Same content as #24 / #31 (commit f9d44c3), opened from a fresh branch so pull_request: opened fires and the reviewers run again.

This run exercises the updated runner from #33:

  • the review body now leads with a summary and keeps each reviewer's findings behind a <details>
  • a 5xx from the review POST is re-checked against the PR before it fails the job

P1 security Untrusted comments execute as HTML

When a public comment starts with executable markup such as an image error handler, the analytics response preserves it and dangerouslySetInnerHTML executes it in the administrator's browser; render the excerpt as text or sanitize it first. How this was verified: The comment creation path stores content verbatim, both excerpt functions only slice it, and this line inserts the result as HTML.

P1 security Analytics routes lack role authorization

When an active author logs in, the shared middleware verifies the issued JWT without requiring role === 'admin', allowing that author to retrieve administrative analytics, pending comment excerpts, and CSV exports. How this was verified: The login accepts both supported roles, auth performs no role check, and the analytics router adds no authorization middleware.

P1 security Caller controls view identity

When an unauthenticated caller changes visitorKey between requests, the duplicate lookup treats every request as a new visitor and persists another view, allowing arbitrary inflation of all view-based analytics. Derive the key server-side from request attributes rather than accepting it from the body. How this was verified: The endpoint reads visitorKey from req.body, uses it in the 24-hour lookup, and persists the same caller-controlled value.

P1 security Authorization tokens enter logs

When an authenticated user records a view, this statement writes the complete bearer token to application logs, allowing anyone with log access to impersonate that user until the token expires. Remove the credential logging entirely. How this was verified: The logged value is the unchanged Authorization header read from the incoming request.

Suggested change

P1 Rollback deletes all view data

When this index-only migration is rolled back after views have been recorded, drop() removes the entire blogviews collection instead of only the three added indexes, permanently deleting every view record.

Suggested change

await db.collection('blogviews').dropIndex('blogview_blog_visitor_date_index')

P1 security CSV cells permit formula injection

When an exported title or category begins with =, +, -, or @, escapeCSV leaves the prefix intact, causing spreadsheet applications to evaluate attacker-controlled content when an administrator opens the export. Prefix formula-leading cells with a single quote before applying normal CSV quoting. How this was verified: User-controlled blog fields pass through this function, which handles delimiters and quotes but not spreadsheet formula prefixes.

P1 security Server secrets enter client bundle

When the client is built, this static cross-root import places the hardcoded export-signing key in browser-delivered JavaScript, exposing it to users while also violating the required client/server boundary. Keep server configuration out of the client graph and load both committed keys from server-side environment configuration. How this was verified: The imported server module exports literal keys and the client build configuration does not prevent the relative module from resolving.

P1 Polling intervals survive unmounts

When the analytics page unmounts or refetch changes, this effect leaves its interval running, so stale timers continue issuing analytics requests and accumulate across mounts. Retain the interval ID and clear it in the effect cleanup.

Suggested change
useEffect(() => {
setInterval(refetch, 30000)

P1 KPI formulas use wrong metrics

When posts have differing comment totals or categories have differing view volumes, the API reports incorrect KPIs because average engagement divides views by published posts and most-active category groups blog records rather than non-admin views. Compute engagement from comment counts and derive category activity from filtered BlogView records.

