npm ci, per #65.

  • scripts/dev-stack.mjs — the orchestrator (up default, plus down / reset / status). Starts only PostgreSQL (pgvector) and Temporal in Docker, then the migrations, then the API (tsx watch), the Vite web dev server, the Temporal worker and the CLI host (packages/cli-host) from source. Prints the URL and the one-time owner setup token.
  • scripts/dev-stack.compose.yml — dev-only compose file for the two Docker services.
  • scripts/dev-stack-ci.mjs + .github/workflows/dev-stack.yml — headless CI driver and workflow.
  • scripts/tests/dev-stack.test.mjs — unit tests for the orchestrator's pure logic.
  • CONTRIBUTING.md — new "Run the full app from source" section (prerequisites, commands, ports, hot reload, macOS/WSL2 notes, troubleshooting).
  • apps/web/vite.config.ts — dev proxy target can be overridden with SPACE_API_ORIGIN (default stays 4910).
  • package.json — the dev:stack script. .gitignore — ignores .dev-stack/.

How it meets the acceptance criteria

  • Pinned images, never copied by hand: at startup the orchestrator parses the image + digest for Postgres and Temporal out of packages/run-spaceapp/templates/compose.yml and renders its own compose file into the state directory.
  • Isolation: compose project spaceapp-dev, state directory .dev-stack/, default ports API 14910 / Web 14911 / Postgres 15432 / Temporal 7233 (all overridable via environment, all bound to 127.0.0.1 only) — nothing collides with an installed SpaceApp on 4910/4911.
  • Secrets: DB password, session secret and owner setup token are generated per state directory with mode 0600, reused across runs, and never printed except the setup token. The normal owner setup flow works (setup token → create owner → sign in); the dev-login shortcut is explicitly not used.
  • Hot reload: API restarts via tsx watch, web hot-reloads via Vite, and changes under packages/* trigger a rebuild + restart of the affected consumer automatically.
  • CLI panes: OpenCode is installed pinned (@opencode/cli@2.0.32, the version pinned in the Dockerfile) into the state directory — not globally — and the *-vscode-parity wrappers and provider state also live there. No AI provider account is needed to reach the OpenCode terminal UI.
  • Failure surfacing: if any child process exits, the orchestrator fails immediately and points at that process's log file instead of hanging. /readyz reports ok: true with workflows enabled once the stack is up.

Tests

Unit tests (image/digest parsing from the install template, port-collision defaults, secret file permissions and reuse, compose rendering):

ℹ tests 8
ℹ pass 8
ℹ fail 0

Run outputs (Linux + macOS)

End-to-end output is produced by the Dev stack workflow added in this PR:

  • Linux — dev-stack job on ubuntu-latest: boots the stack with no TTY, waits for /readyz, completes owner setup over HTTP, opens the starter room's CLI pane through the API, then reset and verifies no container/volume/state is left.
  • macOS — dev-stack-macos job on macos-14: same driver end to end, with Docker provided by Colima (the platform setup the docs section recommends).

Links to both run logs are pinned in a comment below as soon as the workflow finishes. (My local dev machine has no Docker and runs Node 24 while the repo pins Node 22, so the local evidence is the unit tests above; the end-to-end runs are the CI jobs on Node 22, exactly as the issue's "How to test" describes.)

The "Verify export provenance" step is expected to fail on outside PRs per the issue text; every other check should pass.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds npm run dev:stack to run SpaceApp from source with PostgreSQL and Temporal in Docker. It adds stack lifecycle commands, readiness checks, process supervision, source watching, end-to-end CI on Ubuntu and macOS, tests, and contributor documentation.

