FEATURE: Choose None, Mute, or Duck while recording - #40
Also used: Claude Opus 5.5 (T3 Code) — independent review
Choose None, Mute, or Duck for system output during dictation, with durable recovery and respect for manual volume changes.
Default fresh configurations to None, migrate the earlier enabled mute preference to Mute, and keep Duck fixed at 25% of the starting volume. Unsupported outputs stay unchanged.
Save originals by stable device UID and control element before changing output; retain unresolved recovery through device loss, write failures, relaunch, and later takes.
Apply the chosen mode after microphone audio arrives, restore owned changes when capture ends, and preserve a user's different volume setting.
Give Bluetooth profiles a bounded settling period before a single adjustment; cancel that adjustment if capture ends, the route changes, or the profile does not settle. Preferences reserve a stable caption height.
Based on saphid's original contribution, updated onto current main with recovery fixes and independent review feedback.
Verification so far: bun run check, bun run lint, bun run fmt:check, generated API verification, and the Swift build passed. Native built-in speaker checks at 435a7db covered Mute, Duck, manual override, and kill/relaunch recovery; the audio implementation at 669126e passed all listed static and build checks. Caption-only follow-up 3a0c7eb passed formatting, generated API verification, Swift compilation and development packaging; final native built-in verification remains pending. Independent review found no blockers; its four low-severity findings were fixed.
An AirPods call-profile volume change observed during verification motivated the settling change; its cause and final fix are not yet confirmed on that hardware. Bluetooth profile-switch/reconnect and USB checks remain outstanding because those devices are unavailable, as agreed with Davis.

Status at 3a0c7eb: build/static checks and Greptile passed; CodeRabbit is neutral and Macroscope skipped. Review findings are addressed. Final native built-in and caption verification remains pending; Bluetooth and USB verification remains explicitly outstanding. PR stays open and unmerged.
Replace the mute toggle with a dropdown. Duck lowers the default output
to a quarter of its volume for the take and restores it afterwards, with
the same crash-recovery record as mute. An existing
muteOutputWhileRecording: true config loads as Mute.
Mute and duck now apply once microphone audio arrives. A Bluetooth
headset whose microphone records switches to a call profile with its own
volume elements; ducking before that switch lowered the media volume,
left the take unducked, and stranded the media volume at a quarter.

Walkthrough
The recording output setting now supports none, mute, and duck. The controller applies the selected mode after recorder levels arrive. System output controls journal changes and support restoration. Configuration decoding accepts the legacy mute setting.

Summary
Mode configuration and preferences Sources/Inlay/System/SystemOutputMuter.swift, Sources/InlayCore/InlayConfiguration.swift, Sources/Inlay/Views/PreferencesPage.swift
The setting uses none, mute, and duck modes. Configuration maps the legacy Boolean to none or mute when the new key is absent. The preferences page provides a mode picker and mode-specific caption.
System output control and recovery Sources/Inlay/System/SystemOutputMuter.swift, Sources/Inlay/System/AudioDeviceStore.swift, docs/architecture.md
System output controls can read and write volume. Ducking targets 25% of the starting volume. The journal records changes for recovery, and restoration checks whether the current value still matches the recorded change. Bluetooth adjustments wait for a bounded quiet period.
Recording lifecycle and output action Sources/Inlay/InlayController.swift
The controller marks the output action pending after recording starts. It applies mute or duck after recorder levels arrive and clears the pending state on reset or finish. Shutdown stops the output muter.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 66912
Duck mode now avoids losing the original volume after a failed restore. One narrow gap remains: if the app crashes during a take and the output device is also gone at the next launch, the saved volume is discarded and the device may stay at the ducked level. Fixing the Duck caption wording is a small cleanup.

Explanation
The title "FEATURE: Choose None, Mute, or Duck while recording" matches the main change: a new three-mode setting (None, Mute, Duck) for system output audio during recording, replacing the old mute toggle. It is short, specific, and states the primary change. The "FEATURE:" prefix is a minor style point and does not affect relevance.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is specific and on-topic. It names the three recording modes (None, Mute, Duck), the 25% duck level, the stable-UID recovery journal, Bluetooth settling, and the changed files, all of which match the changeset summaries. It also reports verification status. Level of detail is not a criterion for this check.

A restore that failed (for example while a Bluetooth headset switches
profile) leaves its entry pending. The next take now skips that element
instead of recording the already-lowered volume as a second original,
which made the final restore land on the quieter level.

Reviewed the current CodeRabbit inline finding, review body, and overview. The caption correction is in 3a0c7eb.
The overview’s claim that recovery is discarded when the output is absent describes the older implementation. In the current SystemOutputMuter.retryPending(), an unresolved UID or failed restore retains its journal entry. persistRecord() removes the file only when both mute and volume entries are empty; device observations trigger later recovery, and a new take cannot replace an unresolved original. Bluetooth/USB reconnect proof is still explicitly outstanding because the hardware is unavailable; this code review does not claim that proof.
The docstring-coverage warning is advisory and is not a repository check. I’m retaining focused comments on ownership, persistence ordering, settling and recovery rather than adding documentation solely to meet that external percentage.
Local formatting, full generated API verification, Swift compilation and development packaging passed for the caption fix. CI and final native verification remain pending; the PR stays open and unmerged.
