Summary

  • Install react-hook-form and migrate all 4 forms (Login, CommentForm, NewsletterForm, AddBlog) from manual useState-per-field to RHF useForm/register
  • Update Input and Textarea UI components to forward ref for RHF compatibility (React 19 ref-as-prop)
  • Use Controller only for file input (AddBlog image upload); register everywhere else
  • Use RHF's built-in validation + existing validators.js — no schema library needed
  • Add co-located tests for all 4 migrated forms (Login, CommentForm, NewsletterForm, AddBlog)

Test plan

  • All 60 tests pass (npm test in client/)
  • Production build succeeds (npm run build)
  • Manual smoke test: Login flow
  • Manual smoke test: Create blog post with image + AI generation
  • Manual smoke test: Submit comment
  • Manual smoke test: Newsletter subscribe

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Form Improvements
    • Login, comment, newsletter, and blog forms now use consistent required-field validation and submission handling.
    • Comment and blog forms clear after successful submission; comment entries remain available if submission fails.
    • Newsletter submissions show success or validation-error messages, and the email field clears after success.
    • Blog creation provides clearer field validation and keeps the image preview and publishing controls synchronized with the form.
  • Testing
    • Added coverage for newsletter and blog form behavior, with updated tests for login and comment forms.

Replace manual useState-per-field form management with react-hook-form
across Login, CommentForm, NewsletterForm, and AddBlog. Update Input
and Textarea components to forward ref for RHF register compatibility.
Add co-located tests for all migrated forms.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Client login, comment, newsletter, and blog forms now use react-hook-form for form state and submission. The change adds required-field and email validation, form reset behavior, and ref forwarding in shared input components. Tests and Vite test configuration are also updated.

Changes

Client Form State Migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Form dependencies and shared support
client/package.json, client/src/components/ui/Input/Input.jsx, client/src/components/ui/Textarea/Textarea.jsx, client/src/test/setup.js, client/vite.config.js
Adds react-hook-form, forwards refs from shared controls to native elements, and configures the Vitest environment and setup file.
Admin login form
client/src/components/admin/auth/Login/Login.jsx, client/src/components/admin/auth/Login/Login.test.jsx
Registers required email and password fields and submits their values through the login flow. Tests mock the login API and check submitted credentials, token handling, and the error toast.
Comment form submission and reset
client/src/components/comment/CommentForm/CommentForm.jsx, client/src/components/comment/CommentForm/CommentForm.test.jsx
Registers required comment fields and resets them after successful submission. Tests check rendered fields, submitted values, and field retention after an unsuccessful result.
Newsletter validation and submission
client/src/components/forms/NewsletterForm/NewsletterForm.jsx, client/src/components/forms/NewsletterForm/NewsletterForm.test.jsx
Registers the email field with required and email validation, and handles validation errors and delayed success behavior. Tests cover validation feedback, success notification, and field reset.
Admin blog form validation and submission
client/src/pages/admin/AddBlog/AddBlog.jsx, client/src/pages/admin/AddBlog/AddBlog.test.jsx
Moves blog fields into form state, validates required values and the image file, and resets the form and editor after success. Tests cover form rendering, category options, empty-title feedback, and the AI-generation button.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bab9e

Blog creation can fail when an administrator tries to upload the same image again after a successful post. Repeated edits while an image is selected also retain unreleased preview URLs. Address both AddBlog issues before merging; the other migrated forms show no blocking issues.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to bab9e

The examined submission paths retain their existing authorization boundaries and destinations. Risk is limited to client-side validation and lifecycle compatibility; concurrent completion and browser file-reset behavior remain incompletely assessed.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The examined exposure remains within existing login, public-comment, and authenticated blog-creation flows. Ref forwarding grants access to browser controls but does not itself grant additional server authority. The capped dependency map does not establish exhaustive coverage of other consumers.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Blog creation remains behind server authentication, upload processing, and input validation. Persisted author identity comes from req.user rather than registered form fields. Public comment submission retains server rate limiting and validation.
  • observed — The login boundary probe found unchanged server rate limiting, active-user lookup, password comparison, and token issuance after credential verification. These controls, rather than client required-field rules, remain the authentication enforcement point.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Comment and blog forms reset only after successful results, preserving entered data on reported rejection. Loading disables shared submit buttons where supplied, but this is not an atomic exclusion or request-identity guarantee.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Clear the native file input after a successful submission.

The Controller receives a selected File, but its render function passes only onChange to the native input. After reset(), the preview returns to its placeholder while the native input can still hold the previous selection. Selecting that same file again may produce no change event, leaving image null and blocking the next submission. Keep a ref to the native input and clear its value when the form resets. React Hook Form documents that file inputs require application-level management. (github.com)

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Create and revoke the image preview URL outside render.

When an image is selected, each title edit renders this expression again and creates another object URL. The component never revokes the earlier URLs, so repeated edits retain references to the selected file until the document unloads. Create the URL when image changes and revoke it on change or unmount. (developer.mozilla.org)

As per coding guidelines, “Components must be pure — same inputs = same outputs” and “Side effects in useEffect only, never during render.”

Assert the title validation message.

This test leaves the subtitle and image empty as well as the title. Any validation error can satisfy toHaveBeenCalled(), even if title validation stops working. Assert that the toast receives Please enter a blog title.

  • 🟡 Whitespace-only title/subTitle now passes RHF required validation (warning, bug) — client/src/pages/admin/AddBlog/AddBlog.jsx:120-129
    • The old form rejected whitespace-only blog title and subtitle via !title || !title.trim() and !subTitle || !subTitle.trim(). The new RHF rules only use required, which treats whitespace-only strings as present, so a user can submit ' ' and bypass validation.
    • Suggestion: Add a validate rule to both title and subTitle such as (v) => v.trim() !== '' || 'Please enter a valid blog title' / ...sub title, or otherwise trim before submitting.
  • 🔵 Login form keeps native validation path, so RHF required rules never run (suggestion, bug) — client/src/components/admin/auth/Login/Login.jsx:45-62
    • The form has no noValidate, and the Input components still receive native required. As a result, browsers block invalid submits before React's onSubmit runs, so the new RHF register(..., { required: true }) validation is effectively dead code. Current behavior is preserved by native validation, but a future developer adding RHF errors UI could be misled. The same pattern applies to CommentForm.jsx lines 21-34.
    • Suggestion: Either add noValidate and explicitly handle RHF errors, or remove the redundant RHF required rules to make the intended validation path clear.
