feat(builtins): add tofu_docs and tofu_validate - #1710
illesnagy1 wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
Add OpenTofu counterparts of terraform_docs and terraform_validate. `tofu_docs` generates module READMEs with terraform-docs, and `tofu_validate` runs `tofu validate` in each changed module directory, running `tofu init -backend=false` first when needed. `tofu_validate` also matches `*.tofu.json` files. Both are POSIX shell scripts, so on Windows they need a POSIX shell, like their Terraform counterparts. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

| On Windows, a string command runs through `cmd.exe` unless the step sets `shell`. A command that is a plain program with arguments behaves the same there, but POSIX shell syntax such as `$(...)`, `for` loops, `[ ... ]`, `trap`, or `/dev/null` does not. A few builtins are written as POSIX scripts and need a POSIX shell on Windows: `go_fmt`, `go_imports`, `jq`, `pkl`, `terraform_docs`, `terraform_validate`, `terragrunt_hcl_fmt`, `terragrunt_hcl_validate`, `tf_lint`, `typos`, and `yq`. `just_format` also needs a POSIX shell, with `xargs`, and `nix_fmt` has no Windows commands. Other builtins run as they are. | ||

Update the pirate variant stamp.
tofu_validate is already present in docs/pirate/configuration.md. The variant's sourceHash is unchanged, so stamp it against the updated English page:
cd docs && node .vitepress/pirate-pages.mjs stamp configuration.md

JSON changes skip documentation
tofu_docs never runs when only *.tf.json or *.tofu.json files change because neither matches this glob. Both are configuration files recognized by the new tofu_validate builtin. Add these patterns so JSON-only changes also trigger README checks and updates.

Native files lack test coverage
Every tofu_docs test writes main.tf, so none checks whether terraform-docs reads the newly matched *.tofu files. Add a test using main.tofu and assert that its variable appears in the generated README. Checking only the exit code or checking the README with the same command would miss silently omitted variables.
