fix(GenesisKit, GenesisHub, widgets): widget follow-ups: the alert tile and its options, a Panel background setting, no fold under a reader, no hang on a session's Decisions - #582
Stacked on #563: it edits the widget code #563 rewrites (LiveWidgetView.swift, WidgetModel.swift, WidgetModel+Staging.swift, WidgetStagedViews.swift, EdgePanelController.swift, src/hub/lib/widget/staged.ts); none of its five commits applies on master.
What
Widget follow-ups after the UX fixes: the alert popup is one tile that fills its pane, the alert card lists the decision's options with the recommended one marked, a Panel background setting (Dark by default, Glass, Same as the app), the widget no longer folds under a reader, and a session's inbox lays out its cards eagerly (the Decisions filter wedged the widget at 99% CPU in a lazy-stack loop).
Commits
dda8194 fix(GenesisKit, GenesisHub, widgets): the alert popup beside the rail is one tile that fills its pane: the same 8 pt inset on every side, a corner parallel to the panel's, the alert flash on the tile's edge and Click to answer at its foot, measured by its content so the pane cannot chase its own height (unified 0c28e30)
8cc7949 feat(GenesisKit, GenesisHub, widgets): a Panel background setting (Dark by default, Glass, Same as the app) so the hub's theme no longer turns the widget grey, and the inbox sort button names its order (unified f0ae687)
b6b22bb fix(GenesisKit, GenesisHub, widgets): the alert card lists the decision's options with the recommended one marked instead of an empty card, and each hover-list row shows its waiting decision, so an alert that folded can be found again (unified 33430fc)
da324ed fix(GenesisKit, GenesisHub, widgets): a session's inbox lays out its cards eagerly, so the Decisions filter no longer wedges the widget in a lazy-stack height and scroll-offset loop at full CPU (unified 574fc16)
ec27a91 fix(GenesisKit, GenesisHub, widgets): the widget no longer folds under a reader: a reshape exit with the pointer still inside is ignored, the quiet timer skips a panel under the pointer or with a waiting decision, Send keeps the pane height and the delivered note readable, and every fold, quiet skip and staged send is logged (unified 780532c)
Checks
GenesisKit swift test --filter 'Widget|EdgePanel': 17 tests, 0 failures. tsgo; src/hub/lib/composer/outbox.test.ts and src/question/lib/decisions/store.test.ts (231 pass); check-tool-commands, lint-rules, placeholder-check, check-commits: all pass.
Cut from the unified branch by gt-native-ux (split agreed with gt-native-fixes and approved by Martin, 2026-10-25).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Choose a Dark, Glass, or app-matched panel background.
Show waiting questions in the session hover list, with an option to turn previews off.
Sort controls display the selected order, and decision cards highlight recommended options.
Answers read from chat are labeled accordingly.
Set how long the panel stays open after a staged answer is delivered, or choose to keep it open.
Improvements
Panels avoid collapsing while the pointer is over them or an answer is needed.
Improved inbox scrolling and panel interactions.
Bug Fixes
Sending staged answers no longer closes the panel when no selected items can be sent.
The widget adds panel background, question-preview, and send-close preferences. It updates session and decision previews, composer bindings, staged-send feedback, delayed collapse, quiet-collapse checks, and pointer-exit tracking. Tests cover the updated behavior and rendering.
Preferences now include panelBackground, previewQuestion, and sendCloseSeconds. The appearance settings and theme selection use the panel background setting. Session rows can show pending questions, and the sort control displays compact labels. Automatic heuristic answers have a distinct label.
Decision card layout and options src/macos/GenesisKit/Sources/GenesisKit/Widgets/WidgetHostView.swift, src/macos/GenesisKit/Tests/GenesisKitTests/EdgePanelGeometryTests.swift, src/macos/GenesisKit/Tests/GenesisKitTests/WidgetPolishShotsTests.swift
The decision preview measures its header and footer and displays up to four options, with a recommendation marker and a count of additional options. Accessibility values describe the displayed options. Tests cover card geometry, recommendation matching, and screenshot rendering.
Composer bindings reject writes from an outdated selection or composer. Staged sends log skipped decisions and outcomes, show feedback when no decisions are sent, and schedule collapse after successful delivery when the configured delay and state checks allow it. Quiet-collapse and Inbox section behavior are also updated. Tests cover draft handling, delayed collapse, preference validation, and inbox replay filtering.
The edge panel tracks pointer movement when an exit event occurs while the pointer remains inside the window. It reports departure when the pointer later moves outside. Tests cover departure reporting and monitor cleanup.