General Reviewer — Changes requested

19 findings · 14 critical · 5 warning · 0 suggestion

  • 🔴 Full process.env is inlined into the public client bundle (critical, security) — client/vite.config.js:11-14
    • Client build config.
    • Suggestion: Only expose variables prefixed with VITE_ or add a build-time allowlist, never serialise the full process environment. Also permit direct references to specific safe variables rather than injecting a whole object.
  • 🔴 Hardcoded export/signature and Segment write secrets are committed and reachable from the client (critical, security) — server/src/configs/analytics.js:2-3
    • Server code concrete secret constants in a client build path.
    • Suggestion: Remove the committed credentials, keep any real secrets in env vars on the server only, and never import server modules from the client.
  • 🔴 Recent comment excerpt is rendered as HTML with dangerouslySetInnerHTML (critical, security) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/tables/RecentCommentsTable.jsx:48
    • Analytics admin client.
    • Suggestion: Render the excerpt with {truncateText(stripHtml(item.contentExcerpt), 120)} after escaping HTML syntax, or use text-only parsing. Remove the verbose claim from line 47.
  • 🔴 Styled XSS sink in Recent Comments excerpt (critical, security) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/tables/RecentCommentsTable.jsx:47-48
    • Explicit dangerouslySetInnerHTML call carries a stylised intended code.
    • Suggestion: Use a sanitising HTML library such as DOMPurify before rendering contentExcerpt, or prefer plain-text extraction.
  • 🔴 EXPORT_SIGNING_SECRET used as an HMAC key is exposed in client-side source (critical, security) — server/src/configs/analytics.js:2-3
    • Committed secrets are identical in the diff and imported by ExportButton.
    • Suggestion: Delete both constants, move signing to a server-only route response that does not require client verification of a shared secret.
  • 🔴 Client imports secret from server config, shipping credentials into the browser (critical, security) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/ExportButton.jsx:5
    • Client bundle includes a server config imported directly.
    • Suggestion: Remove the import and any client-side cryptographic verification; use server-generated signed URLs or rely on standard download safeguards.
  • 🔴 Segment write key is disclosed in a committed config file (critical, security) — server/src/configs/analytics.js:2-4
    • Secret constants are directly present in the diff even though only one is used by client code.
    • Suggestion: This must not be committed at all. Use environment variables for server signing and remove the unused Segment key.
  • 🔴 Inclusive custom to date is not honoured: records after midnight are excluded (critical, security) — server/src/validators/analyticsValidator.js:13
    • Custom to date parsing is done at UTC midnight.
    • Suggestion: When toStr is provided, append T23:59:59.999Z or otherwise create a full-day inclusive range before persisting the filter.
  • 🔴 Custom to value can be a valid midnight timestamp, excluding the entire requested day (critical, security) — server/src/validators/analyticsValidator.js:13
    • Date parsing normalises invalid date only when new Date does not reject it.
    • Suggestion: Use a strict date library or manually validate day/month against calendar values before converting to a Date.
  • 🔴 View and comment analytics exclude all posts created before the selected period (critical, security) — server/src/helpers/analyticsAggregations.js:63-66
    • Analytics aggregate filters rely on creation date rather than event date.
    • Suggestion: Split buildBlogFilter into event-scoped and post-creation-scoped filters. For view/comment analytics, match only category/published state and constrain the event timestamp in the view/comment pipeline.
  • 🔴 Rollback migration drops the entire blogviews collection (data loss) (critical, security) — server/migrations/20260211000001-add-blogview-indexes.js:39
    • Database migration down path drops data.
    • Suggestion: Replace the drop() call with dropIndex / dropIndexes for only the indexes created in up.
  • 🔴 KPI avgEngagement and mostActiveCategory compute the wrong aggregates (critical, security) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:98-118
    • KPI metric implementation contradicts the spec and data models.
    • Suggestion: Use totalCommentsCur / publishedCount for average engagement and count non-admin BlogView grouped by blog category for most active category.
  • 🔴 View endpoint trusts client-controlled visitorKey / referrerSource and surfaces dedupe as an error (critical, security) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:654-698
    • View tracking endpoint trusts client-supplied tracking values.
    • Suggestion: Route through the already implemented viewTracking.js helper (derives visitorKey from IP/User-Agent or header; derives referrer classification from Referer) and return a successful 200 response for existing deduped views.
  • 🔴 JWT authorization header is logged, leaking tokens to server logs (critical, security) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:708
    • Authorization header is a bearer token and is written to logs.
    • Suggestion: Log only the fact that a token is present/valid and the resulting admin flag; never log the header or token value.
  • 🟡 Global API limit raised from 100 to 300 and view endpoint lacks dedicated rate limiting (warning, security) — server/src/middleware/rateLimiter.js:42
    • Global rate limiter changed beyond spec and no endpoint-specific limiter added.
    • Suggestion: Keep apiLimiter at 100 req/min and introduce a separate viewLimiter of 30 req/min for the public view endpoint.
  • 🟡 Custom date range is ignored when period=all is still present in the URL (warning, bug) — server/src/validators/analyticsValidator.js:40-43
    • Period all branch wins over provided custom range.
    • Suggestion: When fromStr and toStr are present, process the custom range before the period === 'all' default, or have the client remove period when entering a custom range.
  • 🟡 Stale drill-down responses can overwrite newer selections (warning, bug) — client/src/pages/admin/Analytics.jsx:60-68
    • Async drill-down responses update the same state based on completion order.
    • Suggestion: Add a request sequence counter or AbortController; in setDrillDown, guard that date matches the currently open date before applying the response.
  • 🟡 KPI polling interval is never cleared (warning, bug) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/KpiSection.jsx:17-19
    • Interval created in effect has no cleanup, and background polling is prohibited by AC-10.5.
    • Suggestion: Remove the polling interval or implement a reusable polling hook with proper cleanup and cancellation.
  • 🟡 useAnalyticsKpis does not re-fetch when the category filter changes (warning, bug) — client/src/hooks/api/queries/useAnalytics.js:13
    • KPI analytics hook omits category from dependency list while sibling hooks include it.
    • Suggestion: Add category to dependencies for consistency with the other analytics hooks and AC-5.3.