Changes: Source-based development stack

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stack configuration and local services
scripts/dev-stack.mjs, scripts/dev-stack.compose.yml, .gitignore, scripts/tests/dev-stack.test.mjs
The runner validates ports, prepares marked state and secrets, derives service images from repository files, and renders Compose configuration for PostgreSQL and Temporal. Tests cover configuration, image parsing, secret permissions, reset guards, and rendered Compose output.
Startup, supervision, and source processes
scripts/dev-stack.mjs, package.json, apps/web/vite.config.ts
The runner builds workspaces, runs migrations, starts and supervises the API, worker, CLI host, and web server, and polls API readiness. It watches source changes and supports down, reset, and status. The root command starts the runner, and the Vite proxy supports a configurable API origin.
End-to-end CI validation and contributor instructions
scripts/dev-stack-ci.mjs, .github/workflows/dev-stack.yml, CONTRIBUTING.md
The CI driver checks readiness, owner setup, starter-room terminal state, and the CLI tasks endpoint, then resets the stack and checks cleanup. The workflow runs the check on Ubuntu and macOS 14. Contributor instructions cover setup, ports, source watching, platforms, and troubleshooting.

Explanation

All reviewed changes support [#65]. They add stack orchestration, Docker service configuration, CI coverage, unit tests, contributor documentation, the configurable web proxy, and ignored dev-stack state. The changes do not modify published images or the run-spaceapp launcher, add browser or companion services, add root-only features, or run provider CLIs other than OpenCode.

Explanation

[#65] The reviewable implementation covers the requested source stack, pinned image parsing, isolated loopback ports, protected state and secrets, owner setup, hot reload, OpenCode state, readiness and failure reporting, reset safeguards, CI drivers, and contributor documentation. The supplied PR material does not include the required Linux and macOS or WSL2 terminal-output records. The workflow definitions alone do not prove that those end-to-end runs completed successfully.

Resolution

Provide accessible Linux and macOS or WSL2 end-to-end run output, such as links to completed workflow logs, so the final acceptance criterion can be verified.

Extend the paths filter to cover the dev-stack inputs.

The repository does not require a CI run for every dependency file. These files affect the existing end-to-end check, so adding them is a recommended coverage improvement for currently working behavior, not a defect.

Include the dev-stack tests in the public test command.

CONTRIBUTING.md requires contributors to run npm test, but it does not require these particular tests to run. Since scripts/tests/dev-stack.test.mjs is not in the public test path, include it so npm test covers the new behavior. This is additional regression coverage, not a broken test workflow.

Restrict token permissions and credential persistence.

The workflow has no permissions: block, so the jobs use the repository default token scope. Both actions/checkout@v4 steps keep credentials in the local git config (zizmor artipacked). The jobs only read the repository.

Add permissions: contents: read at the top level. Set persist-credentials: false on both checkout steps.

Fail fast when the stack process exits during the readiness wait.

waitForReadyz() polls for up to five minutes without checking stackExit. The caller checks stackExit only after readiness succeeds, so an early stack exit can produce a generic timeout.

Require an active OpenCode session for the selected pane.

The current predicate accepts any terminal pane. It can pass when the pane has no active process. GET /api/panes/:id/cli/session is pane-scoped and returns null when no active session remains after host-state reconciliation. Require that response to contain a cli:opencode session. Do not require status === "RUNNING" here, because the endpoint already applies the active-session and host-state checks.

Suggested fix
-    const cliPane = panes.find((pane) => pane.mode === "TERMINAL" || pane.terminalRuntimeId);
+    const cliPane = panes.find((pane) => pane.mode === "TERMINAL" && pane.terminalRuntimeId === "cli:opencode");
     if (!cliPane) {
       throw new Error(`Starter room ${roomId} has no CLI pane. Panes: ${JSON.stringify(panes).slice(0, 500)}`);
     }
     process.stdout.write(`CLI pane present: ${cliPane.id} (mode ${cliPane.mode ?? "?"}, runtime ${cliPane.terminalRuntimeId ?? "?"})\n`);

+ const cliSessionResponse = await fetch(
+      `${apiOrigin}/api/panes/${encodeURIComponent(cliPane.id)}/cli/session?includeTranscript=false`,
+      { headers: authHeaders }
+    );
+    if (!cliSessionResponse.ok) {
+      throw new Error(`CLI session fetch failed: ${cliSessionResponse.status} ${await cliSessionResponse.text()}`);
+    }
+    const cliSession = await cliSessionResponse.json();
+    if (cliSession?.session?.runtimeId !== "cli:opencode") {
+      throw new Error(`OpenCode CLI session is not active: ${JSON.stringify(cliSession).slice(0, 500)}`);
+    }
+
     const tasksResponse = await fetch(`${apiOrigin}/api/cli/tasks`, { headers: authHeaders });

Update the `cliPane` selection and session validation in the room check so a
terminal pane alone is insufficient: require the selected pane to use the
`cli:opencode` runtime, then query its pane-scoped CLI session endpoint and
proceed only when the returned session has `runtimeId` `cli:opencode`. Preserve
the endpoint’s active-session and host-state checks; do not add a separate
`RUNNING` status requirement.