The verification model for UI changes is Playwright before/after sweep screenshots and canary runs, with evidence stored under .claude/docs/assets/ (e.g., ui-drift-2026-05-18/ contains canary, sweep, and -after PNGs). Do not suggest adding snapshot tests, story tests, or any UI test framework for this repo. Review fixes 2026-10-26 03:12 from GPT-6.1 Sol judged by Claude Opus 5.5 (fable-judge)
Round 1. 2 open threads (eve 2, CodeRabbit 0). Both fixed, plus 1 self-review finding fixed. Fixed in b6fb43f; the lead ran the tests and committed.
Match letter recommendations against the option index (eve-bot-lovinka)
Context: The alert receives unprefixed option text, while the recommended value is an option letter. Matching only against the option's text leaves normal options such as Keep and Drop without their recommendation mark.
ForEach(Array(options.prefix(4).enumerated()), id: \.offset){ _, option in
letpicked=Self.isRecommended(option, recommended)
Code after:
ForEach(Array(options.prefix(4).enumerated()), id: \.offset){ index, option in
letpicked=Self.isRecommended(option, at: index, recommended)
How was this fixed: Pass the enumerated option index to isRecommended and compare its letter with the normalized recommendation, retaining whole-text and prefixed-text matching. Extend WidgetPolishShotsTests.testTheRecommendedOptionIsFoundByLetterOrText with unprefixed Keep/Drop options, whitespace and uppercase recommendation normalization, nil and empty values, and the existing text cases. Verification:.
Confidence: 95%
Invalidate a delayed send close when new work begins (eve-bot-lovinka)
Context: The delay after delivery only checked openedAt, which remains unchanged when the user types, stages a new answer or changes the selected session. The old task could therefore hide new work and bypass its leave confirmation.
How was this fixed: Capture an interaction revision when sending begins. Typing, selecting a session, staging or discarding a decision, and stopping the model invalidate that revision. Check it before scheduling and after sleeping; also compare the draft to protect later attachment changes. WidgetStagingTests.testNewInteractionCancelsTheDeliveredSendClose covers typing, a different newly staged decision with leave confirmation, switching away and back, and discarding. The existing testAPickStagesAndClosingAsksThenSendsOneBatch retains the no-interaction close case. WidgetModel.swift changes are necessary because setText, select and stop own those interactions. Verification:.
Confidence: 94%
Expose the new automatic-close timing as a widget setting (self-review, no thread)
Context: The PR introduced a fixed 2.5-second automatic close after successful delivery. The opinionated-settings area rule requires UI timings to ship with a setting, including an alternative for readers who want the panel kept open.
letcloseSeconds= snapshot?.state.preferences.sendCloseSeconds ??2.5
if thenClose, expanded !=nil, openedAt == opened, sendCloseRevision == closeRevision,
closeSeconds >0{Task{[weak self] in
do{tryawaitTask.sleep(for:.seconds(closeSeconds))}catch{return}
How was this fixed: Add sendCloseSeconds to the TypeScript preference schema and Swift wire preferences, defaulting to 2.5 seconds with 0 meaning Keep open. Add the Close after send picker beside staged-decision closing behavior. Extend the existing outbox.test.ts preference suite with default, zero, custom value and invalid-boundary cases; this is the one changed file outside the original PR diff because it already tests the widget schema. Add WidgetStagingTests.testSendCloseCanKeepThePanelOpenOrUseTheConfiguredDelay to exercise both Keep open and a short configured delay. No new tracked files or dependencies are needed. Verification:.
Review fixes 2026-10-26 03:33 from GPT-6.1 Sol judged by Claude Opus 5.5 (fable-judge)
Round 2. 6 unresolved threads (eve 2, CodeRabbit 4). 5 fixed and 1 already done in b6fb43f. Fixed in cb4a002; the lead ran the tests and committed.
Reject disposed composer writes without dropping legitimate repeated input (eve-bot-lovinka)
Context: The two-second text-equality heuristic treated intentional repeated input as a stale field write after every submission, so a pasted repeat or a short repeated reply was silently lost.
How was this fixed: Remove lastSent and its time/text heuristic. Give composer bindings a captured generation and session key, plus the originating decision ID for own-answer fields. Sending and session switching invalidate disposed bindings; active bindings and programmatic setText accept repeated text immediately. Update both the regular and legacy bindings in LiveWidgetView.swift, which owns the originating fields. Extend testASentOwnAnswerDoesNotComeBackInTheReplyField and add testRegularComposerAcceptsAnImmediateRepeatAfterSend in the existing WidgetPolishShotsTests.swift. Verification:.
