Direct Uploads

Adds support for uploading single files directly (unzipped). Callers can set the new archive parameter to false to skip zipping the file during upload. Right now, we only support single files. The action will fail if the glob passed resolves to multiple files. The name parameter is also ignored with this setting. Instead, the name of the artifact will be the name of the uploaded file.

ESM

To support new versions of the @actions/* packages, we've upgraded the package to ESM.

v8 - What's new

[!IMPORTANT] actions/download-artifact@v8 has been migrated to an ESM module. This should be transparent to the caller but forks might need to make significant changes.

[!IMPORTANT] Hash mismatches will now error by default. Users can override this behavior with a setting change (see below).

Direct downloads

To support direct uploads in actions/upload-artifact, the action will no longer attempt to unzip all downloaded files. Instead, the action checks the Content-Type header ahead of unzipping and skips non-zipped files. Callers wishing to download a zipped file as-is can also set the new skip-decompress parameter to true.

Enforced checks (breaking)

A previous release introduced digest checks on the download. If a download hash didn't match the expected hash from the server, the action would log a warning. Callers can now configure the behavior on mismatch with the digest-mismatch parameter. To be secure by default, we are now defaulting the behavior to error which will fail the workflow run.

ESM

To support new versions of the @actions/* packages, we've upgraded the package to ESM.

Release notes vs our usage

• actions/setup-node v6 -> v7: moved to ESM, adds cache outputs, drops the dummy NODE_AUTH_TOKEN export. Still node24, and node-version, cache and cache-dependency-path are unchanged. We never use registry-url or NODE_AUTH_TOKEN, so the token change doesn't affect us.
• actions/upload-artifact v6 -> v7: ESM, plus an opt-in archive: false. name, path and if-no-files-found are unchanged and the default is still a zip.
• actions/download-artifact v7 -> v8: ESM. Two breaking changes: it skips unzipping non-zip downloads, and a digest mismatch now fails the job by default. We download zipped artifacts that upload-artifact made in the same run, and path and merge-multiple are unchanged.

Workflows touched: ci.yaml, bot-scripts.yaml and release.yaml. assign, stale, cla, labeler and changelog don't use these actions, and there is no update.yaml.

Proved on GitHub

• ci.yaml: green on this PR. setup-node v7 ran with the npm cache in the Desktop job.
• bot-scripts.yaml: green on this PR (the test check, setup-node v7).
• release.yaml: I ran it with workflow_dispatch on this branch (run 41281122108). All three installer jobs passed (windows, macos, ubuntu). setup-node v7 set up Node 22 with the npm cache, and upload-artifact v7 uploaded sentient-{windows,macos,ubuntu}-latest with sha256 digests (about 257, 623 and 335 MB). The Draft release job was skipped as designed, because it only runs on a v* tag.

Not verified: download-artifact@v8 in the Draft release job. It only runs on a tag push, so the first real check is the next release tag. Low risk: same-run zip artifacts, upload v7 records the digests that v8 now enforces, and merge-multiple is unchanged. If it ever fails on a digest mismatch, digest-mismatch: warn is the escape hatch.

Verdict: good to merge.
