What a user gets

An existing stuck-sweep finding now closes only on the source's delivery, pickup or explicit custody evidence. A failed wake becoming unconfirmed, a fresh human-notification post window, an unreadable registry or a larger reporting-age threshold no longer closes the finding merely by removing it from a report.

Claimed items returned to pending participate in the existing stalled-pickup derivation, even with a retained failed wake. Human notifications remain separate from agent wakes. Legacy human notices without owner-notification history can resolve from their existing item-scoped posted receipt when the recipient is known to be human; a registered alias requires a readable registry. A destination reroute needs a new matching notification episode, because the old receipt carries no recipient key, even if it arrives late. An unrelated legacy human receipt still cannot resolve an agent wake.

Refs #1419, following #1449 and #1811. Closure notes name the evidence and record stuck-sweep@system as the actor while preserving finding ownership. Existing typing-guard, Steering and quiet-release holds retain their custody semantics.

How you verified it

Source: f28fc3536da3b27c560cf73b37fb111bedd1f685, based on c30438c4102775007dff33ea4f9e5b1eb653ec69.

  • Regressions reproduced on the preceding implementations: 10 initial behavior failures, 3 retained-wake/claimed-pending failures, 4 legacy-notice failures, 2 legacy reroute failures and 4 registry-outage park failures. Legacy cases use migrated SQLite with the unbackfilled owner-history columns cleared. They cover direct asks, human parks, reserved references, registered aliases, recipient changes and receipts arriving before or after the change. A control confirms that rerouting only a parked item's asking agent keeps the same human recipient.
  • Nine related daemon files: 287 passed, including all 32 source-evidence cases, human custody, pickup/input waits, wake retries, quiet custody and recovery lookup.
  • npm ci, npm run build, npm run lint and the docs guard passed. The final build, lint and nine-file run cover the source above.
  • CI for the current f28fc353 head passed all ten jobs after an upstream rerun, including portability; the daemon suite had 22,561 passed / 18 skipped / 5 todo. The CI checkout was verified against this head and its test merge. The first attempt had 22,560 passed / 1 failed: compaction-command-submission.test.ts expected a submitted compaction receipt but got not_sent before cancellation. That unchanged file exercises the compaction enforcer and transport, not the modified sweep; its local isolated recheck passed all 45 tests. Its wall-clock-sensitive fixture is being investigated separately. The rerun does not establish the original CI delay's cause.
  • Local npm test on the first PR revision stopped at repository checks: 323 passed, 4 failed and 1 skipped. Three failures require POSIX modes the Windows/DrvFS mount does not preserve. The CLI-license fixture selected the real TypeScript compiler because its temporary directory was nested beneath repository dependencies. These are local limitations, not a claim that local full-suite validation passed.

Anything you were unsure about

The tests drive the real sweep and queue repository against migrated SQLite with synthetic transport/notification records, including a recording gateway fixture for quiet custody. No live provider or Slack account was exercised. The scenario runner cannot set up these receipts or invoke the sweep, so the regression uses repository-level fixtures.

Unconfirmed evidence keeps a finding open until positive evidence or an explicit disposition arrives. Missing source rows also retain this conservative behavior; queue items currently have no deletion path. A held wake's closure names its custody rather than claiming delivery or pickup.

Without owner history, a legacy park requires an unambiguous history: no earlier notice or reroute, and only receipts or asking-agent reroutes after the park. A re-park or another ambiguous append cannot prove the recipient stayed the same. This includes parks created while the registry was unreadable; the current blocked state alone cannot bind an old person's receipt to the new person.

  • One concern per PR; no version bump; no CHANGELOG.md edit
  • Tests added or updated where the change is testable
  • I listed the checks I ran, their results, and any checks I could not run

Walkthrough

The stuck sweep now requires source evidence to resolve delivery and unclaimed findings. It also checks claimed work in both pending and in-progress states. Tests and architecture documentation cover evidence checks, closure records, and quiet-hold custody.

Changes: Stuck-Sweep Resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Determine source evidence
packages/daemon/src/domain/queue-stuck-sweep.ts, packages/daemon/test/queue-stuck-sweep-resolution.test.ts, packages/daemon/test/quiet-hold-custody.test.ts
The sweep checks source state and evidence, including claims, wake results, notification receipts, and hold custody. The claimed-row scan includes pending and in-progress rows with a claim. Tests cover missing or unrelated evidence, registry outages, notification episodes, rerouting, and readable or unreadable quiet-hold custody.
Apply evidence-gated closure

Delivery and unclaimed findings remain open without source evidence. Closure notes record evidence, and automatic closure records stuck-sweep@system as the transition and event actor. Documentation and tests cover closure behavior and preserved ownership.

  • mvschwarz/openrig#2151: The changes update resolution for undelivered-wake and stalled-pickup findings, but do not cover every requested startup-window or successor-link change.
  • mvschwarz/openrig#1419: The changes keep findings open when source markers disappear without delivery or pickup evidence.
  • mvschwarz/openrig#331: The changes update stalled-pickup derivation and require source evidence before closure.

