refactor(contracts): add deterministic timestamp handling to contract tests - #372
Standardizes deterministic ledger timestamp handling across the Soroban contract test suites (credit-score, governance, model-attestation, oracle-network, and fraud-detect) and documents per-contract timestamp assumptions and boundary inequalities in docs/contracts/README.md.
Changes Included
contracts/credit-score/src/lib.rs:
Added a set_time(&env, timestamp) helper in #[cfg(test)] mod test and initialized setup(&env) at an explicit baseline timestamp (INITIAL_LEDGER_TIME = 1_700_000_000) instead of relying on the implicit 0 ledger default.
Updated authorized_scorer_updates_score to advance ledger time (1_700_000_100 -> 1_700_000_250) and assert distinct updated_at timestamps across score transitions.
Added score_timestamps_cover_zero_and_u64_max_boundaries verifying 0 and u64::MAX timestamp boundaries.
contracts/governance/src/lib.rs:
Added boundary tests for proposal creation and voting/finalization windows:
test_vote_succeeds_at_last_valid_second_and_finalizes_at_exact_end_time (vote at end_time - 1 = 1999, finalize at end_time = 2000).
test_vote_rejected_at_exact_end_time_boundary (vote at current_time == end_time == 2000 panics with "voting is closed").
test_finalize_rejected_one_second_before_end_time_boundary (finalize at current_time == end_time - 1 == 1999 panics with "cannot finalize before voting period ends").
contracts/model-attestation/src/lib.rs:
Added set_time(&env, timestamp) and initialized setup(&env) at INITIAL_LEDGER_TIME = 1_700_000_000.
Updated full_valid_lifecycle_create_update_invalidate to step ledger time explicitly (1_000 -> 2_500 -> 4_000) and verify created_at, updated_at, and invalidated_at at each stage.
contracts/oracle-network/src/lib.rs:
Added one_second_past_threshold_age_is_rejected_as_stale (10_000 - STALE_THRESHOLD_SECS - 1) alongside exactly_threshold_age_is_still_current (10_000 - STALE_THRESHOLD_SECS) to verify the exact staleness boundary (300s accepted vs. 301s rejected with Error::StaleData).
Initialized setup_test_fixture() at INITIAL_LEDGER_TIME = 1_700_000_000 and added test_velocity_window_exact_boundary_vs_one_second_expired verifying inclusive velocity window edge (t = 13_600) vs. one-second expiration (t = 13_601).
docs/contracts/README.md:
Added ## Deterministic Ledger Time & Boundary Semantics table documenting timestamp assumptions and boundary inequalities across all contracts.
Testing done
cd contracts && cargo fmt --all --check
cd contracts && RUSTFLAGS="-D warnings" cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets
cd contracts && cargo test --workspace (repeated runs across all workspace crates: common-utils, credit-score, fraud-detect, governance, model-attestation, oracle-network — 116/116 passed)
cd contracts && cargo build --workspace --release --target wasm32-unknown-unknown
Checklist
Contract tests pass repeatedly without relying on wall-clock timing
Boundary timestamps are covered where relevant (0, u64::MAX, end_time - 1 vs end_time, STALE_THRESHOLD_SECS vs STALE_THRESHOLD_SECS + 1, velocity_window vs velocity_window + 1)
Time assumptions are documented for contributors in docs/contracts/README.md
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Clarified contract behavior at timestamp boundaries, including proposal deadlines, transaction velocity windows, and stale oracle readings.
Tests
Added checks for exact timestamps across score and model-attestation record lifecycles, including edge values.
Documentation
Documented how contract timestamps are determined and the relevant time boundaries.
The PR makes ledger timestamps explicit in contract test setup and adds checks for timestamp recording and boundary behavior. It also documents timestamp assumptions for the affected contracts. Several fraud-detect assertion messages now use Rust’s captured-identifier formatting.

Summary
Set ledger time and verify timestamp records contracts/credit-score/src/lib.rs, contracts/model-attestation/src/lib.rs, contracts/fraud-detect/src/test/mod.rs
Test setup sets ledger timestamps explicitly. Credit-score tests check creation and update timestamps, including 0 and u64::MAX. Model-attestation tests check creation, update, and invalidation timestamps. Fraud-detect setup initializes the ledger timestamp.
Check time-window and governance boundaries contracts/fraud-detect/src/test/*, contracts/governance/src/lib.rs, contracts/oracle-network/src/lib.rs, docs/contracts/README.md
Tests check the inclusive fraud-detect velocity-window boundary, governance proposal and voting boundaries, and rejection of stale oracle readings. The documentation records timestamp assumptions and boundaries. Fraud-detect assertion messages use captured-identifier formatting; the assertions remain unchanged.
Clarify the oracle error documented for stale readings. The identified issue is limited to documentation and does not block merging.

Title check
The title clearly and concisely describes the main change: deterministic timestamp handling for contract tests.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The timestamp work stays within issue #322. The change from a length comparison to String::is_empty() in governance/src/lib.rs does not affect timestamp handling. The captured-identifier formatting changes in fraud-detect test files also do not affect timestamp behavior, boundary coverage, or test determinism. These changes have no demonstrated connection to issue #322.
Resolution
Remove the unrelated String::is_empty() refactor and formatting-only changes, or document a concrete connection to issue #322.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 20 functions across 8 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)
Resolution

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #322 requires deterministic contract tests, explicit ledger timestamps, boundary coverage, no wall-clock dependency, repeated contract-suite runs, and cargo test --workspace. The reported changes add explicit timestamp setup and boundary tests for credit-score, governance, model-attestation, oracle-network, and fraud-detect. docs/contracts/README.md documents the timestamp rules. The PR reports the required contract commands and 116/116 workspace tests passed. The PR evidence does not establish that the Contracts CI pipeline passed.
Resolution
Provide the reviewable Contracts CI result, including formatting, warning-free clippy, workspace tests, and the release Wasm build. The implementation and local test evidence otherwise support the coding requirements in issue #322.

Qualify the oracle error at age 301 seconds.
An age-301 reading does not always make aggregate return Error::StaleData. If one other reading is fresh, aggregate returns Error::InsufficientSources; it returns StaleData when no fresh readings remain. State that the reading is excluded from the fresh-source count, and limit the StaleData claim to the all-stale case. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
