Cancelling a take that has usable audio no longer discards it. The server still transcribes it into history, and the HUD shows a short countdown with Undo to paste it after all; pressing the dictation key also undoes. Recordings the server has sealed can be transcribed again from history, and a failed transcription is attempted once more automatically. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Old cancellation can erase retry
If a cancelled recording is retried while its original processing run is still unwinding, the old run’s abort handler can mark the newly queued record cancelled. The retry job then skips that terminal record, so “Transcribe again” does not transcribe it. The old run must be prevented from changing the new attempt before merging.

Fixed in 747757e: an aborted run's catch path now leaves the record alone. cancelRecord already saved the cancellation, and a retry may have queued it again. enqueueProcessing also removes only its own controller.

When a recording was finished with a valid list continuation, retry queues it without that context. Processing therefore loses the prior list used for formatting and insertion, so the same audio can produce a different list result. Preserve the original continuation before merging.

Fixed in e0af2fa: the input list context is saved privately as continuation-input.json when the recording is sealed, and retry reuses it.

A kept cancelled take reports “Saved to history” without waiting for an earlier take’s delivery. If that delivery is still running, it can replace the shared result status afterward. This does not change either take’s delivery, but it can leave the displayed result describing the wrong take.

Fixed: the history-only result is reported after earlier deliveries finish. Since e0af2fa the decision itself is made at that point.

If upload or transcription fails during the four-second window, the failed take cannot be pasted, but its Undo control remains visible until the timer expires. This briefly offers a misleading action rather than causing a further delivery failure.

An aborted processing run no longer rewrites a record that a retry has queued again, and a retry clears the previous run's output. The undo window closes when its take fails or pending work is stopped, and a kept take reports its result only after earlier deliveries finish. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A pending take now commits to pasting only when its delivery starts, so cancelling it while it waits behind another take still offers Undo. One Escape press no longer closes the Undo window it opened. Retrying a recording reuses the list context it was sealed with. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winDo not cancel a take after its delivery gate is consumed.
When
pending.gate.consume()returnstrue, delivery has started. A later cancel can remove the pending take and cancel its task becausehold()returnsfalse.If the field paste has already been sent, cancellation interrupts confirmation. The paste can still occur, but the controller exits before it records the delivery receipt. The take can therefore appear cancelled while text was inserted.

History receipt waits for recording
If a new recording is in progress when a kept cancelled take finishes processing, the take waits for recording capture to end before sending its “Not pasted” receipt. This delays the history update and keeps later takes waiting behind it, even though this take will not be pasted.

Fixed in 0bddc44: Keep cancelled calls a dedicated keepCancelledTake() that always closes the window. Only cancel paths that can share one physical Escape use the 0.3 s guard.
A take kept in history no longer waits for a new recording to finish before reporting, and the HUD's Keep cancelled button always closes the undo window instead of sharing the Escape duplicate guard. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

@bmdavis419 could you review this when you get a chance? It keeps a cancelled dictation in history instead of discarding it. It shows a 4-second Undo on the HUD so you can still paste it, and it adds a Transcribe again retry for failed or cancelled recordings. CI is green and the bot review comments are addressed. I checked the history-only path in V07 Dev against a local dev server. I couldn't drive the floating pill's Undo button or the Escape flow through computer use, so a quick manual check of those would be really helpful. Details are in the description. |

…path finishDictation's short-take guard called cancelDictation, which re-read the clock and could treat a take released just under the minimum as long enough to keep, opening an undo window for audio the server rejects. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Transcribe again now sits last in the action row so the other buttons do not shift when it appears or disappears, and it stays disabled while its retry request is in flight. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A cancelled take kept in history set lastDeliveryStatus to kept but left lastDelivery on the previous take's message, so the footer could say "Inserted at your cursor" while the HUD said "Saved to history". Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

If saving continuation-input.json fails, finishing the recording still succeeds, but a later “Transcribe again” has no saved list context. With the same audio, a retry started a numbered list at 1 instead of continuing at 2. This non-blocking concern means the user may have to correct the retried text.
Artifacts
Authored continuation-save and retry check
- The Bun script runs both save conditions against GenerationService with stubbed inference, reproducing the context-dependent output change.
Retry output with continuation input saved
- The baseline command completed successfully and retry produced “2. bananas” with the saved list context.
Retry output after continuation-input save failure
- A dangling symlink blocked the sidecar write; finish still queued the recording, and retry produced “1. bananas” without its list context.