Possibly related PRs

Explanation

The title "fix(daemon): require source evidence to resolve stuck findings" matches the main change. The PR closes stuck-sweep findings only when source evidence exists. The raw summary confirms changes in queue-stuck-sweep.ts, its tests, the quiet-hold custody test, and the architecture doc. The title names the daemon scope and the core behavior change, and it is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.

Thanks, @Aschenbath, for #2153, which, as its description says, makes an existing stuck-sweep finding close only on the source's own delivery, pickup or custody evidence, following #1449 and #1811 on #1419. We've received it, and it's with our review desk. We'll follow up here.

Thanks again, @Aschenbath, for picking up the open part of #1419. We've read #2153 at 776a63c7 from the source (we haven't run it), and the approach is right: it finishes where #1449 and #1811 left off, and a finding now closes only on real delivery, pickup or custody evidence, never because an item dropped out of a report. Claimed pending items reuse the existing pickup derivation, notices to a person stay separate from messages to agents, and the tests tell the cases apart.

One change, please: a legacy notice to a person can't close after it's delivered. Take a pending item addressed to a person that predates the owner-notification history (migration 076 adds those columns without backfilling older transitions), so it has no owner notification. If its notice first failed and later posted, with a valid item-scoped posted receipt, main closes the undelivered-human-notice finding. With this PR, deliveryResolutionEvidence in queue-stuck-sweep.ts needs either humanNotificationPostedThisEpisode, which returns false with no owner history (queue-repository.ts), or latestOwnerNotificationForQitem, which is null for that item. So the finding stays open after a real delivery, and its recovery item keeps prompting its owner. Could you let that legacy case resolve from evidence of that same human delivery (the item-scoped posted receipt the ledger already accepts), while keeping your new rejection of an unrelated legacy receipt as evidence for a message to an agent? One test for a legacy notice with no owner notification, which fails today, would pin it.

Optional, only if it's easy: when the source item is missing (getById returns null), the finding now stays open for good, where main closed it. Nothing deletes queue items today, so it's close to theoretical, but treating a missing source as closing evidence ("source gone") would stop a recovery item that could never close.

Do not assume a blocked row retained its recipient.

If a legacy notice is rerouted to another person and parked while the registry is unavailable, the park creates no new notification episode. After the registry recovers, a late receipt for the former person passes this check and closes the finding without delivery to the new person. Track recipient changes and require evidence that the receipt belongs to the current park. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Thanks again, @Aschenbath, for the quick turnaround: e57fa016 lets a legacy notice to a person close on its posted receipt, as we asked, and c15dc3f2 follows up CodeRabbit's point. We've read the new head from the source (we haven't run it). The reroute check is the right idea, and it matches how the repository already treats a modern ask after a reroute: an old receipt can't show who has the ask now. Every live destination change goes through the one fallback path, so a rerouted pending ask can't close on the old person's receipt; a held item keeps its person when only the asking agent moves; and the new tests check the finding itself, with early and late receipts.

One change, please: a held notice whose person changes while the people registry can't be read can still close on the previous person's receipt. Take a legacy item, with no owner-notification history, held on person A with an undelivered-notice finding. While the registry can't be read, the hold moves to person B through a reserved human reference. That passes validation, because reserved references don't need the registry, but classifyOwnerNotification returns nothing without the registry (queue-repository.ts), so no new notification episode is recorded. When A's old receipt later posts, the blocked-item exemption in the new check accepts it, since the item is blocked, B is a person and the legacy ledger says "posted", and the finding closes although B was never told. Could a blocked item accept the legacy receipt only when the hold's person hasn't changed since that receipt, or when the change brought its own recipient-bound notification? One test, extending the existing registry-outage fixture, would pin it: change blockedOn during the outage, post only A's receipt, and check that B's finding stays open.

Optional, your choice: the new check treats any transition note that starts with fallback-routed: as a reroute, so an ordinary note written that way would keep a finding open after a real delivery. The repository's two existing reroute checks use the same match, so keeping it is fine; if you'd like it stricter, fallbackLineStart already tells the real fallback writer apart by actor and provenance.

Approved at f28fc35. Stuck-sweep findings now close only on the source's own delivery, pickup or custody evidence, and an older human notice closes on its posted receipt only while its recipient is unchanged. Two independent source reviews (Claude and Codex) over three rounds; the last round's remaining case relies on the same reroute-note convention main already uses elsewhere and is left for a main-wide change. Required CI passes at this head.

Merged into main as 2fbe0dd, and it isn't in a release yet. Thanks, @Aschenbath, for three quick review rounds.

As its description says, an existing stuck-sweep finding now closes only on the source's own delivery, pickup or custody evidence, not just because it dropped out of a report. An older human notice closes on its posted receipt only while its recipient is unchanged.
