Support Swift Package Manager

We set up a Capacitor app with SPM instead of Cocoa pods. Therefor this library doesn't work for us.

A Package.swift file/ SPM support

For now i forked this library and somehow managed to get this working, but honestly I don't feel super safe about it, as I also had to mess with SQLCipher. Links I followed:

CocoaPods announced that its Specs repo will become read-only in May 2025 and no new podspecs will be accepted after that. Are there any plans to support Swift Package Manager, or has anyone already managed to set it up?

With Capacitor 8 using SPM by default and other Capacitor plugins no longer supporting CocoaPods, we need your assistance in releasing a SPM based version of the package please

PRs are welcome, but as far as I know, https://github.com/sqlcipher/sqlcipher/ does not officially support SPM.

If I'm not mistaken the SPM version is sitting at https://github.com/sqlcipher/sqlcipher.swift that was introduced by Zetetic

PS: There is also a new plugin by @robingenz which seems to have SPM Support out of the box at https://github.com/capawesome-team/capacitor-plugins/tree/main/packages/sqlite, but unfortunately it is not open source, so I cannot say something about the quality and features.

@paulstelzer Thank you! I will take a look and create a dev release for testing.

Also, thank you for mentioning the Capawesome SQLite plugin. It maintains the same quality as all our Insider plugins. The most significant difference lies in the improved web support with SQLite WASM and the fact that we do NOT utilise SQLCipher for unencrypted databases. This offers the advantage of not being subject to encryption export regulations and not needing to submit an annual self-classification report to the U.S. government.

I tested this in my Capacitor 8 project for iOS (Android too just to be sure) and it worked without issues. Any estimated date for merge/release into the main code?