Permanent errors delay later recordings
When transcription rejects an unchanged request, this code attempts it again unless the recording was aborted. Processing is serial, so the unnecessary attempt holds up later recordings: an invalid-request error caused two failed attempts and increased the following recording’s queue wait from 250 ms to 497 ms. Skip permanent errors before merging so they cannot consume another turn in the queue.
Artifacts
- The authored test sends two recordings through the API and times transcription calls, providing the command used for both comparisons.
API responses before the retry change
- The captured baseline run reports HTTP responses, one deterministic-error attempt, and a 250 ms follower wait, establishing the comparison.
API responses with the retry change
- The captured current-code run reports the same HTTP outcomes, two deterministic-error attempts, and a 497 ms wait, supporting the queue-delay finding.

Server-side check of the retry route on the ported branch: isolated dev server, real Whisper (Metal) and Qwen (MLX), 11 s of speech sent over the HTTP API.
I couldn't exercise the HUD undo window, Escape or the History button here, because that needs Inlay Dev on screen. |
What changes
Pressing another key (or Escape) while dictating used to discard the take. Now:
cancelled).POST /v1/generations/{id}/retryputs a failed or cancelled recording with sealed audio back on the processing queue. History has a Transcribe again button for those records. The server also retries a failed transcription once on its own before marking the recording failed.Takes shorter than 0.25 s (which the server rejects) and takes cancelled while still starting are discarded as before.
Implementation notes
PendingDictationhas aTakeDeliveryGate. The take commits to pasting only when its delivery is about to start, after earlier deliveries finish. Stopping or failing a take resolves its gate and clears the undo UI, so the delivery chain never hangs.enqueueProcessingremoves only its own controller.continuation-input.jsonwhen it is sealed. A retry formats lists exactly as the original run did. It is not exposed as an artifact.Verification
swift build, bun run check, bun run lint, bun run fmt:checkpass. CI is green.bun run devserver with real whisper/Qwen helpers. Cancelling a microphone test kept the take out of the app's result area. History showed it as Completed · Not pasted with its transcript.bun run devhot reload fails with "Another V07 server is already using this data directory" because the old process still holds the lock.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
Note
Keep cancelled dictations in history with a 4-second undo window and retry endpoint
Undo to pasteandKeepactions; after the window, the take is kept in history without pasting. Pressing the dictation key during the window performs the undo instead of starting a new take./v1/generations/{id}/retryendpoint (202/409/503) and aTranscribe againbutton in history for failed or cancelled non-imported records with saved inference audio. The server resets the record to queued, reuses saved continuation data, and makes one additional transcription attempt on non-aborted errors.keptDictationDeliveryStatusshown asSaved to history, plus a countdown-ring undo view in the HUD.enqueueProcessingin generation-service.ts.Macroscope summarized e23595f.
Changes are needed before merging: permanent transcription errors still delay later recordings by consuming an unnecessary second attempt. The separate list-context save concern is non-blocking.
Findings
Fix with agent prompt
Summary
Cancelled recordings now stay in history without being pasted.
Previous comments 1–6 are addressed. Two previously reported concerns remain: permanent transcription errors are retried unnecessarily, delaying later recordings, and a failed list-context save can change the formatting of a later retry. The permanent-error retry issue must be fixed before merging; the list-context save concern is non-blocking.
The macOS HUD countdown, Undo click, and global Escape behavior remain unverified on screen.
