From the 2026-10-07 public-repo review (bugsee-rust). Public repos are MIT.

  • Licence: workspace license = "Proprietary" → "MIT", matching LICENSE; cargo metadata shows MIT for all 9 crates. Two lines in docs/design/out-of-process-monitor.md that called the repo proprietary are updated.
  • README: new README.md (pre-release status, quick start, crate table, docs links, dev commands, licence). The quick-start snippet was compile-checked against the facade (cargo check).
  • Internal names: PROGRESS.md no longer names apidev.bugsee.com or the private bugsee/report-bundle-structure repo (now bugsee/specs, sdk/reporting/); DESIGN.md reference updated likewise.

Not changed (please decide)

  • tests/integration/deployment_e2e.py, tests/integration/README.md and crates/bugsee/tests/http_transport.rs still mention apidev.bugsee.com (default endpoint / comments). Changing a default endpoint is a behaviour change, so I left it.
  • Source comments cite report-bundle-structure §x; the section numbers are from that spec, so I left them.
  • Issue macOS: the crash handler pulls in a private libproc symbol (Mac App Store risk) #15 (private macOS API, Mac App Store risk) is closed; crate names are still unclaimed on crates.io.

…m PROGRESS.md

- workspace license 'Proprietary' -> 'MIT' (matches LICENSE; all 9 crates inherit it)
- add README.md (quick start verified to compile, crates, status, licence)
- PROGRESS.md/DESIGN.md: replace the internal host apidev.bugsee.com and the
  old private repo name report-bundle-structure with bugsee/specs
- docs/design: the two lines that described the repo as proprietary

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a README with an SDK overview, quick-start guidance, crate descriptions, development commands, and links to project documentation.
    • Updated deployment and wire-contract references across project documentation.
    • Updated licensing information to reflect the MIT license.

The workspace package license changes from Proprietary to MIT. The repository gains a README with an SDK overview, quick start, and development instructions. Design and progress documentation updates the wire-contract reference to bugsee/specs (sdk/reporting/). Progress documentation also changes deployment references from staging hosts to live Bugsee deployments.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 76fb9

The README identifies Rust 1.88, but the current design rules still direct developers to unsupported Rust 1.86, which can make workspace builds fail. Align the design guidance before merging.

### Architecture Summary

Architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 76fb9

The change affects 5 systems.

Changed systems: Cargo.toml, DESIGN.md, docs, PROGRESS.md, README.md

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in Cargo.toml: The workspace package license changed from Proprietary to MIT.
  • observed — Modified behavior in DESIGN.md: The authoritative wire-contract reference changes from the report-bundle-structure GitHub repository to bugsee/specs (sdk/reporting/).
  • observed — Modified behavior in PROGRESS.md: The introductory live-ingestion claim now says reports route on a live Bugsee deployment rather than apidev.bugsee.com. The wire contract reference changes from bugsee/report-bundle-structure to bugsee/specs (sdk/reporting/).
  • observed — Modified behavior in PROGRESS.md: The symbol-pipeline documentation now points to bugsee/specs (sdk/reporting/) instead of report-bundle-structure.

Review of PR #58: MIT licence, README, internal names

  • Read the diff against origin/main
  • Checked the README quick start and claims against the code
  • Searched for leftover Proprietary, apidev and report-bundle-structure references
  • Posted the findings

I did not build or run tests. The checks below are by reading the code and grepping.

Findings

P3: README.md:53 links to https://github.com/bugsee/specs, which may not be public. An unauthenticated git ls-remote failed with a credentials prompt, which GitHub returns for both private and nonexistent repos. If the repo is private, external readers get a 404. Confirm it is public before merging, or drop the link until it is. (Posted as an inline comment.)

P3: crates/bugsee-core/src/model/mod.rs:11 still names the old repo. The doc comment says bugsee/report-bundle-structure. This is the repo path itself, not a § citation, so it falls outside the "left the section numbers" carve-out in the PR description. It also appears in the published rustdoc. Change it to bugsee/specs (sdk/reporting/). The line isn't in the diff, so I couldn't attach an inline comment to it.

P3: 101 files carry Copyright © 2026 Bugsee. All rights reserved. headers. LICENSE is MIT, which grants rights, so the headers now conflict with it. This is not a blocker. It could be a follow-up that rewrites the headers to SPDX-License-Identifier: MIT, or you could leave it. Your call.

What I checked and found fine

  • Licence: all 9 crates use license.workspace = true, and no crate overrides it. LICENSE is MIT. A repo-wide grep finds no other "proprietary" text, so the two edited lines in docs/design/out-of-process-monitor.md were the only ones.
  • README quick start: every API it uses exists with a matching signature:
    • Bugsee::launch_with
    • LaunchOptions::new
    • app_version!
    • Bugsee::event
    • Bugsee::set_attribute
    • Bugsee::flush(Duration), which returns bool
  • README claims:
    • LaunchOptions::data_dir and BUGSEE_DATA_DIR both exist.
    • LaunchGuard::drop calls Bugsee::stop(), so "dropping the guard shuts the SDK down" is accurate.
    • The fmt, clippy and --locked commands match .github/workflows/ci.yml.
    • The crate table matches crates/.
  • apidev and report-bundle-structure leftovers: they remain only in the places the PR description lists as deliberately unchanged. The mod.rs:11 line above is the one exception.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. This is docs and metadata only. There are no code or behaviour changes.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve, after checking that bugsee/specs is public.
  3. Most important items: the specs link visibility and the leftover repo name in mod.rs.
  4. Positives: The licence now matches across Cargo.toml, LICENSE and the design doc. The README is accurate and compile-checked. The PR description clearly separates what was changed from what was left for a decision.

P3 Low: possibly dead link in a public README

I couldn't confirm that https://github.com/bugsee/specs is publicly readable. An unauthenticated git ls-remote failed with a credentials prompt, which is what GitHub returns for both private and nonexistent repos. If bugsee/specs is private, public readers get a 404, and the README advertises the same internal repo this PR is trying to stop naming.

Fix: Either confirm the repo is public (or will be before this merges), or drop the hyperlink and say "wire format: see DESIGN.md §16" until it is.

MSRV is 1.88 and `Cargo.lock` is committed (CI builds with `--locked`).

Update the current MSRV rule in DESIGN.md.

DESIGN.md:84 is current rules text, not a historical snapshot. It still directs developers to use Rust 1.86.0, while the workspace and CI require Rust 1.88. Following that instruction can cause Cargo to reject the workspace as incompatible. PROGRESS.md:257 belongs to a historical “Recent work” entry, so it does not require the same correction.

Suggested fix
-**Edition 2021, MSRV 1.86 (CI-gated, verified on a pinned `1.86.0` toolchain against the committed `Cargo.lock`).** (The transitive dep graph forces this floor — `icu_*`/`idna_adapter` pulled in via `reqwest`→`url` require 1.86; a pinned-`1.85.0` build fails to compile them. The earlier "1.85"/"~1.75" figures were aspirational and untrue.)
+**Edition 2021, MSRV 1.88 (CI-gated on a pinned `1.88.0` toolchain against the committed `Cargo.lock`).** The workspace manifest and CI job define this floor.