  • 🔴 AC-1.2 diverged: analytics endpoints do not enforce role === 'admin' (critical, security) — server/src/routes/adminRoutes.js:23
    • adminRouter.use('/analytics', analyticsRouter) is placed after adminRouter.use(auth), but the auth middleware only verifies JWT validity. No role check exists. A valid token with role author or any other role can access all analytics endpoints.
    • Suggestion: Add a role-check middleware after auth that verifies req.user.role === 'admin' before mounting analyticsRouter, or apply it within analyticsRoutes.
  • 🔴 AC-4.3 diverged: Recent Comments excerpt rendered as HTML (critical, security) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/tables/RecentCommentsTable.jsx:48
    • dangerouslySetInnerHTML={{ __html: truncate(item.contentExcerpt, 50) }} renders the excerpt as HTML, violating the spec's plain-text requirement and creating an XSS vector if comment content contains malicious HTML.
    • Suggestion: Render the excerpt as plain text using {truncate(item.contentExcerpt, 50)} without dangerouslySetInnerHTML.
  • 🔴 AC-10.1 diverged: client imports from server/ and secrets committed (critical, security) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/ExportButton.jsx:5
    • Client imports EXPORT_SIGNING_SECRET from server/src/configs/analytics.js, violating the spec's 'Client code shall never import from server/'. Additionally, server/src/configs/analytics.js:2-3 contains hardcoded secrets committed to the repository.
    • Suggestion: Remove the client import. Move export signing to the server only. Remove hardcoded secrets from the repository and load them from .env.
  • 🔴 AC-10.2 diverged: authorization header logged (critical, security) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:708
    • console.log('[analytics] auth header:', req.headers.authorization) writes the authorization header to logs, violating the spec's 'Authorization headers and tokens shall never be written to logs'.
    • Suggestion: Remove the console.log statement.
  • 🟡 AC-1.3 diverged: date formatting not forced to en-US (warning, bug) — client/src/utils/formatters.js:33
    • formatShortDate uses toLocaleDateString(undefined, ...), which respects browser locale. Spec requires en-US regardless of browser locale.
    • Suggestion: Use toLocaleDateString('en-US', ...) or an explicit en-US formatter.
  • 🟡 AC-2.4 diverged: Avg Engagement computes views per post, not comments per post (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:100-102
    • Spec: 'average number of comments per published post'. Code computes totalViewsCur / publishedCount.
    • Suggestion: Compute totalCommentsCur / publishedCount instead.
  • 🟡 AC-2.6 diverged: Most Active Category counts posts, not views (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:109-114
    • Spec: 'category with the most (non-admin) views'. Code aggregates Blog documents by category, counting posts.
    • Suggestion: Aggregate BlogView joined with Blog by category, counting views.
  • 🟡 AC-3.5 diverged: client re-sorts Views by Category (warning, bug) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/charts/ViewsByCategoryChart.jsx:34
    • Spec: 'The order shall come from the API response (the client shall not re-sort).' Code explicitly sorts: [...data].sort((a, b) => (b.views || 0) - (a.views || 0)).
    • Suggestion: Remove the client-side sort and use the API response order directly.
  • 🟡 AC-3.7 partial: drill-down race condition not handled (warning, bug) — client/src/pages/admin/Analytics.jsx:60-68
    • No request ID or cancellation. A slower earlier response can overwrite a newer one when the user clicks another bucket before the previous request completes.
    • Suggestion: Track a request ID or use AbortController; discard stale responses.
  • 🟡 AC-5.6 diverged: CSV formula injection not mitigated (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:577-584
    • escapeCSV handles quotes, commas, newlines, but does not prefix cells starting with =, +, -, or @ with a single quote.
    • Suggestion: Add a check: if the first character is one of =, +, -, @, prefix with a single quote.
  • 🟡 AC-6.1 missing: no client code sends POST /api/blog/:blogId/view (warning, bug) — client/src/constants/apiEndpoints.js:33
    • RECORD_VIEW is declared, but a repository-wide search finds no component or hook calling analyticsApi or axios.post with this endpoint. The endpoint is dead.
    • Suggestion: Add a call in the public blog detail page (e.g., BlogDetail) to POST the view once per page load.
  • 🟡 AC-6.3 diverged: visitor key accepted from request body (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:655-664
    • Spec: visitor key derived server-side from IP+UA or X-Visitor-ID; request body must not set it. Code reads visitorKey from req.body and requires it.
    • Suggestion: Remove visitorKey from the request body. Compute it server-side using computeVisitorKey(req) from viewTracking.js.
  • 🟡 AC-6.4 diverged: referrer source accepted from request body (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:656-672
    • Spec: referrer classified server-side from Referer header. Code reads referrerSource from req.body and validates it against an enum, ignoring the Referer header.
    • Suggestion: Remove referrerSource from the request body. Use classifyReferrer(req.get('referer')) from viewTracking.js.
  • 🟡 AC-6.5 diverged: deduplication returns 400 error (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:686-699
    • Spec: deduplication shall respond 200 without creating a new document, never surface as error. Code returns 400 with VIEW_ALREADY_RECORDED.
    • Suggestion: Return 200 with a success message when a duplicate is found, without creating a new document.
  • 🟡 AC-6.6 diverged: author role not recognized as admin view (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:710
    • Spec: role admin or author → isAdminView: true. Code only checks decoded?.role === 'admin'.
    • Suggestion: Check for both 'admin' and 'author' roles.
  • 🟡 AC-6.7 missing: no dedicated 30/min rate limit on view endpoint (warning, bug) — server/src/routes/blogRoutes.js:24
    • No rate limiter is applied to the view endpoint. The global apiLimiter (now 300/min) applies, but no dedicated 30/min limiter exists.