Do not throw cleanup failures directly from finally.

A failure in the try block can be replaced by a cleanup failure. For example, an owner-claim failure can be reported only as Containers left behind.

Collect cleanup errors and capture the primary error. After finally, rethrow the primary error with the cleanup diagnostics attached. Throw cleanup errors alone only when the primary operation succeeds. A throw placed after try/finally alone does not report cleanup errors when the try block already failed.

The applicable repository rule is ESLint’s no-unsafe-finally, enabled through @eslint/js’s recommended configuration. It is not a Biome rule.

Update the cleanup flow around the container, volume, and state-directory checks
to collect cleanup errors instead of throwing inside finally; capture the
primary operation error and rethrow it after cleanup with cleanup diagnostics
attached. If the primary operation succeeds, report any collected cleanup
errors, ensuring cleanup failures do not mask the original error.

Define services in Docker Compose | Docker Docs

<location>https://docs.docker.com/reference/compose-file/services/</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search4 [wordlim: 200] Published: 2 months ago; Crawled: today; Requires: Docker Compose 2.15.0 and later ... * `mode`: The permissions for the file to be mounted in `/run/secrets/` in the service's task containers, in octal notation. ... Note that support for `uid`, `gid`, and `mode` attributes are only implemented in Docker Compose when the source of the secret is `environment`. ... * `mode`: The file mode for the tmpfs mount as Unix permission bits as an octal number.

Defining a secret in the top-level `secrets` must not imply granting any service access to it. Such grant must be explicit within service specification as secrets service element.

#### Short syntax

The short syntax variant only specifies the secret name. This grants the container access to the secret and mounts it as read-only to `/run/secrets/<secret_name>` within the container. The source name and destination mountpoint are both set to the secret name.

The following example uses the short syntax to grant the `frontend` service access to the `server-certificate` secret. The value of `server-certificate` is set to the contents of the file `./server.cert`.

    `services:
      frontend:
        image: example/webapp
        secrets:
          - server-certificate
    secrets:
      server-certificate:
        file: ./server.cert`

#### Long syntax

The long syntax provides more granularity in how the secret is created within the service's containers.

  * `source`: The name of the secret as it exists on the platform.
  * `target`: The name of the file to be mounted in `/run/secrets/` in the service's task container, or absolute path of the file if an alternate location is required. Defaults to `source` if not specified.
  * `uid` and `gid`: The numeric uid or gid that owns the file within `/run/secrets/` in the service's task containers.
  * `mode`: The permissions for the file to be mounted in `/run/secrets/` in the service's task containers, in octal notation. The default value is world-readable permissions (mode `0444`). The writable bit must be ignored if set. The executable bit may be set.

Note that support for `uid`, `gid`, and `mode` attributes are only implemented in Docker Compose when the source of the secret is `environment`. When the source is a `file`, Compose uses a bind-mount under the hood which doesn't allow `uid` remapping, and these attributes are silently ignored.

The following example sets the name of the `my-token` secret file within the container, sets the mode to `0440` (group-readable), and sets the user and group to `103`. </excerpt>

Secrets | Docker Docs

<location>https://docs.docker.com/reference/compose-file/secrets/</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Published: 5 months ago; Crawled: yesterday; The top-level `secrets` declaration defines or references sensitive data that is granted to the services in your Compose application. ... * `file`: The secret is created with the contents of the file at the specified path. ... This is only supported by Docker Compose.

# Secrets

Secrets are a flavor of Configs focusing on sensitive data, with specific constraint for this usage.

