Australians developing open-source large language models for Australia.
JoeyLLM is an open language model project developed through the broader Southern Cross AI community.
The goal is to build useful, inspectable, and locally relevant AI capability in the open. JoeyLLM focuses on regional language models, public datasets, evaluation, and practical deployment pathways.
A public JoeyLLM chat interface is coming soon.
Our flagship open language model project. JoeyLLM is being developed as a practical model pathway that people can inspect, test, improve, and build around.
We have built public datasets totalling 1.3 trillion tokens across Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Classifiers for regional language and country context are also in development.
JoeyLLM is part of a hands-on community of developers, researchers, students, and sponsors. Meetups are returning, and active contributors may be able to access GPU and compute resources for project work.
The main place for project-wide coordination is GitHub Discussions:
👉 Join the JoeyLLM GitHub Discussions
Use Discussions for:
- questions and introductions
- project ideas
- model training and evaluation topics
- dataset conversations
- roadmap suggestions
- community coordination
Discord is available for live sessions and informal chat, but important project discussions should move to GitHub so they remain searchable and visible.
Sponsorship helps support practical project costs, including GPU time, hosting, storage, datasets, public releases, and community infrastructure.
