## Prerequisites

- Go 1.26.7 or newer, matching the `go` line in `go.mod`
- GNU Make
- Bash, Python 3 with PyYAML, jq, gzip, and tar (the shell regression suite)
- ShellCheck 0.11.0 (`make lint` and `make check`)
- A Docker daemon only when you run a box, or the optional integration tests below

Builds pass `-buildvcs=false`. A shallow checkout or a linked git worktree can
make Go's VCS stamping fail, and the CLI version is set with `-ldflags`.

## Build

```bash
make tx9
```

That writes `bin/tx9` (gitignored). The same build by hand:

```bash
go build -buildvcs=false -ldflags "-X github.com/davis7dotsh/tx9/internal/version.Version=dev" -o bin/tx9 .
```

`go install github.com/davis7dotsh/tx9@latest` installs a published module
version. A source build reports version `dev` and tags its image `tx9-box:dev`.

The binary embeds `box.env`, `provision/`, `guest/`, and `docker/` at compile
time. Rebuild after editing those files before the next `tx9 create` or
`tx9 upgrade`.

Cross-compile the four release binaries and `checksums.txt` into `dist/`:

```bash
make dist VERSION=0.12.1
```

## Test

`make check` is the full local gate: shell syntax, ShellCheck, guest
regressions, a gofmt check, `go vet`, and `go test ./...`.

```bash
make check
make go-check # gofmt, go vet, go test only
make format # gofmt -w .
```

GitHub Actions (`.github/workflows/ci.yml`) runs the same gofmt check,
`go vet -buildvcs=false ./...`, `go build -buildvcs=false`, and
`go test -buildvcs=false ./...` on pull requests and on pushes to `main`.

`.depot/workflows/check.yml` runs `make check` and the `site/` Worker checks
on Depot. Changes under `guest/`, `provision/`, `docker/`, `scripts/`, or
`tests/` still need `make check` locally.

### Docker integration tests

`TestEphemeralDockerIntegration` and `TestExecDockerIntegration` talk to a
live daemon. `go test` skips them unless `TX9_TEST_DOCKER_IMAGE` is an image
already present locally that provides `/bin/sh`, `cat`, `ls`, and `sleep`.
The tests create disposable containers and do not mount host data. CI leaves
the variable unset.

```bash
TX9_TEST_DOCKER_IMAGE=ubuntu:24.04 go test -buildvcs=false ./internal/docker/
```

`make go-check` and `make check` pick up the same variable when it is set in
the environment.

## Makefile targets

| Target | What it runs |
| --- | --- |
| `syntax` | `bash -n` / `sh -n`, and a Python compile of the guest and release scripts |
| `lint` | ShellCheck on the bash scripts, and on `scripts/install.sh` as POSIX sh |
| `test` | `tests/static.sh`, `tests/hermes-state.sh`, and `tests/regressions-*.sh` |
| `go-check` | gofmt check, `go vet ./...`, `go test ./...` |
| `check` | `syntax`, `lint`, `test`, and `go-check` |
| `format` | `gofmt -w .` |
| `tx9` | Build `bin/tx9` |
| `dist` | Cross-compile release binaries into `dist/` (`VERSION=` stamps the binary) |

`make test` is the shell suite. The Go tests are `make go-check`.

## Install

Prerequisites: a running Docker daemon your user can access. Release binaries
are Linux and macOS, amd64 and arm64. The first `tx9 create` builds the box
image on that daemon. The build takes several minutes and is cached after that.

Install the current release into `~/.local/bin` (`TX9_INSTALL_DIR` overrides
the directory). The installer prints a `PATH` line when that directory is
absent from `PATH`:

```bash
curl -fsSL https://tx9.col-agents.com/install | sh
tx9 version
```

Apply the installer’s PATH change before invoking tx9.

When the install directory is absent from PATH, scripts/install.sh only prints an export command. The documented sequence does not apply that change, so tx9 version can fail with command not found.

🐛 Suggested fix
 curl -fsSL https://tx9.col-agents.com/install | sh
+export PATH="${TX9_INSTALL_DIR:-$HOME/.local/bin}:$PATH"
 tx9 version

Update the README install example so it applies the installer directory to PATH
before invoking tx9; use the TX9_INSTALL_DIR override when set and otherwise
default to $HOME/.local/bin.

Or install a published module version. This needs the Go version in `go.mod`
(1.26.7 or newer):

```bash
go install github.com/davis7dotsh/tx9@latest
```

Or build from a checkout. `make tx9` writes `./bin/tx9`:

```bash
make tx9
./bin/tx9 version
```

Create bin/ before the source build.

A fresh checkout has no bin/ directory. Both make tx9 and the documented manual build write to bin/tx9, so the build fails before producing the binary. Add mkdir -p bin to the Makefile target and before the manual command.

Suggested fix
 tx9:
+	mkdir -p bin
 	go build -buildvcs=false -ldflags "$(LDFLAGS)" -o bin/tx9 ./cmd/tx9

Ensure the source-build instructions create the bin directory before writing
bin/tx9: add directory creation to the make tx9 target and before the documented

A source build reports version `dev` and tags its image `tx9-box:dev`.

Create a box, then open a shell in the agent container. With no name, `tx9
create` generates one and prints it:

```bash
tx9 create my-box
tx9 list
tx9 enter my-box
P2 Checkout examples cannot find tx9
If the user has no installed copy of tx9 on PATH, these commands fail with “command not found,” even after the checkout build succeeds. The checkout instructions build ./bin/tx9, but these examples switch to bare tx9 without adding its directory to PATH. This is a non-blocking documentation issue: show ./bin/tx9 for checkout users, or explain how to add the checkout’s bin directory to PATH.
Artifacts
Original executed checkout validation script
  • The unchanged script used for the original validation was uploaded successfully, preserving the exact commands that reproduced the failure.
Original command output before building the checkout
  • The original before-build capture was uploaded unchanged and shows all three bare commands failing with exit code 127.
Original command output after successfully building the checkout
  • The original after-build capture was uploaded unchanged and shows successful build/version commands followed by the same three command-not-found failures.
