feat(display): colors are the only user-facing clone names across menus and scripts - #22
Shortcut files have been color-named since 2026-11-01 (ZCode Blue.lnk), but GHOST.bat rows and the suite scripts still spoke the frozen keys — Second/Fifth for ZCode, c1/c2 for AutoClaw2/Cline/OpenCode. Two vocabularies for one clone; users (and this repo's own developer) couldn't map menu rows to desktop icons.
tests/repo-integrity.Tests.ps1 11/11 (no label-text assertions existed — rename-safe by design).
GH_SEQ chained smoke of all four submenus (stubbed start/pause/timeout, pure CRLF): ZCode rows [1]-[6] → 5 :Detached + 5 :StartClone with color titles and frozen-key args; AutoClaw2/Cline/OpenCode [1]-[6] → 6 each; zero CMD errors, exit 0.
Live: launch_zcode_second_instance.ps1 -Instance Sixth (Orange running) → [ram-guard] Orange is already running..., [seed] Orange profile already exists..., exit 0, no worktree-sourced watcher (mutex held by the main-repo copy).
…us and scripts
The shortcut files have been color-named since 2026-11-01 (ZCode Blue.lnk
etc.) but GHOST.bat rows and the suite scripts' console output still spoke
the frozen keys - Second/Fifth for ZCode, c1/c2 for the newer suites. Two
vocabularies for one clone confused users.
Menus: all 31 :Opt rows across the four clone submenus now read 'Launch
Blue clone' / 'Reset Red clone' / 'Launch Yellow clone'; tails carry only
qualifiers; dispatch labels and notes follow. Window titles were already
color-based.
Scripts: every user-visible print now leads with the color. launchers and
watchers use their existing DisplayName/Title/Color fields; reset_zcode.ps1,
sync_zcode_assets.ps1 and launch_cline_clone.ps1 gained small key-to-color
helpers. Identification lines (banners, section headers, summaries) keep
the frozen key as 'Color (key)' / 'Color / key' so CLI params and docs stay
correlatable; status lines are color-only. .lnk Description metadata is
color-led; the suite generator templates teach the pattern.
Frozen plumbing untouched: -Instance/-Target params, clone dirs, AUMIDs,
log filenames, port tables, window classes.
Verified: 14/14 parse-check, repo-integrity 11/11, GH_SEQ chained smoke of
all four submenus (17 stubbed launches, zero CMD errors), live -Instance
Sixth run ('[ram-guard] Orange is already running...'), sync -Target Sixth
-DryRun ('=== Orange / Sixth (ZCodeSixthHome) ===').

Walkthrough
Clone-facing menus, launcher messages, reset output, shortcut descriptions, and operational logs now use color names or configured titles. Existing target keys, paths, AUMIDs, and selection behavior remain in place.
Changes: Clone display labels
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Menu labels and naming convention AGENTS.md, GHOST.bat, docs/cli.md, CHANGELOG.md
Menus and CLI documentation use color names for clone labels while retaining menu numbering and frozen target keys. The documented row convention distinguishes display labels from technical identifiers.
Launcher, shortcut, and generated labels src/windows/launch_*.ps1, tools/install_*_shortcuts.ps1, tools/new_clone_suite.ps1
Launcher messages, shortcut descriptions, and generated suite labels use display names or colors in place of internal keys. Existing slot identifiers and launcher arguments remain unchanged.
Reset target and profile output src/windows/reset_zcode.ps1
Reset banners, progress messages, per-profile results, and completion messages use formatted color labels. Target selection and reset operations are unchanged.
fotedev/ghost#20: Establishes the color-based clone naming convention that this change applies to remaining labels and output.
fotedev/ghost#9: Adds the clone-suite generator and color-role documentation; this change updates generated labels to use the display-versus-key convention.
fotedev/ghost#21: Adds ZCode launch-log transcripts and a related menu message; this change updates that message while retaining technical keys in log filenames.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 63a6e
Update the menu tests before merging: they still expect the old names and fail CI. Generated submenu labels and launcher titles also need real color names, and shortcut installation reports misleading clone labels.

