This release addresses three high rated vulnerabilities:

• Unauthenticated worker-to-daemon channel deserializes untrusted Java objects
• Deserialization of untrusted Java objects before authentication in the client - daemon communication
• Failure to disable repositories failing to establish an SSL connection can expose builds to malicious artifacts

The following issues were resolved:

Startup 4.0.3 updates the project's Gradle wrapper from 9.7.1 to 9.8.0, including the upstream wrapper JAR and Windows launcher updates from PR #9.

The Gradle daemon now uses any installed Java 21 distribution, fixing CI failures caused by stale JetBrains runtime download URLs. Wrapper line endings are normalized so fresh checkouts stay clean.

The public Kotlin and Swift APIs, initialization behavior, and consumer requirements are unchanged from 4.0.2. No application API migration is required.

4.0.2

Startup 4.0.2 fixes nested manifest installation, improves failure diagnostics, and avoids CPU spinning while Kotlin/Native threads wait for initialization. Public Kotlin and Swift APIs and platform requirements are unchanged.

Fixes

• An initializer can install another manifest from inside create without a false cycle error.
• A StartupException thrown by create without component information now identifies the failing initializer and retains the original exception as its cause.
• Kotlin/Native threads waiting for the startup lock now block on a recursive pthread mutex instead of spinning.
• The sample framework uses supported Gradle dependency notation, and wrapper line endings are pinned for each platform.

Upgrade note

Each non-Android install now starts the eager components in the supplied manifest and their dependencies, matching Android. Installing an unrelated manifest no longer retries eager components left uncreated by an earlier failed install. Retry by installing the original or corrected manifest, or by requesting the component explicitly.

• Off Android, Startup.install starts the eager components of the manifest it is given, with their dependencies, instead of every eager registration installed so far. This matches Android and the documented contract. A later install no longer retries an eager component that an earlier install failed to create; include it in the manifest you install to start it again.

Fixed

• Allow an initializer to call Startup.install from inside create, for example to install a feature's own manifest. Off Android this failed with Cycle detected: X -> X for a graph with no cycle.
• Name the component when its create throws a StartupException that names none, such as a CoroutineInitializer on JS or Wasm. The original exception is kept as the cause. Installs with a WaveRunner already reported these failures this way.
• Park Kotlin/Native threads that wait for the startup lock instead of spinning. A thread waiting for an install used most of a CPU core until the install finished; it now blocks on a recursive pthread mutex. The native artifacts add no dependency.
• Replace the sample framework's export(project(":startup")), a dependency notation Gradle 10 rejects, and add .gitattributes so gradlew and gradlew.bat keep their line endings.
