Hi everyone,
While reviewing the eopkg codebase in depth, I found several areas related to exception handling, reliability, and maintainability that may benefit from cleanup and hardening.
The issues I identified include:
- Missing return values and incomplete retry handling in
fetcher.py
- Exception swallowing and missing context managers in repository/database modules
- Multiple file read operations without proper error handling
- Broad exception catches (
except:) that may unintentionally catch KeyboardInterrupt
- Legacy Python 2 style exception handling remnants
- Commented-out error handling in indexing operations
raise e patterns that lose original traceback context
- Some unreachable/dead code paths
None of these are catastrophic individually, but together they may affect debugging quality, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
I’ve already mapped the affected files and I’m interested in helping improve and maintain these parts of the project. My background is mainly in Python development, especially debugging, automation, and reliability improvements.
I’d be happy to:
- prepare clean patches/PRs,
- improve exception handling consistency,
- add safer file/database handling,
- reduce silent failures,
- and help modernize some legacy patterns.
I’m posting this first for discussion and feedback before opening larger changes, since I want to make sure any fixes align with the project’s preferred direction and coding standards.
Thanks for maintaining eopkg and keeping the project alive.
