Problem

With Android Minify (R8) enabled, the SDK failed to launch on every Unity version: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.bugsee.unity.UnityWrapper. Unity does not read Plugins/Android/bugsee-unity-wrapper.proguard from a package, and the SDK's own consumer rules cover com.bugsee.library.** only, so R8 stripped the wrapper classes that C# looks up by name over JNI.

Change

  • Editor/BugseeAndroidProguardRules.cs (IPostGenerateGradleAndroidProject) appends the rules to the generated unityLibrary/proguard-unity.txt, which Unity already lists as the library's consumerProguardFiles. No Player Settings change and no Custom Proguard File needed; works on 2021.3, 2022.3 and 6000. Never fails the build (warnings only).
  • Runtime/WrapperPolicy/ProguardRules.cs: marker-delimited, idempotent block (replaced, not duplicated; an unterminated block is replaced to end of file; LF/CRLF kept).
  • Rules: UnityManagedException constructor now kept (built by name from C#); UnityWrapperIdentity kept defensively; the six AndroidJavaProxy interfaces kept explicitly. The rationale comments say which classes are looked up by name and which are kept defensively.
  • BugseeAndroidWrapperManifest logs warnings instead of errors (a logged error counts as a failed build in batchmode).
  • Tests: Tests~/WrapperPolicy/ProguardRulesTests.cs (injection/idempotence, and fails when a class C# names over JNI, a wrapper method it calls, or a proxied interface has no rule) and a JUnit KeepRulesTests that resolves every static signature in the rules on UnityWrapper reflectively.

Verification

  • Reproduced on 2022.3.62f3 (IL2CPP arm64 release, Minify on, emulator): ClassNotFoundException at launch.
  • With the fix, Minify-on release builds on 2021.3.45f1, 2022.3.62f3 and 6000.0.84f1: block present in the generated proguard-unity.txt, SDK launches, Java crash, native crash and unhandled managed exception arrive on staging (UNITYTA-56/59 Java with the mapping applied, UNITYTA-62 native symbolicated, UNITYTA-58 managed). Unity 6 was built on a local merge of the Unity 6 Gradle branch before Use Unity's own Gradle templates so Android builds work on Unity 6 #80 landed.
  • WrapperPolicy tests 919/919, Android JVM tests pass, compile-check ok.

Docs reconciliation

PR #83 (merged) told users to copy the rules into proguard-user.txt and that they did not cover UnityManagedException. That paragraph is rewritten here: the package now applies the rules itself.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Android builds now automatically add the package’s R8 keep rules, helping preserve JNI-accessed wrapper and SDK classes when minification is enabled.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Android wrapper registration issues are now reported as warnings instead of errors.
  • Documentation
    • Updated Android setup guidance to explain automatic R8 rule application.
  • Tests
    • Added checks that required JNI keep rules match the wrapper methods, constructors, and interfaces they protect.

Adds JNI keep rules for Android R8 and a policy that inserts or replaces a marked block in generated unityLibrary/proguard-unity.txt. An Android post-generation callback applies the package rules and writes the file only when its content changes. Missing files and processing failures produce warnings. Tests check rule application, JNI keep-rule coverage, and build-step wiring. Documentation describes the generated rules and Android Minify settings.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c074f

The change applies the JNI keep rules to Android Minify builds, replaces the managed block on repeat builds, and warns instead of failing. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c074f

The change restores required JNI classes in minified Android builds without adding a remote entrypoint. The main design concern is that provider-registration failures now permit builds with incomplete early wrapper initialization. A privacy leak was not established, but recovery behavior without the provider remains partly unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Provider-registration failures now warn rather than log errors, weakening the build-time containment of incomplete early wrapper initialization. Under the stated batch-mode behavior, an application can now be produced without the provider that installs the wrapper before managed startup. Later managed registration limits the impact but cannot recover already missed early lifecycle events. This is a failure-containment concern, not a verified privacy leak.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly supported scope is each generated Android project consuming this package and the applications produced from it. A failed or interrupted overwrite can affect the shared R8 configuration, not only the package-owned block. No cross-service or tenant authority expansion is established by this path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new write path uses the Unity-supplied project path and a package-resolved template, under editor filesystem authority. The inspected flow does not receive remote request data. Keep rules preserve JNI symbols; they do not grant Android permissions or export the provider.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Normal managed launch calls EnsureWrapperRegistered, which invokes refineContext and installs the wrapper, providing a later recovery path when provider registration is absent. This does not reconstruct lifecycle events emitted before installation. The later path predates this PR.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider committing generated configuration through a validated temporary file and supported atomic replacement, preserving the previous file on failure. An opt-in release validation gate could also check that required keep rules and the provider entry reached the final build configuration.

Comment thread Runtime/WrapperPolicy/ProguardRules.cs Outdated
…ass reached over JNI.

Unity does not read Plugins/Android/bugsee-unity-wrapper.proguard from a package, so with Minify enabled R8 stripped UnityWrapper and UnityManagedException and the SDK failed to launch (ClassNotFoundException). BugseeAndroidProguardRules appends the rules to the generated unityLibrary/proguard-unity.txt (consumer rules) between markers, idempotently. The rules also keep UnityManagedException, UnityWrapperIdentity and the AndroidJavaProxy interfaces; tests fail when a class C# names over JNI has no rule.
