Problem

The il2cpp-linemap upload of an Android build carried no MethodMap.tsv, so mangled managed names could not be demangled (UNITYTA-19). Without --emit-source-mapping there was no LineNumberMappings.json either.

Root cause

IL2CPP writes Symbols/LineNumberMappings.json only with --emit-source-mapping and Symbols/MethodMap.tsv only with --emit-method-map (Unity itself adds the first on 2022.3/6000 only when Cloud Diagnostics crash reporting is on). The package never passed either argument; the sample project set only --emit-source-mapping, which hid the gap.
Evidence:

  • both options exist in the il2cpp of 2021.3.45f1, 2022.3.62f3 and 6000.0.84f1 (EmitSourceMapping, EmitMethodMap in Unity.IL2CPP.dll);
  • 2022.3.62f3 build with only --emit-source-mapping: Symbols/ has LineNumberMappings.json + il2cppFileRoot.txt, the upload logs has_method_map=false; adding --emit-method-map produced a 24,568-line MethodMap.tsv and has_method_map=true;
  • bugsee-cli already packs a sibling MethodMap.tsv (dry run), so the upload code needed no change.

Fix

Editor/BugseeIl2CppMappingArgs.cs adds --emit-source-mapping --emit-method-map to the Additional IL2CPP Arguments for Android/iOS/tvOS IL2CPP builds when the il2cpp-linemap upload is on (app token set, BUGSEE_NO_IL2CPP_MAPPING unset, no explicit BUGSEE_IL2CPP_MAPPING file), and restores Player Settings afterwards. The restore also runs after a failed or cancelled build (one-shot editor update handler; the post-build callback is skipped when the pipeline aborts), with the saved state in Library/Bugsee. A string you edited meanwhile is kept and logged. Policy is in Runtime/WrapperPolicy (Il2CppMappingArgs, Il2CppArgsRestorePolicy) with tests. Stale guidance in docs, the linemap warning and the sample's E2EBuild is updated.

Verification

  • Policy tests 921 pass; compile-check passes all configurations (stubs added for PlayerSettings.Get/SetAdditionalIl2CppArgs).
  • Real Android IL2CPP release builds, token set, no manual IL2CPP args, on the head of this branch: 2022.3.62f3 and 2021.3.45f1. Both: args added then restored (ProjectSettings.asset clean, Library/Bugsee/il2cpp-args-restore.json gone), MethodMap.tsv and LineNumberMappings.json produced, uploaded with has_method_map=true (2021.3 writes no il2cppFileRoot.txt, which is optional).
  • Forced build failure on 2022.3.62f3 (throwing pre-build hook): the post-build callback is skipped and the flags stay set, then the one-shot handler restores them once the editor updates.

Limitations

  • A batchmode run that exits straight after a failed build (e.g. -quit, EditorApplication.Exit(1)) leaves the flags in ProjectSettings.asset until the next editor session restores them from Library/Bugsee.
  • iOS/tvOS not built (same code path; iOS has no Mono backend).
  • Worker-side demangling of this archive is verified separately in worker PR #105; the MethodMap has three columns (mangled, C# signature, assembly).
  • Adding or removing the token changes the arguments and makes IL2CPP regenerate its cache once.

IL2CPP writes neither file unless asked. The args are added for the build when the linemap upload is on and restored afterwards.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Eligible Android, iOS, and tvOS IL2CPP builds now generate source mappings and method maps for upload when an app token is set.
    • Build arguments are restored afterward, including after a failed build. Any changes made to those arguments during the build are preserved.
    • BUGSEE_NO_IL2CPP_MAPPING disables generation and upload; BUGSEE_IL2CPP_MAPPING lets you provide a mapping file without changing Player Settings.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the artifact list and build guidance to describe the generated files and available options.

The package adds --emit-source-mapping and --emit-method-map to eligible IL2CPP builds when mapping generation is enabled. It saves the previous arguments and restores them after the build when the current setting still matches the value applied by the package. Pending restoration can also be resolved on a later editor update or startup. The documentation and warning text describe the generated files and environment-variable controls.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to bbdcd

Mapping setup may disrupt a build if its restore file cannot be written, and a failed restoration can leave added arguments in project settings. These are bounded failure cases, but both should be addressed before relying on automatic restoration.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to bbdcd

The change is limited to eligible Unity builds and retains the existing upload controls. A restoration failure can nevertheless discard the saved original settings and leave mapping-generation arguments enabled for later builds. No new remote attack path was established, but recovery behavior needs attention.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Failed restoration can destroy its own recovery record. ResolvePending catches read or settings-restoration exceptions, then clears the session marker and attempts to delete the pending file. If deletion succeeds while the augmented arguments remain applied, startup recovery cannot recover the saved original value, and later builds can retain the package-added flags. The equality guard protects intentional user edits but does not protect this exception path.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The introduced mutable-state exposure is the current Unity project's shared IL2CPP argument setting and subsequent builds using that setting. A failed rollback can leave mapping generation enabled even when a later build would not qualify for automatic augmentation; the uploader's separate controls still apply.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing upload path passes arguments without shell execution and supplies the configured app token and endpoint through the child environment. This PR does not change that runner or the uploader's execution logic; its uploader edit is warning text. Automatic metadata generation therefore feeds an existing credential-bearing integration rather than introducing a new execution authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Argument augmentation preserves existing arguments and avoids appending recognized duplicate flags. Restoration uses exact equality to avoid overwriting an intervening user edit. These controls address ordinary repetition and ownership, but do not retain recovery state after caught restoration failures.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Retain the pending record after restoration errors and clear it only after successful restoration or an explicit changed-setting decision. Provide a recoverable failure state instead of treating an exception as completed cleanup.

Keep the mapping-argument setup non-blocking.

OnPreprocessBuild calls Directory.CreateDirectory, File.WriteAllText and PlayerSettings.SetAdditionalIl2CppArgs without a guard. In Unity, an exception thrown from IPreprocessBuildWithReport stops the build. A trigger is a Library/Bugsee path that cannot be written, for example because of permissions or a locked file. In that case an optional symbol feature fails the player build. Put the setup in a try/catch block. On failure, log a warning and continue without the arguments.

The repository guideline says: "Keep optional symbol uploads opt-in and non-blocking ... rather than failing the Unity build." This rule is for Editor/Bugsee*Upload.cs. The same principle applies to this file.

Keep the pending restore when SetAdditionalIl2CppArgs fails.

ResolvePending catches a restoration exception, then deletes PendingPath. The applied flags can remain in Player Settings, and the editor-startup retry cannot run because the pending file is gone. The update handler is also removed before this call. Preserve the pending record when deserialization succeeded so a later editor session can retry.
