Part of #148. Fixes three of the five defects; the two omitted ones need work outside this repo.

  • iOS dSYM Archive post-action (plugin script and bare example scheme) now reads ios/.xcode.env and .xcode.env.local for the token when none is set.
  • Expo plugin: new editGradleFiles option; the Kotlin DSL refusal messages now name it, so the suggested re-prebuild can succeed. README has a Kotlin snippet (untested).
  • BUGSEE_STRIP_SOURCES_CONTENT=true drops sourcesContent from the uploaded source map (Android and iOS, including the Hermes compose path); if stripping fails the upload is skipped.

Omitted:

  • No placeholder-token check in Gradle plugin 4.0.8: the plugin is a separate artifact (pinned in native-versions.json); needs an upstream fix and version bump.
  • Per-flavor tokens (bugsee-<flavor>.properties): the Gradle plugin uploads mapping and symbols from the root bugsee.properties, so a wrapper-only per-variant token would split uploads across apps; needs design with the Gradle plugin.

…Files option for Kotlin projects, BUGSEE_STRIP_SOURCES_CONTENT

- dSYM Archive post-action (plugin script and bare example scheme) sources
ios/.xcode.env and .xcode.env.local for the token when none is set.
- Expo plugin: the Kotlin DSL refusal now names an option that makes the
  suggested re-prebuild succeed: editGradleFiles: false.
- Source map upload drops sourcesContent when BUGSEE_STRIP_SOURCES_CONTENT is on.

Review of PR #155

I read the diff against origin/main and the surrounding code. The code paths I traced were uploadComposedSourceMap, its callers (compose-then-inject.js, uploadFromArgs, bugsee-sourcemaps.gradle, bugsee-xcode.sh) and the plugin's Gradle mod wiring. I did not run the test suite or any builds. This is a static review only.

I found two P3 issues, posted as inline comments:

  • plugin/src/dsym-script.ts:80 (P3): sourcing .xcode.env(.local) with . can abort the whole post-action silently if the file has a syntax error, a bashism or an exit.
  • scripts/hermes-sourcemaps.js:437 (P3): stripSourcesContent ignores sections[].map.sourcesContent. An indexed map would upload with its source code still in it, even though the user asked to strip it.

I checked these and found no problems:

  • Strip env var on the upload paths: BUGSEE_STRIP_SOURCES_CONTENT reaches every upload path. Gradle's ExecOperations.exec inherits the environment, and bugsee-xcode.sh goes through uploadFromArgs(process.env).
  • Strip failure: it skips the upload and does not fall through to the unstripped map. The test covers this.
  • dSYM token lookup: env-file lookup only runs when no earlier source gave a token. It keeps Xcode's executable NODE_BINARY and an already-set BUGSEE_ENDPOINT. It runs before TOKEN_GUARD, so a placeholder in the file is still skipped.
  • editGradleFiles: false: it skips both the mods and refuseUnlessEditable, so Kotlin DSL projects can prebuild. Everything else the plugin writes is unchanged.

Overall risk: Low

Merge recommendation: Approve once you've looked at the two P3s. Neither blocks the merge. The sections case is worth fixing or documenting, because it is the one case where an explicit privacy opt-in fails open.

Most important issues to fix:

  1. Make source stripping cover indexed maps, or skip the upload when sections is present.
  2. Isolate the .xcode.env read, in a subshell or with a warning, so a bad file can't silently kill the dSYM upload.

Positives:

  • The new env-file behavior has focused tests: precedence, BUGSEE_TOKEN_IOS, the placeholder, and NODE_BINARY preservation.
  • The plugin script and the bare scheme share one ENV_FILE_TOKEN snippet, and a test checks that it appears exactly once, before the guard.
  • The omissions in the PR description (Gradle plugin placeholder check, per-flavor tokens) are scoped honestly.
  • The README says plainly that the Kotlin snippet is untested.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added editGradleFiles to control automatic Android Gradle updates; Kotlin DSL projects can disable edits and apply configuration manually.
    • dSYM uploads can load tokens from iOS environment files, with .xcode.env.local taking precedence over .xcode.env.
    • Added optional removal of source content from uploaded source maps via BUGSEE_STRIP_SOURCES_CONTENT; local maps remain unchanged.
  • Documentation

    • Expanded guidance for Gradle configuration, Kotlin DSL projects, environment-file tokens, and source-map content removal.

The React Native plugin adds editGradleFiles to control Android Gradle-file edits. The iOS Archive post-action can load tokens from .xcode.env and .xcode.env.local. Source-map uploads can optionally omit sourcesContent when BUGSEE_STRIP_SOURCES_CONTENT is enabled. The README adds configuration and Kotlin DSL guidance for these options.

Re-review of PR #155 after 3b72aba

  • Read the new commit and the earlier findings
  • Re-checked the changed code against its callers
  • Looked for new issues

This is a static review. I did not run the test suite or any builds.

Earlier findings: both look fixed.

