lib: zstd: only require a C compiler - #12538
Conversation
Apply the upstream CMake fix: meta/zstd@769723a Signed-off-by: Thomas Devoogdt <thomas@devoogdt.com> Signed-off-by: Eduardo Silva <eduardo@chronosphere.io>
Remove the system libzstd workaround so the C-only compile check tests the bundled library. Keep the system Kafka library preference. Signed-off-by: Thomas Devoogdt <thomas@devoogdt.com> Signed-off-by: Eduardo Silva <eduardo@chronosphere.io>

Dereference the language switches before checking flags
When ZSTD_BUILD_TESTS=OFF in a C-only MSVC build, CXX is not enabled but the MSVC branch still runs. Since _CXX is forwarded bare from the macro, EnableCompilerFlag receives the literal string _CXX; its if (_CXX) therefore evaluates true and calls CHECK_CXX_COMPILER_FLAG, causing configuration to abort because the CXX language is unavailable. Pass the evaluated boolean (for example, ${_CXX}) in every forwarding call so the advertised C-only support also works on Windows.

Keep the amd64 decompressor enabled without C++
When tests are disabled and CXX is not enabled, CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER_ID is unset, so ADD_ZSTD_COMPILATION_FLAGS skips its GNU/Clang branch entirely despite _C being enabled. Consequently ZSTD_HAS_NOEXECSTACK remains false and lib/CMakeLists.txt adds ZSTD_DISABLE_ASM, silently dropping huf_decompress_amd64.S; a standalone x86_64 C-only configure reproduces generated flags containing -DZSTD_DISABLE_ASM, whereas the parent revision includes the assembly source. Base compiler detection on the enabled C language and make the no-exec-stack success condition ignore disabled languages.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Remove the remaining C++ assumptions from C-only builds.
When ZSTD_BUILD_TESTS is off, a standalone C-only configure leaves CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER_ID empty. The guard at Line 57 of lib/zstd-1.5.7/build/cmake/CMakeModules/AddZstdCompilationFlags.cmake then skips the GNU/Clang C flags. The condition at Lines 90–92 also requires a C++ flag result before it sets ZSTD_HAS_NOEXECSTACK, which can disable assembly. Select the flag block with CMAKE_C_COMPILER_ID, and require the C++ flag result only when C++ is enabled. (cmake.org)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Forward the macro argument values to EnableCompilerFlag.
The changed registrations pass bare _C, _CXX, and _LD. CMake substitutes macro arguments through ${_C}, ${_CXX}, and ${_LD}; bare names do not forward the caller’s ON or OFF values. As a result, the flag checks do not use the selected languages or linker setting, even when C++ is enabled. Update every changed registration, including the GNU/Clang and MSVC branches, to pass the argument values. (cmake.org)

FYI, there is also that other one #10341, for which I had no success to upstream it. |
|
I get following error after this pull request was merged on Windows (Visual Studio 2022 x64): It seems this pull request is incomplete - I tried to add changes mentioned in https://github.com/fluent/fluent-bit/pull/12538/changes#r4222687137 and it helped (solved this issue). Refer to meta/zstd#4810 which is about the same. |
Bundled zstd requires a C++ compiler even when its tests are disabled. This prevents C-only Fluent Bit builds from using the bundled library and forces the compile-check workflow to use system zstd.
Apply the upstream CMake fix so C++ is enabled only for zstd tests, and remove the system-zstd workaround from the C-only CI job.
This replaces #10316 on current master. Both commits preserve Thomas Devoogdt as the original author, his original author dates, and his DCO sign-offs. The library and workflow changes remain separate; patch IDs match the original commits. Commit messages now comply with commit-prefix lint.
The bundled-library patch comes from facebook/zstd commit 769723a. Compression code, public APIs, and the bundled version are unchanged.

This patch changes CMake and CI configuration only.