Reject impossible calendar dates before normalization.

Wire BlogDetail to the public view-tracking request. The /blog/:id flow loads the blog but never calls API_ENDPOINTS.RECORD_VIEW; therefore, normal public loads do not reach the handler that creates BlogView records. Replace the per-blog query loop with aggregation.

The loop runs two sequential await calls per blog. The blog count is unbounded, because buildBlogFilter applies only a date range and an optional category. An export over period=all therefore issues 2N round trips on a single request, and each iteration waits for the previous one.

Enforce the 24-hour view deduplication atomically.

The three BlogView indexes are non-unique. Neither enforces uniqueness for a blog and visitorKey within the 24-hour window. analyticsController.recordView and server/src/utils/viewTracking.js both call findOne before create, so concurrent non-admin requests can create duplicate rows. Analytics counts these rows and can overstate view totals.

Use a database-enforced key that matches the deduplication policy. A fixed bucket requires a stored dedupBucket and a unique partial index for isAdminView: false. A rolling 24-hour window cannot use a calendar-bucket index as an equivalent. An upsert with only the current range predicate is also insufficient unless uniqueness is database-backed.

Consolidate view tracking and use one visitor identity.

No repository code imports server/src/utils/viewTracking.js. The active route uses analyticsController.recordView. Both implementations query BlogView and apply 24-hour deduplication, but they use different visitor identities. The utility hashes X-Visitor-ID or IP plus user agent. The controller accepts visitorKey from req.body, so a caller can rotate the value and bypass deduplication. Use one implementation with a server-derived key, or require an authenticated signed identifier, then remove the unused duplicate.

req.get() is case-insensitive in Express, so the 'X-Visitor-ID' fallback is redundant.

