Part of #137

Documentation only. Documents the scope of setNetworkFilter (README "Network privacy" section and JSDoc): the per-platform difference in built-in redaction (on Android this package runs the built-in sanitizer before the filter; on iOS the filter replaces it), and the URL locations the filter does not reach (HTTP breadcrumbs, http.client spans, http_url on detect.http-errors reports), with mitigations.

Not fixed here, needs native SDK changes: routing span URLs through the filter or sanitizing them on iOS, and running the iOS built-in sanitizer ahead of the JS filter (iOS BGSNetworkDataSanitizer is not public; Android has Bugsee.getDefaultNetworkSanitizer()).

Possible follow-up in this repo: breadcrumbs could be handled in the wrapper. The breadcrumb filter already relays to JS, so cleaning data.url on http crumbs before the app callback is feasible, at the cost of a JS round trip per crumb. Not implemented in this PR.

Tests: typecheck and eslint clean. No code behavior changed, so no new tests.

… difference

Refs #137. The wrapper passes the native filters through; routing breadcrumb/span
URLs through the network filter and running the iOS built-in sanitizer ahead of
the JS filter are native SDK changes.

Review of PR #159 (docs: network filter scope and per-platform redaction)

  • Read the diff against origin/main
  • Check the doc claims against this repo's code
  • Post the review

No blocking issues. I found nothing worth an inline comment, so I posted none.

Overall risk: Low. The change is only README and JSDoc. src/index.ts changes comment text only, so no behaviour changes.

Merge recommendation: Approve once the native-SDK claims below are confirmed by someone with access to the SDKs.

What I checked in this repo

  • The Android claim is accurate. NetworkFilterBridge.java:226-230 runs the default sanitizer before the JS callback only when CaptureNetworkUseDefaultSanitizer is on. The default is true (android-options-manifest.json:313).
  • The option keys exist: com.bugsee.option.performance.enabled defaults to true, and com.bugsee.option.detect.http-errors defaults to false. Both match the "on by default" and "off by default" wording.
  • The README snippet is valid. createDefaultLaunchOptions() and setCustomOption(key, value) both exist, and the key is in option-keys.json.
  • setBreadcrumbFilter exists and is described as capture-gated on captureBreadcrumbs. That matches the "only when captureBreadcrumbs is enabled" wording. Both platforms install it as an SDK-level filter (Bugsee.setBreadcrumbFilter on Android, BugseeBreadcrumbFilterDecisionBlock on iOS), not only for manual addBreadcrumb calls. The advice to use it for HTTP crumbs is therefore plausible.

Things to confirm (not blockers)

  1. iOS honouring default-sanitizer (README.md:310). The README says iOS applies built-in query redaction to breadcrumbs "when default-sanitizer is on". In this repo the key appears only in the Android manifest, with module: bugsee-android, and in the shared option-keys.json. Nothing here shows iOS reads it. If it doesn't, reword this to say iOS always redacts breadcrumb queries.

  2. Native-SDK facts not checkable here. These come from the native SDKs, so I couldn't check them:

    • Android breadcrumb URLs being unredacted.
    • Span URL sanitization on each platform.
    • The http_url format on detect.http-errors reports.
    • The iOS sanitizer not being public.

They match the PR description, but they're worth a second look by someone who has the SDK sources, since this text tells users what their data exposure is.

  3. The breadcrumb mitigation is thin (P3). "Use setBreadcrumbFilter to clean them" gives no example and doesn't say which crumb fields carry the URL (data.url on http crumbs, per the PR description). BreadcrumbFilter's contract also drops a crumb that omits a writable key, so a naive filter can lose crumbs. A 5-line snippet would make this section actionable. The wrapper follow-up in the PR description would make it unnecessary.

Positives

I didn't run typecheck, lint or tests. This was a read-only review. I pushed no commits and changed no files.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on network privacy filtering for Android and iOS.
    • Clarified platform-specific sanitizer behavior, including Android’s built-in sanitization and iOS filter replacement.
    • Documented URL handling differences across network events, HTTP breadcrumbs, performance spans, and HTTP-error reports.
    • Added examples for breadcrumb filtering and disabling performance monitoring.