Services can only access secrets when explicitly granted by a `secrets` attribute within the `services` top-level element.

The top-level `secrets` declaration defines or references sensitive data that is granted to the services in your Compose application. The source of the secret is either `file` or `environment`.

  * `file`: The secret is created with the contents of the file at the specified path.
  * `environment`: The secret is created with the value of an environment variable on the host. This is only supported by Docker Compose. It is not supported when deploying with `docker stack deploy`.

## Example 1

`server-certificate` secret is created as `<project_name>_server-certificate` when the application is deployed, by registering content of the `server.cert` as a platform secret.

    `secrets:
      server-certificate:
        file: ./server.cert`

## Example 2

`token` secret is created as `<project_name>_token` when the application is deployed, by registering the content of the `OAUTH_TOKEN` environment variable as a platform secret.

    `secrets:
      token:
        environment: "OAUTH_TOKEN"`

> Note
>
> `environment` secrets are not supported when deploying with `docker stack deploy`. Use `file` or `external` as the secret source instead.

Make the Temporal secret readable by its container user.

When the host UID is not 1000, the file-backed secret remains owned by the host user with mode 0600. The pinned Temporal image runs /bin/sh -ec as temporal (UID 1000), so cat /run/secrets/postgres-password fails with Permission denied. The shell exits before autosetup, and npm run dev:stack cannot start Temporal. Use an environment-backed Compose secret with explicit UID/GID settings, or otherwise render the mount with ownership readable by UID 1000. Keep the host secret at mode 0600.

Update the Temporal service’s postgres-password secret configuration so
`/run/secrets/postgres-password` is readable by the container’s `temporal` user
(UID/GID 1000), while keeping the host secret at mode 0600. Use an
environment-backed Compose secret with explicit UID/GID settings or another
mount configuration that provides the required container-side ownership;
preserve the `entrypoint` flow that reads the secret before starting
`autosetup`.

Guard reset so it deletes only a state directory that up created.

reset deletes config.stateDir recursively and checks only that the path exists. buildConfig sets that path from SPACE_DEV_STATE_DIR with no ownership check. If the variable points at an existing directory, such as a project folder or $HOME, reset deletes that directory. Issue #65 requires reset to remove only resources the dev stack created.

Write the marker only when commandUp creates the state directory. commandUp calls mkdirSync(config.logsDir, { recursive: true }), which creates the state directory only when it is absent. An unconditional marker would mark a pre-existing directory as owned. Check for the marker at the start of commandReset, before stopProcesses and docker compose down -v run.

Proposed fix
async function commandReset(config) {
+  const marker = join(config.stateDir, ".dev-stack-owned");
+  if (existsSync(config.stateDir) && !existsSync(marker)) {
+    throw new Error(`Refusing to reset ${config.stateDir}: it was not created by dev:stack (marker file missing).`);
+  }
   await stopProcesses(config);
   if (existsSync(config.composeFile)) {
     await dockerCompose(config, ["down", "-v", "--remove-orphans"], { allowFailure: true, stdio: "inherit" });
   }
   if (existsSync(config.stateDir)) rmSync(config.stateDir, { recursive: true, force: true });
   log("Dev stack removed: containers, volumes and .dev-stack state are gone.");
async function commandUp(config) {
   ...
-  mkdirSync(config.logsDir, { recursive: true });
+  const createdStateDir = !existsSync(config.stateDir);
+  mkdirSync(config.logsDir, { recursive: true });
+  if (createdStateDir) writeFileSync(join(config.stateDir, ".dev-stack-owned"), "");

Import writeFileSync from node:fs if the module does not already import it.

Review comment at @scripts/dev-stack.mjs at line 301:
Update commandUp to mark the state directory as dev-stack-owned only when
commandUp creates it, and update commandReset to verify that marker before
stopping processes or running Docker cleanup; refuse to reset an existing
unmarked directory, and remove the directory only after ownership is confirmed.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check the exiting child's own restarting flag.

restart() sets restarting on the old child, sends SIGKILL, and immediately calls start(). start() replaces the map entry with the new child.