Explanation
The title states the main change: clone color names replace other user-facing clone names in menus, scripts, and output. The raw summary and PR objectives confirm this scope. Frozen keys remain in CLI parameters, paths, AUMIDs, and log filenames, and the title does not claim otherwise. The title is a single, specific sentence and matches the changeset.

Update the harness to the color labels the menus now render.
Lines 185-189, 201, and 214 still match the pre-PR labels (Reset Second instance, Launch c1). The head renders the color labels, so these checks fail. The harness then exits 1, and the GHOST.bat menu harness step in .github/workflows/ci.yml fails. The rows themselves still exist, so only the expectations need to change. Keep the color-tail checks so the branding coverage remains.

Review comment at @GHOST.bat around lines 115 - 139:
Update the harness expectations for menu rows that still use the old “Second
instance” and “Launch c1” labels: match the rendered color labels and
corresponding row descriptions for reset checks and “Launch Blue clone” for
launch checks. Keep the existing color-tail checks to preserve branding
coverage.

Use $spec.Def.DisplayName in the shortcut progress line.
Line 402 reads $def, which the loop at 399 does not set. After the instance-resolution loop, $def holds the last instance's definition, so every progress line shows the same label. The default run shows [Orange] for the Blue shortcut. Use $spec.Def.DisplayName, as the line already does for $spec.Def.ShortcutName.

Review comment at @tools/install_zcode_second_shortcuts.ps1 at line 402:
Update the shortcut progress line to use `$spec.Def.DisplayName` instead of
`$def.DisplayName`, so each line shows the display name for its current shortcut
specification.

Replace the <Color> placeholder in the generated submenu and detached launcher title.
Edit-GhostMenu writes the submenu text and the detached gid line without substituting <Color>. The generated GHOST.bat contains these results:
The submenu labels read Launch <Color> clone and Reset <Color> clone. The :Opt helper echoes its label argument unquoted, so cmd can parse the < as an input redirection. That row can fail to print.
The detached window title reads <Color> literally.
The generator has no color name for a new suite. $it.colors holds hex values, and the repository has no hex-to-name map. Add an explicit colorNames intake value. The first entry names clone 1. The default follows the existing palette.
while ($it.colors.Count -lt ($it.instanceCount - 1)) { $it.colors += '#808080' }
+ if (-not $it.colorNames[0]) { throw 'colorNames must start with a color name for clone 1' }
In the submenu here-string in Edit-GhostMenu:
-call :Opt 1 "Launch <Color> clone" "- first clone - own profile, identity, ports"-call :Opt 2 "Reset <Color> clone" ""+call :Opt 1 "Launch $($It.colorNames[0]) clone" "- first clone - own profile, identity, ports"+call :Opt 2 "Reset $($It.colorNames[0]) clone" ""
In the Detached gid line:
- ('if "%~1"=="{0}" (call :Detached "{1} <Color>" "-NoProfile" "src\windows\launch_{2}_clone.ps1" "" "Launcher opened in a separate window - it closes automatically when done." & exit /b)' -f ($GidBase), $Pascal, $Slug)+ ('if "%~1"=="{0}" (call :Detached "{1} {3}" "-NoProfile" "src\windows\launch_{2}_clone.ps1" "" "Launcher opened in a separate window - it closes automatically when done." & exit /b)' -f ($GidBase), $Pascal, $Slug, $It.colorNames[0])

Review comment at @tools/new_clone_suite.ps1 around lines 552 - 553:
Update New-Intake to provide the default colorNames list and require a nonempty
name for clone 1. In Edit-GhostMenu, use $It.colorNames[0] in both generated
submenu labels and the detached launcher title, replacing the literal
placeholder while preserving the existing labels and launcher behavior.

The .bat harness's M/N/O scenarios asserted the OLD key-led row text
('Reset Second instance.*- Blue', 'Launch c1'). GHOST.bat now renders
color-first labels ('Reset Blue clone', 'Launch Blue clone') per the
display-vocabulary unification, so the regexes follow. All 19 scenarios
pass locally.
