Description

Adds Essentials Island support so the host can display current budget information.

Issue Linked (if any)

No linked issue was provided.

Implemented

  • Adds the vendored island-sdk module, including provider interfaces, payload models, host authorization, and Compose surface helpers.
  • Adds MinusIslandService to publish brief budget cards and expanded budget content to the Essentials Island host.
  • Adds IslandBudgetSnapshot and IslandBudgetStore to store budget data. BudgetWidgetUpdater syncs budget state to the store.
  • Adds island-specific string resources and makes budget period label helpers internal for reuse.
  • Adds WidgetBackgroundTest for launcher background and system widget radius modifiers.

Working demo

No demo evidence was provided.

Testing

  • Ran :app:connectedFossDebugAndroidTest :app:verifyPaparazziFossDebug --continue for E2E test on a device and verify screenshots. Test results were not provided.
  • Added/updated tests when applicable: added WidgetBackgroundTest.
  • Added screenshots or screen recordings for UI changes. None were provided.

Notes

The SDK pins the trusted Essentials host package signing certificate fingerprint in IslandSchema.TRUSTED_HOST_FINGERPRINTS.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds an Android Island SDK and registers an app provider. The app persists budget snapshots, publishes budget Brief cards, and renders expanded budget content. The SDK defines host authorization, payload transport, and Compose surface handling.

Changes: Island budget provider

Layer / File(s) Summary
SDK module and payload contracts
island-sdk/*, build.gradle.kts, gradle/libs.versions.toml, settings.gradle.kts, .gitignore
Adds the Android library module and its Island schema, payload models, bundle conversions, AIDL host interfaces, codec, and host request API.

99-105: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Cache the authorization result instead of checking it on every touch event.

Every Binder call runs isCallerAllowed(), and that includes each onSurfaceTouch MotionEvent. Each check calls getPackagesForUid and creates a new HostGrantStore. It also calls getPackageInfo(GET_SIGNING_CERTIFICATES), which is a PackageManager IPC, and hashes the certificates with SHA-256. During a drag, this work runs at the touch sampling rate, often 60–120 events per second, on Binder threads. Cache the result per calling UID. Clear the cache on grantHost, revokeHost, and onUnbind. Also clear it when the host package changes, which you can detect with PACKAGE_REPLACED.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Signature pinning trusts the first signer it sees, so the host check does not verify the host.

onHostGrantRequested returns true by default. grantHost() then saves the signing fingerprint of whatever app currently owns com.sameerasw.essentials. The only check before that is the package name. On a device, a sideloaded app that uses this package name with a different signing key can call grantHost() and then attach(). After that, it receives the user's budget data, because MinusIslandService publishes the split remaining, the period left, and the date range. The fingerprint check in isAuthorized only notices a signer change after the first grant. It cannot reject a host that was malicious from the first call.

Compare the fingerprint against a known Essentials release signing fingerprint before you save it. You can also make onHostGrantRequested default to false and require providers to show a user confirmation.

🔒️ Proposed fix
         override fun grantHost(): Boolean {
             val hostPackage = callerHost() ?: return false
             if (!onHostGrantRequested(hostPackage)) return false
             val fingerprint = IslandIdentity.fingerprint(this@IslandProviderService, hostPackage) ?: return false
+            val expected = IslandSchema.TRUSTED_HOST_FINGERPRINTS[hostPackage] ?: return false
+ if (fingerprint != expected) return false
             HostGrantStore(this@IslandProviderService).grant(hostPackage, fingerprint)
             return true
         }

Add TRUSTED_HOST_FINGERPRINTS to IslandSchema. Use the published Essentials signing SHA-256 as the value.
