⚠️ Manual environments

ort replaced the manual Environment struct with ort::init all the way back in Nov 2023 with 2.0.0-alpha.1 (yes, before rc hell, we used to be in alpha hell). This was done because only one environment was allowed per process anyway. However, almost every other release since then, there has been some kind of issue stemming from the environment being stored as a global variable.

The trouble caused by this now far outweighs the inconvenience of lugging around another variable everywhere, so in rc.14, you must always first create an Environment to start building sessions:

// pre-rc.14
{
    // optional, even!
    ort::init().commit()?;
let mut model = Session::builder()?
    .with_optimization_level(GraphOptimizationLevel::Level3)?
    .with_intra_threads(4)?
    .commit_from_file("yolov8m.onnx")?;

}
// rc.14
{
let env = ort::init().build()?; // <-- must build an environment first
let mut model = Session::builder(&env)?
.with_optimization_level(GraphOptimizationLevel::Level3)?
.with_intra_threads(4)?
.commit_from_file("yolov8m.onnx")?;
}

Note that you don't need to hold onto env unless you intend to create more sessions. Please refrain from storing environments or sessions as global variables -- we can't fix the issues that causes within ONNX Runtime! And library authors, please remember to allow the user to pass their own Environment.

✨ Rust 1.100 compatibility

rc.14 adds support for the upcoming v2 build dir layout that will ship in Rust 1.100. If you intend to update to Rust 1.100, you should upgrade to rc.14 as soon as possible, since older ort versions will fail to build when copy-dylibs is enabled.

Note that, due to the new layout, tests will no longer be able to see dylibs copied by copy-dylibs; you can try to use ort::util::preload_dylib to manually set the path to provider dylibs instead.

📦 You get a binary! You get a binary! Everyone gets binaries!

🟩 rc.14's prebuilt CUDA binaries add support for RTX 50xx/Blackwell cards on x64. We now also ship aarch64 builds for Jetson Orin/Thor, Grace Hopper/Blackwell, & DGX Spark! Turing & Ampere GPUs remain fully supported.

Updates dirs from 6.0.0 to 7.0.0

Updates opener from 0.8.5 to 0.9.0

Changelog

Sourced from opener's changelog.

[0.9.0] - 2026-09-29

Changed

  • The minimum supported Rust version (MSRV) is now 1.77, and is declared in Cargo.toml.
  • On WSL, open() now uses the Windows shell via PowerShell instead of the discontinued wslview, and reports when Windows cannot open the target. xdg-open is used only if PowerShell is unavailable.
  • Updated the bundled xdg-open to xdg-utils 1.2.1, with a fix so that file URLs for other hosts aren't treated as local relative paths.
  • Clarified that open() and open_browser() do not wait for the opened application to exit, but may block while preparing or dispatching the launch.
  • Documented that a program installed with Flatpak, such as a browser, is given access only to the opened file, and how users can let it read the files that file refers to.
  • OpenError::Io now displays the underlying error's message instead of just "IO error". Its source() is now that error's own source, so error reports don't repeat the message.

Fixed

  • On Linux and other platforms that use xdg-open, open() now returns an error for a path that doesn't exist, instead of Ok(()). Other xdg-open failures are still not reported, since it may not exit until the opened application does.
  • On Windows and WSL, open_browser() now correctly handles percent-encoded file URLs and preserves queries and fragments when BROWSER is unset.
  • On Windows, open() now handles percent-encoded non-ASCII characters in file URLs.
  • On WSL, open_browser() no longer mangles URLs when BROWSER names a Windows executable.
  • open_browser() no longer closes the stderr pipe of the BROWSER program, which could kill it with SIGPIPE.
  • The bundled xdg-open script now handles paths that start with -.
  • On Linux and other Unix platforms, programs launched without waiting, such as xdg-open and the BROWSER program, no longer remain as zombie processes after they exit.

0.2.190

There is now a single config for enabling 64-bit time_t: libc_unstable_time64. This can be set unconditionally; it opts in to 64-bit time_t on the following platforms that use 32-bit by default:

  • 32-bit Linux-GNU
  • 32-bit Linux-uClibc
  • 32-bit Linux-musl. Note that setting this flag also enables some other changes that happend in musl v1.2.
  • 32-bit Windows-GNU
  • ESP-IDF (all targets with this environment are 32-bit)

Most other 32-bit platforms are either already using 64-bit time_t, or are considered legacy and will not be gaining support from their upstream maintainers.

You can enable this using RUSTFLAGS:

RUSTFLAGS='--cfg=libc_unstable_time64' cargo ...

Note that there may still be some changes to features gated by this config option, hence "unstable"

The engines support the standard and URL-safe alphabets.

  • JACK: Timestamps now include port latency.
  • Linux: Clarify that realtime alone is a no-op without realtime-dbus.
  • PipeWire: Devices with multiple ports now get distinct, localized, per-port names.
  • WASAPI: The windows and windows-core dependencies are now both pinned to 0.62.

Fixed

  • Timestamps now stay monotonic across device and graph changes.
  • ALSA: A nonzero but sub-millisecond stream timeout is no longer treated as a non-blocking poll.
  • ALSA: Fix compilation on FreeBSD, DragonFly, and NetBSD.
  • ASIO: Fix duplex streams silently dropping audio when built from separate Device handles.
  • AudioWorklet: Fix Stream operations to work when called from any thread.
  • AudioWorklet: Fix stale audio output when a data callback wrote a partial buffer.
  • CoreAudio: Default-output streams now report xrun status.
  • CoreAudio: Fix stale audio output when a data callback wrote a partial buffer.
  • iOS: Streams now resume automatically when an audio session interruption ends.
  • JACK: Streams with more channels than physical system ports no longer fail to build.
  • JACK: Channel enumeration is no longer capped at the physical system port count.
  • JACK: Device::id no longer embeds the process ID, so DeviceId is now stable across application restarts.
  • PipeWire: Fix streams starting audio before play() is called.
  • PipeWire: Fix rtkit burst limit errors from repeated real-time promotion on quantum jitter.
  • PipeWire: Fix real-time promotion blocking the audio callback thread on Linux.
  • PipeWire: Fix 24-bit sample format mapping.
  • PipeWire: Nodes with an /Internal media class are now enumerated as devices.
  • PipeWire: Streams for a specific device no longer auto-reroute if it disappears.
  • PipeWire: Build on 32-bit targets without native 64-bit atomics.
  • PulseAudio: NoData errors are no longer misreported as buffer xruns.
  • PulseAudio: Build on 32-bit targets without native 64-bit atomics.
  • visionOS: The CoreAudio backend now builds.
  • WASAPI: Default device changes no longer report DeviceChanged, which wrongly implied the stream had rerouted automatically.
  • WASAPI: Reported buffer sizes are no longer off by one frame.
  • WASAPI: Stream::drop, play, and pause no longer panic when the device is lost.
  • WASAPI: Capture streams no longer report a spurious xrun on the first buffer after starting.
  • WASAPI: Output streams no longer reject formats that the built-in resampler can convert.
  • WASAPI: Fix 24-bit samples not being packed into the upper bits of their sample container.
  • WebAudio: Fix stale audio output when a data callback wrote a partial buffer.