If the old process exits more than 600 ms after SIGTERM, its exit event fires after the replacement. The handler then reads current as the new child. current.restarting is undefined, so the handler treats the planned restart as a crash. It sets this.failed and calls shutdown(1). This takes down the whole stack during hot reload.

Test the flag on the exiting child instead of on current.

official Docker PostgreSQL image POSTGRES_PASSWORD_FILE only initialized database existing volume password behavior

This is expected behavior—and exactly why volumes exist. ... The official PostgreSQL Docker image supports running initialization scripts automatically when the container starts for the first time. ... Create a `compose.yaml` file: ... Changing this variable after database creation has no effect—it only applies during the first run when the data directory is initialized. ... * Existing volume with old credentials: If you reused an existing volume, the password from the original initialization is still in effect.
If the directory is empty, the container runs `initdb` to create a new database cluster, then executes all scripts in `/docker-entrypoint-initdb.d/` in alphabetical order before starting PostgreSQL.

#### Supported file formats

Format  | Description
--- | ---
`.sql` | SQL commands executed directly
`.sql.gz`  | Gzip-compressed SQL files
`.sh` | Shell scripts executed with bash

> Important
>
> Initialization scripts only run when the PostgreSQL data directory (`/var/lib/postgresql/data`) is empty. If you mount a volume containing existing data, initialization is skipped. This behavior prevents overwriting existing databases.

### Mounting initialization scripts

Use Docker Compose to mount initialization scripts into the container. First, create a project directory:

    `$ mkdir -p postgres-project/init-db
    $ cd postgres-project
    `

Create a `compose.yaml` file:

    `services:
      db:
        image: postgres:18
        volumes:
          - ./init-db:/docker-entrypoint-initdb.d
          - postgres_data:/var/lib/postgresql
        environment:
          POSTGRES_PASSWORD: mysecretpassword

    volumes:
      postgres_data:`

All scripts in the `./init-db` directory execute when the container starts for the first time. This is great for bootstrapping databases.

### Initialization script example

Create a file named `init.sql` in your `init-db` directory:

    `CREATE TABLE users (
        id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
        email VARCHAR(255) UNIQUE NOT NULL,
        name VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,
        created_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP
    );`

This script runs automatically when the container starts for the first time, creating your initial database schema.

> Note
>
> Ensure initialization scripts have proper read permissions. If you encounter "Permission denied" errors, run `chmod 644 init-db/*.sql` to make the files readable by the container.

  * Verify the port mapping is correct:

    `docker port postgres-dev`

This should show `5432/tcp -> 127.0.0.1:5432` (or `0.0.0.0:5432` if bound to all interfaces).

  * Test PostgreSQL connectivity from inside the container:

    `docker exec -it postgres-dev psql -U postgres -c "SELECT version();"`

If this works but external connections fail, the issue is with port publishing, not PostgreSQL itself.

#### "Password authentication failed" or "FATAL: password authentication failed for user"

  * Confirm the password: Verify you're using the same password set in `POSTGRES_PASSWORD` when you started the container.
  * Existing volume with old credentials: If you reused an existing volume, the password from the original initialization is still in effect. The `POSTGRES_PASSWORD` environment variable only sets the password during the first database initialization. To reset:
    * Remove the volume: `docker volume rm postgres_data`
    * Or connect with the old password
    * Or change the password after connecting: `ALTER USER postgres WITH PASSWORD 'newpassword';`
  * Try connecting with password prompt: `psql -h localhost -U postgres -W` (the `-W` flag forces a password prompt)

## Docker Secrets

As an alternative to passing sensitive information via environment variables, `_FILE` may be appended to some of the previously listed environment variables, causing the initialization script to load the values for those variables from files present in the container. In particular, this can be used to load passwords from Docker secrets stored in `/run/secrets/<secret_name>` files. For example:

```console
$ docker run --name some-postgres -e POSTGRES_PASSWORD_FILE=/run/secrets/postgres-passwd -d postgres
```

Currently, this is only supported for `POSTGRES_INITDB_ARGS`, `POSTGRES_PASSWORD`, `POSTGRES_USER`, and `POSTGRES_DB`.