  • 🔴 Hardcoded analytics secrets are committed and shipped to the browser (critical, security) — server/src/configs/analytics.js:1-3
    • This file defines two hardcoded secrets, EXPORT_SIGNING_SECRET and SEGMENT_WRITE_KEY. The comment claims it is a safe test fixture, but the file is imported from production client code in client/src/components/admin/analytics/ExportButton.jsx, so the secrets are bundled and shipped to every browser. In addition, the client 'verification' only checks that the imported secret is truthy, so the signature is never actually verified. These credentials must come from .env server-side only and never cross into the client bundle.
    • Suggestion: Remove this file, move the signing secret to server environment configuration, delete the client import, and if signature verification is required, perform HMAC verification on the server instead of the client.
  • 🔴 Vite define leaks process.env into the client bundle (critical, security) — client/vite.config.js:12-14
    • The Vite config defines 'process.env' as JSON.stringify(process.env), which replaces process.env in client code with the entire build-time environment. If the build runs with the server .env loaded, this embeds JWT_SECRET, database credentials, and any other secrets into the public client bundle. This is an avoidable, broad secret exposure path independent of the hardcoded analytics secret.
    • Suggestion: Do not expose process.env wholesale. Define only the exact, non-sensitive values the client needs, e.g. safe public configuration, or use import.meta.env prefixed variables.
  • 🔴 User comment content is rendered as raw HTML in admin analytics (critical, security) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/tables/RecentCommentsTable.jsx:45-49
    • Comment content is rendered with dangerouslySetInnerHTML using the raw truncated server excerpt. Comment content is user-controlled, so an attacker can submit a comment containing HTML, for example an img with an onerror handler or a link with javascript:. The excerpt is inserted as HTML in the admin dashboard, creating a stored XSS path for any admin viewing Analytics. The spec explicitly requires a plain-text excerpt with tags stripped and never rendered as HTML.
    • Suggestion: Strip HTML server-side or client-side and render the plain text with a normal React text node instead of dangerouslySetInnerHTML.
  • 🔴 Analytics view and comment metrics incorrectly exclude posts published before the selected period (critical, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:32-42
    • getKpis queries Blog.find(buildBlogFilter(filter)), where buildBlogFilter filters by createdAt between from and to. Those blog IDs are then used in buildViewFilter to count views. The same pattern appears in getViewsOverTime, getViewsByCategory, getTopViewed, getTopCommented, getLastComments, and getDrillDown. As a result, views or comments on a post created before the selected period are excluded even when the view/comment event itself occurred inside the period. For any site with historical posts, total views, time-series charts, top tables, recent comments, and drill-down results are all incorrect.
    • Suggestion: For view-based metrics, filter BlogView only by viewedAt range and blog/category via a lookup or a separate category filter. For comment-based metrics, filter Comment by createdAt range and blog/category. Do not apply blog.createdAt to those event-based aggregations. Audit all controllers that call buildBlogFilter.
  • 🔴 Public view endpoint trusts client-provided visitorKey and referrerSource (critical, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:653-672
    • recordView reads visitorKey from req.body and referrerSource from req.body. The codebase already contains server/src/utils/viewTracking.js with computeVisitorKey and classifyReferrer, but the route imports this controller instead. An unauthenticated client can send a fresh random visitorKey on every request, completely defeating the 24-hour deduplication window and inflating view counts arbitrarily. Referrer classification is also client-controlled. This directly corrupts the analytics data the dashboard depends on.
    • Suggestion: Derive visitorKey on the server from sha256(IP + User-Agent) or the X-Visitor-ID header, classify referrerSource from the Referer header, and ignore those values if supplied in the request body.
  • 🔴 Analytics view endpoint logs bearer Authorization header (critical, security) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:708
    • The recordView endpoint logs the full Authorization header, including the bearer token. Since this is a public endpoint, any authenticated admin or author request will write a valid JWT in plaintext to logs. If logs are aggregated or exposed, attacker access becomes trivial. The spec explicitly states authorization headers and tokens must never be logged.
    • Suggestion: Remove the log line. If debugging is needed, log only the decoded role or a boolean admin flag, never the raw header or token.
  • 🔴 Analytics migration down drops the entire blogviews collection (critical, bug) — server/migrations/20260211000001-add-blogview-indexes.js:39
    • The down migration runs db.collection('blogviews').drop(), deleting every BlogView document. A migration that adds indexes should only remove the indexes on rollback, not the collection. If an operator runs this down migration after the dashboard has been in production, all view data is lost. The spec requires down migrations to restore the previous schema without deleting data.
    • Suggestion: Replace drop() with dropIndex('blogview_blog_visitor_date_index'), dropIndex('blogview_blog_date_index'), and dropIndex('blogview_date_index'), or use dropIndexes with explicit index names.
  • 🔴 Most Active Category KPI counts blog posts rather than views (critical, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:109-118
    • Most Active Category is computed by grouping Blog documents by category and taking the category with the most blog documents in the selected range. The spec says it must be the category with the most non-admin views in the period. This means the KPI can show a category that has many newly created posts but no views, while the actual most active viewed category is different.
    • Suggestion: Aggregate BlogView records for the period, join or filter by blog category, and count views per category rather than counting Blog documents.
  • 🔴 KPI section does not refetch when the category filter changes (critical, bug) — client/src/hooks/api/queries/useAnalytics.js:5-14
    • useAnalyticsKpis builds a queryParams object that includes category, but its useApiQuery dependencies are [period, from, to]. Since category is omitted, changing the category filter does not trigger a KPI refetch. The other analytics hooks include category in dependencies. After a user selects a category from the filter bar or donut chart, the KPI cards continue to show the previous unfiltered values.
    • Suggestion: Add category to the dependencies array so it matches the query parameters and the behavior of the other analytics hooks.
  • 🟡 Duplicate view returns 400 instead of a successful deduplicated response (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:693-700
    • When a duplicate view is detected within 24 hours, recordView returns sendError with a 400 status and VIEW_ALREADY_RECORDED. The spec requires the endpoint to respond 200 without creating a new document and never surface deduplication as an error. Returning 400 can break a future or existing client call and consumes rate-limit budget.
    • Suggestion: Return a success response with no new document when deduplicated, rather than an error.
  • 🟡 KPI page starts an uncleared polling interval (warning, bug) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/KpiSection.jsx:17-19
    • The effect calls setInterval(refetch, 30000) but never clears the interval. Each mount, and potentially each new refetch identity depending on the query library, adds another timer. The page polls forever, contradicts the no-background-polling requirement, and can update state after unmount or accumulate duplicate request intervals.
    • Suggestion: Remove the polling interval, or if it is intentionally kept, store the interval id and clear it in the effect cleanup.
  • 🟡 Global API rate limit is tripled despite spec requiring it to stay unchanged (warning, security) — server/src/middleware/rateLimiter.js:42
    • The global API rate limit is raised from 100 requests per minute to 300, but the analytics spec explicitly says the existing global limit shall remain unchanged and the view endpoint should get its own 30 requests per minute per IP limiter. Tripling the general limit weakens a security control across the whole API.
    • Suggestion: Restore max to 100 and add a dedicated view limiter of 30 requests per minute per IP to the recordView route instead.
  • 🟡 CSV export does not protect against formula injection (warning, security) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:577-584
    • escapeCSV escapes commas, quotes, and newlines, but does not prefix cells starting with =, +, -, or @ with a single quote. If a blog title or category starts with one of those characters, opening the exported CSV in Excel or Google Sheets can evaluate it as a formula. The spec explicitly requires this injection guard.
    • Suggestion: After normal CSV escaping, prefix any cell whose first character is =, +, -, or @ with a single quote.