Confidence: 94%
Exercise the draft-save revision fence through the asynchronous mutation queue (eve-bot-lovinka)
Context: The old test only inspected synchronous draft state and submitted before a debounced save entered the queue, so removing the submit-time draft revision increment would not fail it.
How was this fixed: Add testQueuedDraftSaveIsFencedBySendAndLaterSavesStillRun to the existing Swift test file. A controllable continuation blocks the mutation queue while the old draft's 350 ms debounce enqueues its save. Submit, release the barrier and inspect draft-text calls through actionRunner: only the clear may execute. Then type a legitimate new draft and assert it reaches the backend. The later edit occurs only after the first queue drain, so it cannot mask a missing submit-time revision increment. Verification:.
Confidence: 93%
Announce the visible waiting question in the preview row (CR)
Context: The explicit button label replaced its children's accessible text but named only the session and status, omitting the waiting question shown visually.
How was this fixed: Derive the displayed question once and reuse it in the row's text and explicit accessibility label. Keep the existing session/status label when previews are disabled, the item is missing or its title is empty. Add testWaitingQuestionIsIncludedInThePreviewAccessibilityLabel to the existing WidgetPolishShotsTests.swift for enabled, disabled, missing and untitled cases. Verification:.
Reply (thread resolved, no thread reply): Fixed in the The row's visible question and VoiceOver label now share the same kicker/title text. When the question is disabled or absent, the original session and status label is preserved. Added coverage for enabled, disabled, missing and empty-title cases. Verification:.
Confidence: 95%
Restart quiet reduction after the pointer leaves (CR)
Context: A quiet timeout skipped under the pointer cleared its signature and ended. Pointer exit never scheduled quiet reduction again, so no further snapshot meant the panel could remain open indefinitely.
How was this fixed: Call scheduleQuietReduction on pointer exit immediately after updating pointerInside, before the hover handler's early returns. The cleared timeout signature rearms the timer; existing eligibility guards still protect drafts, activity and dialogs. Add testQuietCollapseRestartsWhenThePointerLeavesWithoutAnotherSnapshot to the existing WidgetPolishShotsTests.swift: let the first timeout skip under the pointer, leave, provide no new snapshot and expect the next timeout to close. Verification:.
Reply (thread resolved, no thread reply): Fixed in the Pointer exit now schedules quiet reduction before the hover handler can return early. A timeout previously skipped under the pointer therefore rearms even if no snapshot arrives. Added a regression that waits through the skipped timeout, moves the pointer out and expects quiet collapse without another snapshot. Verification:.
Confidence: 94%
Make the delivered-send close delay a preference (CR)
Context: The review requests a configurable delivered-note delay with a 2.5-second default and a settings control.
How was this fixed: Already implemented in b6fb43f. Current WidgetModel+Staging.swift:182-187 reads sendCloseSeconds with a 2.5-second fallback and sleeps for that duration, skipping the close at zero. WidgetFeatureSettings.swift:275-283 exposes Close after send with Keep open and duration choices. src/hub/lib/widget/types.ts:93 defaults the preference to 2.5 and bounds it to 0-60; WidgetWireModels.swift:316-317 carries the Swift preference. Verification:.
Confidence: 99%
Keep observing pointer departure after an ignored reshape exit (CR)
Context: The old geometry check ran once after 250 ms. If the pointer was still inside, later departure could be missed because AppKit had already consumed the tracking area's exit transition.
How was this fixed: Keep the initial delayed geometry check and install local/global movement monitors while an ignored exit is pending. Later movement invokes the same geometry handler until the pointer leaves; report false once and remove the monitors. Re-entry, view detachment and deinitialization also remove monitors. This avoids an idle polling loop. Make EdgePanelRootView internal for the existing test target and add testAnIgnoredExitKeepsWatchingUntilPointerMovementLeavesTheWindow to EdgePanelGeometryTests.swift, using injected pointer coordinates without moving the user's pointer or showing a window. Verification:.
Reply (thread resolved, no thread reply): Fixed in the An ignored exit now keeps local and global pointer-movement monitors until geometry confirms departure, rather than relying on another mouseExited. Departure reports false once and removes the monitors; re-entry and view teardown clean them up too. Added a regression for a pointer still inside after the first recheck and leaving later without another exit event. Verification:.

Review fixes 2026-10-26 03:56 from GPT-6.1 Sol judged by Claude Opus 5.5 (fable-judge)
Round 3. 3 unresolved threads (eve 3, CodeRabbit 0). All 3 fixed under the round policy: two extend earlier quiet-collapse/accessibility fixes, and the legacy theme override is a small fix. Fixed in 7d6c1da; the lead ran the tests and committed.
