Cross-check against CryptoCrime.db: 10 incidents there missing here, 8 here missing there

Hi — I research coercion-resistant custody (author of BIP-450/Formosa). For a paper's empirical section I code this registry with a small reproducible script, and I cross-checked it against the CryptoCrime.db dashboard (@AllyPry's, built on this repo) — 348 rows there vs 346 here today.

Result: 338 match. 10 incidents in the dashboard are absent upstream (table below — including 2026 incidents in Cambodia, France ×3, UK, Indonesia, US, and 2025 Trinidad & Tobago and Nigeria). 8 upstream rows I couldn't find in the dashboard (second table — a couple may just be phrasing/date differences).

@AllyPry — the 10 are your finds, so I'll leave PRing them upstream to you for credit; happy to help or to PR them with attribution if you prefer. One nice independent check: your typed Murder count (18) exactly matches my keyword coding's killed/murdered floor (18 of ~346, ≈5%).

CryptoCrime.db ↔ jlopp/physical-bitcoin-attacks — dataset cross-check (2026-08-06)

Method. The dashboard's embedded dataset (348 rows, current through 2026-08-03) was extracted
from its app bundle and matched against today's upstream registry README (346 rows) by
date+country, then ±3-day and month/year-tolerant tiers, then description-token overlap.
Matching is heuristic: rows listed below are candidates pending eyeball confirmation —
date or country disagreements between the sources surface here too.

Result: 338 matched · 10 dashboard-only · 8 upstream-only.
Paper snapshot context: our coding used the 2026-07-19 upstream (342 rows); upstream has
since added 4 rows (1 dated after the snapshot). Type cross-validation: the dashboard's
typed Murder = 18 independently agrees with our keyword coding's 18 killed/murdered
(both ≈5%).

Thank you so much for this thorough cross-check, really appreciate the effort. Glad to hear the Murder-count cross-validation lined up independently, that's a nice sanity check.

Feel free to PR the 10 incidents if you'd like, I'm happy either way and don't need the attribution.

One thing worth flagging: my methodology on CryptoCrime.db isn't 100% aligned with Jameson's here. Notably, here on this repo, we don't count incidents where a crypto ransom is demanded but the underlying incident itself isn't crypto-related. That's the case for a few in your table A (Cambodia, Igor Komarov, Nancy Guthrie). I chose to count it on the CryptoCrime.db dashboard.

I'll do another pass on CryptoCrime.db soon. It's possible I've missed a few genuine ones from your table B, so thanks for surfacing those. That said, some entries need a closer look before merging: e.g. the Sillytuna incident is listed as UK on the CryptoCrime.db dashboard and HK on the repo.

Thanks @AllyPry — the holder-victim inclusion criterion is exactly the kind of thing only a maintainer knows, and it's directly useful: it means this corpus matches my paper's victim model more tightly than I'd assumed, and I'll note it in the empirical caveats.

Triaged accordingly: Cambodia / Komarov / Guthrie are out per the criterion, and I'd put the Nigeria case (8-year-old, $2k ransom paid in crypto) in the same class. Sillytuna turns out to be in both datasets — my matcher missed the pair precisely because of the date and country disagreement you flagged, so that one's yours to reconcile. That leaves 5 upstream-eligible incidents; I'll archive the sources and open a PR shortly. (The Revelles home invasion had no source attached in your dataset — France Bleu covered it, and there's a sentencing follow-up from the Amiens court in Feb 2026 if you want the outcome field.)

Will share the paper when it's public — and likewise, if the dashboard ever needs a hand, happy to return the favor.
