Getting Started

Philosophy

Bedrock is built on three core pillars:

  • Distraction-Free: A pure monochrome aesthetic ensures your focus remains entirely on your content.
  • Privacy-First: Your notes, profile data, and backups never leave your device unless you manually export them.
  • Versatility: A single app that scales from a simple note-taker on a phone to a multi-window workspace on a tablet or desktop.

Installation

  • Minimum Requirements: Android 7.0 (API 24) or higher.
  • Recommended: Android 12+ for full Material 3 Expressive support and Scoped Storage features.

Adaptive Workspace

Bedrock intelligently adapts its interface to match your device's screen size and orientation.

Layout Modes

  • Compact (Mobile): A clean, single-pane view focused on one note at a time. Navigation is handled via the bottom pill-bar and shared-element transitions.
  • Expanded (Tablet/Desktop): Automatically switches to a Two-pane Layout.
    • Left Sidebar: Persistent access to your note list, filters (Pinned, Trash), and settings.
    • Active Pane: The right side hosts your active note viewer or editor.

Multi-Note Tabs

You can open multiple notes simultaneously!

  • On Desktop: Managed via a horizontal scrollable tab bar at the top.
  • On Mobile: Tapping the "Tab Count" indicator in the bottom bar opens the Tab Switcher bottom sheet to jump between active sessions.
  • Persistence: Bedrock remembers whether each tab was in View or Edit mode, ensuring you return exactly where you left off.

The Advanced Editors

Bedrock offers three specialized environments for your data.

Markdown Editor

A professional-grade Markdown environment featuring:

  • Live Preview: Toggle between raw syntax and rendered content.
  • Split Screen: View syntax and preview side-by-side on large screens.
  • Swipeable Toolbar: Horizontal access to formatting tools (H1, H2, Bold, Lists, etc.).
  • In-Note Search: Real-time visual highlighting of search terms across the entire note.

Structured To-do Lists

A dedicated checklist mode that prioritizes speed:

  • Auto-New Item: Pressing Enter/Done on your keyboard instantly creates a new task row.
  • Move Controls: Reorder tasks without editing text.
  • Visual Completion: High-contrast checkboxes and strikethrough styling for completed tasks.

Rich Image Support

Insert gallery images directly into your text:

  • Resizable: Drag the corner handle to adjust width in real-time.
  • Draggable: Use "Move Up/Down" buttons to shift images between paragraphs.
  • Markdown Extension: Sizes are persisted using ![alt](uri){w=300} syntax.

Security & Master Password

Bedrock uses a localized, high-security model to protect your data.

Master Password

The Master Password is the primary key for the entire app. It is used to:

  • Lock Notes: Encrypt individual notes behind a password prompt.
  • Secure Backups: Every exported backup is encrypted using a SHA-256 derived key from your password.
  • Persistence: The password is saved securely in the device's local DataStore.

Technical Implementation

  • Hashing: Passwords are never stored in plain text. We use SHA-256 for one-way derivation.
  • Obfuscation: Content is obscured using XOR-based encryption with a key derived from your Master Password.

Backup & Synchronization

Local Backups

  • Export: Generates a secure, Base64-encoded JSON copy of your notes.
  • Location: Backups are saved to your public Download/Bedrock folder for easy external storage.
  • Restore: Import your notes by providing the encrypted string and the original password.

Synchronization

  • Local Sync Status: Tracks changes made on the device.
  • Cloud Sync (WIP): A placeholder engine manages replica checksums to ensure future multi-device consistency.

Trash Bin & Maintenance

Bedrock includes a robust Trash system to prevent accidental data loss.

30-Day Policy

  • Automatic Deletion: Any note moved to the Trash will be kept for 30 days.
  • Housekeeping: The app performs a quiet maintenance check on every startup to permanently remove expired notes.
  • Restoration: Tap the Restore icon in the Trash Hub to move a note back to your active workspace instantly.

System Reliability

To ensure your Scheduled Reminders fire exactly on time, Bedrock requires specific system configurations.

Reliability Hub

Located in Settings > Reminders & Reliability, this center helps you:

  • Bypass Battery Restrictions: Guide to excluding Bedrock from Android's "Doze" mode optimization.
  • Exact Alarms: Manage the permission required for high-precision notification delivery.
  • Channel Controls: Quick access to Android's system notification settings for the app.

Developer Options

Hidden tools for advanced users and troubleshooting.

Secret Activation

Tap the "Bedrock" app name in the Settings footer 7 times to unlock Developer Mode.

Debugging Tools

  • Generate logs.txt: Gathers device info, OS version, and recent sync/crash history into a public file in Download/Bedrock.
  • Custom Crash Catcher: Bedrock includes a "Black Box" that captures unhandled exceptions. Reports are recovered on app startup and added to your debug logs.
  • Simulate Crash: A testing utility to verify that the crash recovery system is functioning correctly.

Tip

Use Ctrl + P on a physical keyboard to instantly toggle the Command Palette from anywhere in the app!