Protect waiting decisions from other sessions while reading the overview (eve-bot-lovinka)
Context: The quiet-fold guard checked selected-session cards only. In the overview, another session's waiting decision could remain visible while the selected quiet session had no waiting card, allowing the panel to close under a keyboard reader.
How was this fixed: When inboxOverview is active, use the aggregate inbox needsAnswer count for the quiet-fold guard; retain the selected-session cards check for a session inbox. This is the same quiet-collapse class fixed in round 2 and is selected by the round-3 policy. Add testQuietCollapseKeepsOverviewDecisionsFromOtherSessionsVisible to the existing WidgetPolishShotsTests.swift, with all sessions idle, no selected-session card, a waiting decision in another session and the pointer elsewhere. The existing pointer-exit regression retains normal quiet-collapse coverage. Verification:.
Confidence: 95%
Follow the app theme without the removed glass toggle's hidden override (eve-bot-lovinka)
Context: Same as the app still honored a persisted glassEffect=false even though the widget no longer exposed that control, leaving an opaque override the user could not clear in the current settings.
How was this fixed: Return appearance.theme directly in the theme branch of panelTheme, removing the legacy glassEffect override. This is a small production change plus eight lines extending the existing theme test, so it qualifies as a cheap round-3 fix. Extend testThePanelIsDarkUnlessGlassOrTheAppThemeIsPicked with panelBackground=theme, legacy glassEffect=false and an app glass theme, then change the app theme to midnight and assert the widget follows both. Verification:.
Confidence: 96%
Expose the alert's options and recommendation in its accessible value (eve-bot-lovinka)
Context: The alert's explicit button label named only its kicker and title, so the option labels inside the button did not expose the added choices and recommendation to VoiceOver.
How was this fixed: Add an accessibilityValue to the alert button containing the same first four options shown visually, their recommendation marker and any more-options count. Reuse the index/text recommendation matcher and omit values for items that do not display options. Add testTheAlertAccessibilityValueIncludesDisplayedOptionsAndRecommendation to the existing WidgetPolishShotsTests.swift for letter/text recommendations, more-options counts, absent recommendations, messages and missing/empty options. This is the same explicit-button accessibility class fixed in round 2. The hover-row portion of the comment is already addressed by cb4a002 in WidgetAgentPreview.swift:203-207 and its row label call. Verification:.

📋 Spec drift
Derive the alert corner from the actual preview panel shape
Claim [c1] calls for the alert tile's corner to run parallel to the panel's. This constant subtracts the inset from 18, but the production host's WidgetHostView.panelShape uses corner 22 for every non-compact presentation, including the alert preview. Consequently the tile uses radius 10 where the stated inset construction would require 14. The added geometry assertion and screenshot fixture both use a synthetic 18-point panel, so they cannot detect this mismatch. Share the production panel corner with the tile (or pass it in) and test against panelShape rather than the default EdgePanelShape radius.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Accepted. The follow-up will derive the alert corner from the actual preview panel shape. The pull request was merged after its fix rounds, so this finding waits for a follow-up, and this thread stays open until then.
⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Use a short close delay in the interaction test.
This test waits 2.6 seconds to check whether new work prevents collapse. Set a short sendCloseSeconds value in its fixtures and wait just beyond that value. Keep the separate default-delay test for the 2.5-second behavior.

Re-render the widget panel when the app theme changes.
WidgetHostView reads model.panelTheme in its body, but a theme change does not invalidate WidgetModel. The panel can keep the old theme until another model change re-runs WidgetHostView.body. Publishing a change from the appearance sink fixes this.
The appearance sink calls presentationChanged?() after its two if blocks, so it runs on every appearance change, not only when reduce-motion or reduce-transparency changes. That call reaches WidgetCoordinator.sync(). The inspected evidence does not show sync() replacing the host's root view, so the stale value persists.
🐛 Suggested fix
if self.reduceTransparency != self.appearance.reduceTransparency {
self.reduceTransparency = self.appearance.reduceTransparency
}
+ self.objectWillChange.send() // re-runs views that read `panelTheme`
self.presentationChanged?()

Accepted. The panel should redraw when the app theme changes. The pull request was merged after its fix rounds, so this finding waits for a follow-up, and this thread stays open until then.

Make same-app pointer movement observable.
If the pointer moves from the edge panel to a same-app window that does not accept mouse-moved events, the local monitor receives no movement and the global monitor does not observe same-app events. After the delayed check sees the pointer inside, ignoredExitPending can therefore remain set and the panel can retain its inside state. Ensure the relevant windows set acceptsMouseMovedEvents, or use a departure check that does not depend on movement-event delivery.
