Measure and document experimental Python and JavaScript guest support #22

Description

@ctfbruce

Problem

Experimental Python and JavaScript sample instructions exist, but there is no measured supported runtime/resource matrix for these guests.

Proposed change

Reproduce the existing guest build paths and measure artifact size, startup latency, memory and supported host operations before deciding whether either language warrants maintained packaging.

Acceptance criteria

  • Recorded toolchain versions reproduce a hello and supported networking sample on an owned local runtime, or the unsupported operations are explicitly documented.
  • Measurements include artifact size, compile/startup time and peak memory against the supported Go baseline.
  • A support decision records a maintenance owner and tested feature matrix; no language parity is promised from compilation alone.

Current evidence

validation gap. Backlog classification is based on source inspection; this issue does not claim a new runtime reproduction.

Dependencies

  • #4 — Execute previous-version WASM guests in an ABI compatibility suite

Priority

Optional expansion. This does not block the working local team alpha; select it after the required contracts and maintenance ownership are established.

Validation must use owned local fixtures on supported Linux environments. Record the implementing merge request and relevant test results before closing this issue.

SDK and APIVersioned interfaces, usable clients and reproducible examples.
TestA specific missing validation gate or reproducible test harness.
Validation gapBehavior may exist in part; the required operating evidence or test gate remains absent.

PR #408 merged as aa3ac6d. The repository now retains the JavaScript input, pinned runtime archive hashes, measurement runner and exact reproduction commands. The runner measures artifact size, compilation/startup and peak memory against Go, and verifies every retained sample outcome. Python’s missing-encodings outcome and filesystem diagnostic remain explicit; compilation alone is not networking support.

The candidate CI and merged-main CI, including their separate guest source gates, passed. The measured feature matrix and instructions are reproducible. This stays open for the explicit support decision and accountable maintenance owner; neither language is newly advertised as equivalent to the Go guest SDK.
