LMC 6650An interactive installation that makes the invisible visible: exploring the density, persistence, and biological specificity of the air we breathe during allergy seasons.
Project Overview: "How can pollen affect your life?" Active Filtration is an experiential data visualization that reacts dynamically to real-time environment data and user presence.
The display is divided into three vertical panels representing the core allergy seasons: Spring (left), Summer (center), and Fall (right). As users approach the installation, face-tracking technology attaches season-specific pollen particles to their faces. The density of these particles isn't arbitrary—it is driven by live, daily pollen count data for Atlanta, GA.
Key Features
- Dynamic Particle Simulation: Pollen grains drift based on real botanical characteristics (weight, size, and shape derived from documented botanical data).
- Real-time Data Integration: Particle density fluctuates daily based on live Atlanta pollen counts.
- Interactive Face-Tracking: Pollen accumulates on the user's face the longer they stand in front of the screen.
- Gesture Control: Users can swipe their hands to temporarily disperse the pollen cloud, mimicking the temporary and partial nature of real-world allergy avoidance.
- Symptom Visualization: When accumulation thresholds are crossed, the screen dynamically displays allergen-specific symptoms and severity.
