MC breaks if started in a folder, after git init without commits

Short description

What happened?

"Magic Context could not work out a project identity for this directory, so its memory features are paused. magic-context.log names the cause (search for "memory features paused"), for example a git command that failed."

Agent even made a note about it:
"Retry memory update #1570 after git access recovers Memory write failed right after git init (identity resolution paused). "

Additionally, the diagnostics sends unredated full provider/model combinations from the local config. I had to remove some, as i rather not send some provider name(s) to a public issue. Would be nice to redact provider/model(s) or not include them at all.

When Magic Context starts in a folder, it asks git for the repository's first commit and uses that as the project's identity. A repository with no commits yet is supposed to fall back to an identity based on the folder until the first commit exists. In your log the git call was reported as a timeout (git_timeout), so that fallback never ran and memory features paused. A repository with no commits should make git fail immediately, not time out, so something on this path is behaving differently on Windows. We're looking into it.

To get going in the meantime, make a first commit (for example git commit --allow-empty -m "init") and restart OpenCode.

Two things would help:

In that folder, how long does git rev-list --max-parents=0 HEAD take, and what does it print? Please also include git --version.
Does the problem go away after the first commit and a restart?

Traced it with GIT_TRACE_PERFORMANCE + GIT_TRACE2_EVENT pointed at files — git never starts during the timeout. Timeline from one repro (traces + magic-context.log):

21:38:45.9–49.4: 4 identity-resolution rounds (boot + hooks), each rev-list --max-parents=0 HEAD → rev-parse --git-dir → rev-parse --verify --quiet HEAD: 3–8ms each, correct no_commits → dir: identity registered.
21:38:56.025: last git spawn in the trace (unrelated rev-parse, 3ms).
~21:38:57.8: first /ctx-status after boot → MC's next execFileSync("git", …) waits its 5s timeout.
During that window the trace files contain zero events — trace2 emits version+start at process entry for every spawn (including instantly-failing ones), and there are none. Git was never created.
21:39:02.796: memory features paused … git_timeout.
So on Windows the child-process spawn inside the opencode host intermittently stalls before process creation, times out at 5s, and the resulting killed/SIGTERM error classifies as git_timeout. Git itself is fast (51–110ms from CLI, 3–8ms traced in-process; git 2.55.0.windows.5, opencode 1.18.31, plugin 0.49.10, Win10 19045). It's intermittent at process level — one host ran per-pass resolutions fine for 25 minutes — but when it hits, it's the first session-path resolution after boot, which in a commitless repo is exactly when /ctx-status or a memory write runs (repos with commits cache their git: identity at boot and never re-probe, which is why only fresh-git init projects see it).
Two suggestions: retry the probe once before pausing (the next spawn usually works), and/or degrade to the dir: fallback identity during a transient failure instead of pausing memory features.

We found the likely cause and have a fix for the next patch release.

A repository with no commits now gets its folder identity straight from the .git files, without running git, so a new git init folder will no longer pause memory features. No, this is the first time i've ever saw that screen. Any other session worked fine.
Making a commit instantly fixed the problem, and it doesn't appear since.