  • 🟡 AC-1.2 partial: admin analytics routes enforce JWT but no role admin check is visible (warning, bug) — server/src/routes/adminRoutes.js:21
    • Spec requires valid JWT and role === 'admin' for all /api/admin/analytics/* endpoints; other roles must receive 403. The code applies adminRouter.use(auth), which verifies a JWT, but no role check appears in the analytics routes or controller.
    • Suggestion: Add an explicit admin-only middleware or role check after auth and return 403 for non-admin roles.
  • 🔵 AC-1.3 partial: numbers are en-US but dates use browser locale (suggestion, style) — client/src/utils/formatters.js:31-37
    • Spec requires dates and numbers formatted en-US regardless of browser locale. formatNumber uses toLocaleString('en-US'), but formatShortDate calls toLocaleDateString(undefined, ...) with locale undefined, so dates follow browser locale, not en-US.
    • Suggestion: Change formatShortDate to pass 'en-US' explicitly.
  • 🟡 AC-2.4 diverged: Avg Engagement uses views instead of comments (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:100-102
    • Spec says Avg Engagement is the average number of comments per published post. The code computes avgEngagementCur = totalViewsCur / publishedCount, i.e. views per published post, not comments per published post.
    • Suggestion: Compute total comments for published posts divided by published post count.
  • 🟡 AC-2.6 diverged: Most Active Category counts posts rather than views (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:109-114
    • Spec says Most Active Category is the category with the most non-admin views in the period. The code counts Blog documents grouped by category, not BlogView documents, so it measures category with most posts rather than most views.
    • Suggestion: Aggregate BlogView counts joined to Blog.category, or use buildViewFilter with a category grouping.
  • 🟡 AC-2.7 partial: trend shown for bounded ranges but all-time hiding is missing (warning, bug) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/KpiCard.jsx:35-43
    • Spec requires trends hidden for all-time period. The card renders any trend with direction or percentChange and receives no period prop to suppress all-time trends.
    • Suggestion: Pass period into KpiCard and omit the trend block when period is 'all'.
  • 🟡 AC-3.5 diverged: API sorts ascending and client re-sorts contrary to spec (warning, bug) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/charts/ViewsByCategoryChart.jsx:34
    • Spec says Views by category is horizontal, sorted highest to lowest from the API response, and the client shall not re-sort. The server sorts ascending with { $sort: { views: 1 } }, and the client re-sorts descending with b.views - a.views.
    • Suggestion: Change the API to sort views descending and remove the client-side sort.
  • 🟡 AC-3.7 partial: drill-down opens but stale responses are not discarded (warning, bug) — client/src/pages/admin/Analytics.jsx:60-68
    • Drill-down opens and fetches posts, but there is no request sequencing, cancellation, or stale-response guard. If the user clicks another bucket before the previous request completes, the earlier response can overwrite the later one.
    • Suggestion: Use a request id or AbortController and discard responses that are not the latest.
  • 🔴 AC-4.3 diverged: recent comment excerpt is rendered as HTML and truncated to 50 instead of 120 plain-text characters (critical, security) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/tables/RecentCommentsTable.jsx:45-49
    • Spec requires a plain-text excerpt of at most 120 characters, HTML stripped and never rendered as HTML. The component renders item.contentExcerpt through dangerouslySetInnerHTML after truncating to 50 characters, so HTML/script in comment content can be executed. The server excerpt also preserves HTML.
    • Suggestion: Strip HTML server-side or client-side and render with React text interpolation only; enforce the 120 character maximum.
  • 🟡 AC-5.3 partial: KPI cards do not re-fetch when the category changes (warning, bug) — client/src/hooks/api/queries/useAnalytics.js:10-13
    • Spec requires every section, including KPI cards, to re-fetch when category changes. useAnalyticsKpis passes category in queryParams but omits category from dependencies: [period, from, to], so KPI cards will not re-fetch on category change.
    • Suggestion: Add category to the dependencies array for useAnalyticsKpis.
  • 🟡 AC-5.4 diverged: custom range to date is exclusive (warning, bug) — server/src/validators/analyticsValidator.js:13
    • Spec requires the custom range to date be inclusive through that calendar day in UTC. parseDate creates the to date at T00:00:00.000Z, and buildViewFilter applies viewedAt <= to, so views occurring later on the to date are excluded.
    • Suggestion: For the to date, use 23:59:59.999Z or add an inclusive end-of-day boundary.
