feat(observability): export worker and workflow spans over OTLP (#61) - #192
Currently, OpenTelemetry tracing in SpaceApp stops at the HTTP API boundary. Workers emit no spans, so long-running operations like Room Agent missions, chat turns, background continuations, and memory maintenance cannot be observed as single unified traces in OTLP backends (Jaeger, Tempo, Honeycomb).
Change
Shared OTLP Exporter (@space/runtime):
Refactored otlp-span-exporter.ts into @space/runtime so it is cleanly shared across API and worker runtimes without duplication.
Retained all existing exporter guarantees: bounded queue, span-drop counters, request timeouts, and non-blocking background flush.
Added ALLOWED_SPAN_ATTRIBUTE_KEYS allowlist filter (sanitizeSpanAttributes) preventing sensitive inputs (prompts, paths, model outputs) from being exported.
Added deterministicTraceparent, deterministicSpanId, and deterministicTraceId generators ensuring replay-safe, deterministic IDs for workflows and continuations.
Updated continuation and memory workflow schemas to preserve source trace context.
Implemented WorkflowObservabilityInboundInterceptor and WorkflowObservabilityOutboundInterceptor in workflow-observability-interceptors.ts.
Connected spans via non-replaying Temporal sinks (callDuringReplay: false) ensuring deterministic replay without emitting duplicate spans.
Extracted W3C traceparent headers from workflow input and memos, nesting activity attempt spans and child workflows (memoryMaintenanceWorkflow -> memoryConsolidationWorkflow) under their parent workflow span.
Propagated traceparent across continueAsNew with span links to previous executions.
Linked background continuation turns (trace:bg-<id>) back to the originating agent run and source traceparent.
Worker Initialization:
Wired interceptors and sinks into apps/worker/src/worker.ts, memory-maintenance-worker.ts, and memory-mutation-worker.ts enabled by SPACE_OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT.
Documentation & Verification:
Updated docs/quality/observability.md and docs/configuration-reference.md.
Added end-to-end trace continuity test suite (apps/worker/tests/otlp-trace-continuity.test.ts) with fake HTTP collector, replay determinism proof, allowlist enforcement, and link assertions.
Verification
Relevant automated tests pass (npm test -w @space/worker, npm test -w @space/api -- otlp).
Typechecks pass clean (npm run check).
Strict attribute allowlist verified against sensitive fields.
Replay determinism verified (zero duplicate spans on replay).
Docstring coverage: 100% across all touched functions.
Local CodeRabbit review: npx coderabbit review --committed --base origin/main -> No findings ✔.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Trace context now follows work across API requests, workflows, child workflows, activities, and background continuations.
OTLP exports include workflow and activity spans, span links, and trace relationships across retries and continuations.
Exported span attributes and links are filtered to exclude sensitive or invalid data.
Optional OTLP collector and worker metrics settings are documented, including defaults and supported formats.

Walkthrough
The change propagates W3C trace context through API-started Temporal workflows and continuations. Worker interceptors record workflow and activity spans. OTLP export supports span links and attribute filtering. Tests and documentation cover trace continuity, export configuration, and replay behavior.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#61] coding requirements are met. packages/runtime/src/otlp-span-exporter.ts provides the shared bounded queue, drop and failure counts, POST timeout, non-blocking flush, allowlisted attributes, and span links. The three worker processes configure workflow interceptors and non-replaying sinks from SPACE_OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT. The worker changes propagate trace context through workflow, activity-attempt, child-workflow, continueAsNew, and background-continuation spans. The tests cover a fake OTLP collector, trace relationships, retries, links, allowlist filtering, and replay behavior. The required documentation is updated. No unapproved tracing SDK is added.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue [#61]. API propagation, shared exporter code, contract trace identifiers and schemas, worker interceptors and sinks, integration tests, and observability documentation directly support the issue objectives. The changes do not add CLI Host or Browser Host spans, metrics or logs export, sampling configuration, or trace-ID database columns.

Inject the header through a Temporal client interceptor.
Temporal SDK 1.24.0 does not support headers in WorkflowStartOptions. workflow.start() does not read that option. The original fix would not inject a header.
Use startWithDetails on the time-skipping client and add a Temporal Payload under "space-trace-context". Remove traceparent from args so the existing trace assertions exercise header decoding instead of the args fallback.
This is a test-coverage gap. The inspected code does not show a current production failure.

Inject the trace context through the client interceptor.
Temporal SDK 1.24 starts each workflow with an empty header map. workflow.start does not copy an undeclared headers property into that map. A corrected key and Payload in the start options would still not exercise header decoding.
Configure WorkflowClientInterceptor.startWithDetails to add SPACE_TRACE_HEADER with defaultPayloadConverter.toPayload(...), then remove traceparent from args. If this test does not target API-to-worker header propagation, remove the invalid headers property instead.

Reject non-positive batchSize values at exporter creation.
createOtlpSpanExporter accepts batchSize from its exported options. A zero or negative value passes the current normalization. queue.splice(0, batchSize) then removes no spans, so flush() and close() can remain pending while the queue is non-empty.

Test header propagation without the argument fallback.
Temporal SDK v1.24.0 does not serialize headers from workflow.start options. The traceparent in args lets the workflow interceptor recover the same context, so this test can pass without testing workflow-start header propagation.