## Initialization scripts

If you would like to do additional initialization in an image derived from this one, add one or more `*.sql`, `*.sql.gz`, or `*.sh` scripts under `/docker-entrypoint-initdb.d` (creating the directory if necessary). After the entrypoint calls `initdb` to create the default `postgres` user and database, it will run any `*.sql` files, run any executable `*.sh` scripts, and source any non-executable `*.sh` scripts found in that directory to do further initialization before starting the service.

Remove the stale PostgreSQL volume when the state secret is recreated.

When .dev-stack is deleted without reset, ensureSecrets generates a new PostgreSQL password. The existing Compose volume retains the database initialized with the old password. Temporal can then fail during docker compose ... up --wait, and the migration can fail at client.connect() because it uses the new SPACE_DATABASE_URL.

After rendering the compose file, remove the dev-stack volume when the PostgreSQL password was absent before ensureSecrets. Run this cleanup before starting the services.

Use one cleanup path for all startup failures.

A readiness timeout reaches main().catch, which calls process.exit(1) without calling Supervisor.shutdown(1). On non-Windows platforms, the detached API, worker, CLI host, and web processes can remain active. Compose services can also remain active.

The same gap affects failures after docker compose up but before Supervisor is created. Workspace builds, OpenCode installation, and migrations can fail and reach main().catch without cleanup. A readiness-only catch is not sufficient.

Make commandUp own cleanup for every failure after Compose starts. The cleanup must stop supervised processes when they exist and run docker compose down. Preserve the existing signal and unexpected-process-exit cleanup paths.

Review comment at @scripts/dev-stack.mjs at line 545:
Update commandUp to use one cleanup path for every failure after docker compose
up, including failures before Supervisor is created and readiness timeouts at
waitForReadyz(config). Stop supervised processes when a Supervisor exists, then
run docker compose down; preserve the existing signal and
unexpected-process-exit cleanup paths.

- reset: require an ownership marker (.dev-stack-owned) in the state directory and refuse repo-root/home/filesystem-root targets before deleting anything
- compose project name now derives from the state directory path (spaceapp-dev-<hash>), so two checkouts on one machine no longer share containers and volumes
- tests: 12/12, adding project-name derivation, reset guard, dangerous-path refusal and Temporal port evidence checks

Note: the installed stack never publishes Temporal 7233 on the host (no ports mapping in the install template), so the dev-stack default stays at 7233.

Stop mapping failed cleanup inspections to empty output.

commandReset ignores a failed docker compose down -v, then deletes the state directory. The CI cleanup check treats a failed docker ps or docker volume ls as "nothing found". The check can then print Reset verified while containers or volumes remain. Errors from these two inspections should fail the check.

In the cleanup verification flow, remove the error-to-empty-output fallbacks
from the Docker inspections in `execFileAsync` calls for `docker ps` and `docker
volume ls`. Let either inspection failure propagate so the check cannot report
successful cleanup when verification did not complete; preserve the existing
checks for leftover containers and volumes.

Follow-up commit 4d7403a addresses the automated review findings:

  • Reset safety: reset now requires an ownership marker (.dev-stack-owned, written on up) inside the state directory before deleting anything, and refuses repo-root / home / filesystem-root targets outright.
  • Isolation: the Compose project name is now derived from the state directory path (spaceapp-dev-<hash>), so two checkouts on one machine no longer share containers or volumes. Unit tests cover derivation stability and uniqueness.
  • Temporal port: verified the installed stack never publishes 7233 on the host (no ports: mapping in packages/run-spaceapp/templates/compose.yml; 7233 is container-network only), so the dev default does not collide - a regression test locks this in.

Tests: 12/12 pass (node --test scripts/tests/dev-stack.test.mjs).

Migration notes for existing users of the first version:

  • After upgrading, down/status point at the new project name; containers started under the old spaceapp-dev project need a one-time docker compose -p spaceapp-dev down.
  • State directories created by the old version have no marker, so the first reset will refuse; run up once to stamp the marker (or remove the directory manually).

CI: the workflow run is still waiting on maintainer approval (standard for fork PRs) - happy to share the Ubuntu/macOS run logs as soon as it runs.