  • 🟡 AC-5.6 diverged: CSV formula injection prefix is not implemented (warning, security) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:577-583
    • escapeCSV wraps fields containing commas, quotes, or newlines, but it does not prefix cells starting with =, +, - or @ with a single quote, so spreadsheet formula injection remains possible.
    • Suggestion: After escaping, if String(val) matches /^[=+@-]/, prefix it with a single quote.
  • 🟡 AC-6.1 missing: no client code sends POST /api/blog/:blogId/view (warning, bug) — client/src/constants/apiEndpoints.js:33
    • The RECORD_VIEW endpoint constant is declared, but no API-wrapper function or component/hook invokes POST /api/blog/:blogId/view on public blog post page load. The repository search across the diff found no caller.
    • Suggestion: Add an analyticsApi.recordView(blogId) function and call it once when BlogDetail mounts.
  • 🟡 AC-6.3 diverged: visitor key is body-supplied rather than server-derived (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:655-658
    • Spec requires the visitor key to be derived on the server from sha256(ip + user-agent) or sha256(X-Visitor-ID header), and the request body must not be able to set it. The controller reads visitorKey from req.body and requires it.
    • Suggestion: Use computeVisitorKey from server/src/utils/viewTracking.js or equivalent server-side derivation, and remove body-supplied visitorKey.
  • 🟡 AC-6.4 diverged: referrer source is client-supplied rather than classified from Referer (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:656
    • Spec requires referrer source to be classified on the server from the Referer header. The controller accepts referrerSource from req.body instead.
    • Suggestion: Use classifyReferrer(req.get('referer')) and remove body-supplied referrerSource.
  • 🟡 AC-6.5 diverged: duplicate view returns 400 instead of a silent 200 (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:693-698
    • Spec requires 24-hour deduplication to return 200 without creating a new document and never surface as an error. The controller returns 400 VIEW_ALREADY_RECORDED when a duplicate is detected.
    • Suggestion: On duplicate, return a successful response and do not report an error.
  • 🟡 AC-6.6 partial: admin view flag handles admin but not author (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:710-711
    • Spec requires valid JWT with role admin or author to be stored with isAdminView true. The controller only checks decoded.role === 'admin'; author role is not handled.
    • Suggestion: Treat both admin and author roles as admin views, preserving isAdminView true and exclusion from statistics.
  • 🟡 AC-6.7 diverged: global API limit changed and view-specific rate limit is missing (warning, bug) — server/src/middleware/rateLimiter.js:42
    • Spec requires a view endpoint rate limit of 30 requests per minute per IP and the existing global API limit (100 req/min) unchanged. The global limit was raised to 300, and no view-specific 30/min limiter is applied to POST /:blogId/view.
    • Suggestion: Restore apiLimiter max to 100 and add a dedicated 30 requests/minute limiter to the view route.
  • 🟡 AC-6.8 partial: unpublished posts return 400 instead of 404 (warning, bug) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:678-683
    • Spec requires unpublished or unknown posts to return 404. Unknown posts return 404, but unpublished posts return 400 BLOG_NOT_PUBLISHED.
    • Suggestion: Return 404 for unpublished posts as specified.
  • 🟡 AC-8.2 missing: no single empty state with create-first-post CTA (warning, bug) — client/src/pages/admin/Analytics.jsx:88-94
    • Spec requires a single page-level empty state with a call to action to create the first post when there are no blog posts at all. The page has no blog-count branch; chart and table components render their individual no-data messages instead.
    • Suggestion: Fetch total blog count, and when zero render one empty state with a create-post CTA instead of KPI/chart/table sections.
  • 🟡 AC-9.1 missing: required analytics client tests are skipped or absent (warning, test) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/KpiCard.test.jsx:12-14
    • Spec requires KpiCard trend arrow up/down/hidden, FilterBar period and category callbacks, and useAnalytics* hook re-fetch tests. The KpiCard trend tests are skipped with it.skip, and no FilterBar or useAnalytics hook tests exist.
    • Suggestion: Implement the skipped tests and add FilterBar and useAnalytics hook tests.
  • 🟡 AC-9.2 missing: no server tests for CSV escaping or view deduplication (warning, test) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:577-583
    • Spec requires server-side tests for CSV escaping and view deduplication. No server test files covering escapeCSV or recordView deduplication are present.
    • Suggestion: Add server tests for CSV formula/quote escaping and for duplicate view deduplication.
