This is essentially what I did for my MS thesis. I designed Y splitter photonic devices with Lumerical (Lumopt more specifically) and maximized power transmission for the ports. I then trained all of this in a neural network, and then used SHAP in order to get an idea as to which features of the device help towards increased device perofrmance.
