Peer-to-Peer LoRA Example?

Your example in the documentation shows the setup and API usage that seems to require the Digi X-ON cloud subscription and a gateway.
Is it possible to use this library for peer-to-peer communication among XBee LR modules?
What would a toy example for this look like, and what would be effective payload-size limitations for the exchanged packets?

Unfortunately, the XBee LR currently only supports LoRaWAN so it requires a LoRaWAN gateway and server.