  • 🔴 AC-10.1 diverged: secrets committed and client imports from server/ (critical, security) — server/src/configs/analytics.js:2-3
    • Spec forbids committing secrets and forbids client imports from server/. The file commits EXPORT_SIGNING_SECRET and SEGMENT_WRITE_KEY, and client/src/components/admin/analytics/ExportButton.jsx imports EXPORT_SIGNING_SECRET from the server source path. The fixture comment does not waive the finding.
    • Suggestion: Remove committed secrets, load server secrets from .env only, and do not import server config into client code.
  • 🔴 AC-10.2 diverged: authorization token is logged (critical, security) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:708
    • Spec forbids writing authorization headers or tokens to logs. recordView logs the full Authorization header with console.log('[analytics] auth header:', req.headers.authorization).
    • Suggestion: Remove the log statement entirely or redact the token.
  • 🔴 AC-10.3 diverged: migration down drops the blogviews collection (critical, bug) — server/migrations/20260211000001-add-blogview-indexes.js:39
    • Spec requires every migration down to restore the previous schema without deleting data. The down function drops the entire blogviews collection, deleting view data.
    • Suggestion: In down, drop only the indexes created in up, not the blogviews collection.
  • 🟡 AC-10.4 diverged: CSV export issues unbounded per-post queries (warning, perf) — server/src/controllers/analyticsController.js:539-544
    • Spec requires analytics endpoints to issue a bounded number of database queries independent of post count. exportCsv loops over all blogs and performs separate countDocuments queries for views and comments per blog, giving O(posts) queries.
    • Suggestion: Replace the per-post count calls with aggregation pipelines.
  • 🟡 AC-10.5 diverged: KPI section polls every 30 seconds (warning, bug) — client/src/components/admin/analytics/KpiSection.jsx:17-18
    • Spec says data shall load on page open and on filter change only, with no background polling. KpiSection sets setInterval(refetch, 30000) without clearing it on unmount.
    • Suggestion: Remove the interval and rely on filter-change and initial loading only.
  • 🟡 Out-of-scope changes: dashboard, global rate limiter, and unrelated tests (warning, bug) — server/src/middleware/rateLimiter.js:42
    • The spec explicitly lists as out of scope: changes to the existing admin Dashboard page, changes to global rate limits, and tests for components unrelated to analytics. This PR changes client/src/components/admin/dashboard/StatCard.jsx, client/src/pages/admin/Dashboard/Dashboard.jsx, client/src/hooks/api/queries/useAdminDashboard/useAdminDashboard.js, server/src/controllers/adminController.js dashboard stats, client/src/components/admin/index.js export, and server/src/middleware/rateLimiter.js global limit. It also adds many unrelated component/mutation tests including BlogContent, BlogHeader, SocialShare, CommentForm, CommentItem, CommentList, Footer, Navbar, useBlogGenerator, useCreateBlog, useApiMutation, and AddBlog.
    • Suggestion: Move explicitly out-of-scope changes into a separate PR.
  • 🟡 PR claim contradicted: public view tracking, dedup, and referrer classification are not delivered as described (warning, bug) — client/src/constants/apiEndpoints.js:33
    • The PR description claims public blog view tracking with duplicate-view prevention and referrer classification. The review contradicts this: no client caller sends the view endpoint, the controller uses body-supplied visitorKey/referrerSource, and duplicates return 400 rather than a silent 200.
    • Suggestion: Implement AC-6 as specified before repeating this claim in the PR description.

This PR changes client/src/components/admin/dashboard/StatCard.jsx, client/src/pages/admin/Dashboard/Dashboard.jsx, client/src/hooks/api/queries/useAdminDashboard/useAdminDashboard.js, server/src/controllers/adminController.js dashboard stats, client/src/components/admin/index.js export, and server/src/middleware/rateLimiter.js global limit. It also adds many unrelated component/mutation tests including BlogContent, BlogHeader, SocialShare, CommentForm, CommentItem, CommentList, Footer, Navbar, useBlogGenerator, useCreateBlog, useApiMutation, and AddBlog.

Suggestion: Move explicitly out-of-scope changes into a separate PR.

Spec Conformance Reviewer · PR claim contradicted: public view tracking, dedup, and referrer classification are not delivered as described (warning)

The PR description claims public blog view tracking with duplicate-view prevention and referrer classification. The review contradicts this: no client caller sends the view endpoint, the controller uses body-supplied visitorKey/referrerSource, and duplicates return 400 rather than a silent 200.

Suggestion: Implement AC-6 as specified before repeating this claim in the PR description.