The README and setNetworkFilter API documentation now describe platform-specific sanitizer behavior and the filter’s network-only scope. They document URL handling for HTTP breadcrumbs, performance spans, and HTTP-error reports. The README also documents the option to disable performance monitoring.

The breadcrumb example can expose part of a URL credential when the credential contains a raw @. This narrow privacy gap should be corrected, but does not otherwise block merging the documentation.

Re-review of PR #159 after the latest push (c479e59)

No blocking issues. I posted one inline P3 comment.

Earlier finding: the breadcrumb mitigation was thin. c479e59 addresses it with a setBreadcrumbFilter example.

Checks on the example

  • It matches src/breadcrumbs/filter.ts. It returns the whole crumb with ...crumb, so category, level, message and type stay own keys and the crumb is not dropped by keptJson. data is returned as an object, which is allowed.
  • The narrowing on typeof data?.url !== 'string' should typecheck. I did not run the typecheck on this snippet.

New finding (P3, inline on README.md:321)

  • The example strips the query and fragment but keeps user:password@ in the URL. The README says Android records breadcrumb URLs with no redaction, so a copied snippet still records embedded credentials. Strip userinfo too, or say the example only handles query and fragment.

Still open from the earlier review (not blockers)

  • README.md:310 says iOS applies built-in breadcrumb query redaction "when default-sanitizer is on". Nothing in this repo shows iOS reads that key. It appears only in the Android manifest and the shared option-keys.json. If iOS always redacts breadcrumb queries, reword the line.
  • The facts about the native SDKs cannot be checked from this repo. Someone with the SDK sources should confirm them:
    • Android breadcrumb URLs being unredacted.
    • Span URL sanitization on each platform.
    • The format of http_url.
    • The type and field names of HTTP crumbs (type: 'http', data.url). This repo does not define these.

Overall risk: Low. Only the README and JSDoc changed.

Merge recommendation: Approve after someone confirms the native SDK claims. The userinfo point is optional.

Positives

I ran no tests, lint or typecheck. I changed no files and pushed no commits.

Re-review of PR #159 after the latest push (f7974ea)

No new findings, so I posted no inline comments.

Earlier finding fixed: the breadcrumb example kept user:password@ in the URL. f7974ea adds stripUrl, which removes the userinfo, query and fragment. I traced the cases by hand:

  • https://user:secret@api.example.com/x?y=1 becomes https://api.example.com/x.
  • A URL with no userinfo is unchanged apart from the query and fragment. The [^/?#@]*@ part stops at the first /, ? or #, so an @ in the path or query is not mistaken for userinfo.
  • Credentials containing @, /, ? or # are percent-encoded in a valid URL, so they can't end the match early.

Types and contract of the example

  • crumb.data is unknown on BreadcrumbSnapshot (src/breadcrumbs/types.ts:49), so the cast to { url?: unknown } | null | undefined is valid.
  • The filter returns { ...crumb, data }. This keeps category, level, message and type as own keys, so keptJson in src/breadcrumbs/filter.ts doesn't drop the crumb.
  • The new data is a plain object, which passes copyBreadcrumbData.
  • I did not run the typecheck or lint on the snippet. The checks above were done by reading the code.

Still open (not blockers, not checkable from this repo)

  • README.md:310 says iOS applies built-in breadcrumb query redaction "when default-sanitizer is on". Nothing here shows iOS reads that key. It appears only in the Android manifest and the shared option-keys.json. If iOS always redacts breadcrumb queries, drop the condition.
  • Someone with the native SDK sources should confirm these claims. They tell users what data they expose:
    • Android breadcrumb URLs being unredacted.
    • Span URL sanitization on each platform.
    • The format of http_url.
    • The type: 'http' and data.url shape of HTTP crumbs.

1. Overall risk: Low. Only the README and JSDoc changed, and the JSDoc change is comment text only.

2. Merge recommendation: Approve once someone confirms the native SDK claims above.

3. Most important issue to fix: None blocking. Check the default-sanitizer wording for iOS at README.md:310.

4. Positives

I ran no tests, lint or typecheck. I changed no files and pushed no commits.