  1. .xcode.env(.local) sourcing (P3, dsym-script.ts). Each file is now sourced in a nested subshell that prints the token: ENV_TOKEN=$( ( . "$ENV_FILE" ...; printf ... ) || true ).
    • A syntax error, a bashism or an exit in the file can no longer stop the post-action.
    • The save and restore of NODE_BINARY and BUGSEE_ENDPOINT is gone, because nothing leaks out of the subshell.
    • The plugin script, both fixtures and the bare example's scheme carry the same snippet. The scheme test covers the bad-file cases.
  2. stripSourcesContent and indexed maps (P3, hermes-sourcemaps.js).
    • It now recurses through sections[].map, which also covers CodeRabbit's note on the same function.
    • It returns the original text when nothing was removed.
    • A test with a sectioned map pins the behaviour.

New findings: none. I traced uploadComposedSourceMap and its callers (compose-then-inject.js, uploadFromArgs for the Gradle finish and upload commands). I also checked the editGradleFiles gating in plugin/src/index.ts. The BUGSEE_STRIP_SOURCES_CONTENT flag reaches every upload path. A strip failure skips the upload and does not fall back to the unstripped map.

One minor note, not worth blocking on: the new "survives a file with a syntax error or an exit" test asserts only status === 0 (expect([0]).toContain(result.status)). It would still pass if the token were silently dropped. The final assertion in that test does check the token is picked up when the file sets a bad endpoint.

Overall risk: Low

Merge recommendation: No open findings from me. Approve from my side once CI is green.

Most important issues to fix: none outstanding.

Positives:

  • Both review findings were fixed at the root. The subshell removed the save and restore code instead of adding more of it.
  • The strip failure path is fail-closed, which suits a privacy opt-in.
  • The omissions in the PR description are scoped honestly, and the README says the Kotlin snippet is untested.

Re-review of PR #155 after 38ccc10

This is a static review. I did not run the test suite or any builds.

No new findings. The new commit only touches tests, plus one small seam in compose-then-inject.js.

What I checked

  • run(argv, env, upload = uploadComposedSourceMap) (compose-then-inject.js). The default keeps the production behavior the same. The only caller that passes a third argument is the test. The jest.doMock/isolateModules setup is gone, so the strip-flag test now calls run directly and sees stripSources as [false, true].
  • New stripSourcesContent assertions. They match the implementation (hermes-sourcemaps.js:433).
    • A map with no sourcesContent returns the original text byte for byte, including when sections holds null, {} or a string map.
    • sourcesContent: [] counts as present and is removed, giving {"version":3}.
  • strip-failed stderr assertion. The expected text matches the say(...) call at hermes-sourcemaps.js:536, with its bugsee: prefix from say.
  • stripSourcesContentRequested cases. yes, ON, True and 1 all pass through ON_VALUES after trim and lowercase.
  • Kotlin refusal text. The tightened assertion matches the exact wording in APP_GRADLE_NOT_GROOVY and gradleNotGroovy (plugin/src/index.ts:127,134). A reworded message would now fail the test.

Earlier findings (.xcode.env sourcing, indexed-map stripping): still fixed as of 3b72aba. Nothing in 38ccc10 changes them.

Overall risk: Low

Merge recommendation: No open findings from me. Approve from my side once CI is green.

Most important issues to fix: none.

Positives

  • Passing the upload function into run() is simpler than module mocking and works with static analysis and mutation scoring.
  • The added assertions pin the byte-identical return, the stderr message and the env-value variants, which were gaps before.

Re-review of PR #155 after efbeeee

This is a static review. I did not run the test suite or any builds. The dependencies aren't installed in this checkout, so I couldn't run the changed test.

No new findings. The commit changes one test in scripts/__tests__/dsym-scheme-post-action.test.ts.

What I checked

  • The note from my last review is addressed. The "survives a file with a syntax error or an exit" test no longer asserts only status === 0. For each bad file (if [[ -n x ]]; then and exit 5) it now also asserts invoked is null and stdout is SKIP_NONE. This pins both halves of the behavior: the post-action reaches TOKEN_GUARD and exits 0, and the token is dropped rather than half-read.
  • The assertions match the snippet. In ENV_FILE_TOKEN (plugin/src/dsym-script.ts:78) the file is sourced in a nested subshell. A syntax error or an exit in a sourced file ends that subshell before the printf runs, so ENV_TOKEN is empty and TOKEN stays unset. SKIP_NONE is the guard's no-token line ('warning: bugsee: dSYM upload skipped: no app token is configured\n'). I assumed the test environment has no CREDS fallback to fill the token in. That fits the harness: PATH is /usr/bin:/bin, and the test passes no HOME or creds file.
  • The endpoint case still has coverage. It moved out of the loop into the assertion below it. A file that exports a bad BUGSEE_ENDPOINT next to a real token still calls the CLI with that token. The subshell keeps the file's endpoint from leaking out, so the case is fine on its own.

Minor, not blocking: the test title still says "or one that sets a bad NODE_BINARY or endpoint". The NODE_BINARY case is covered by the separate "keeps Xcode's executable NODE_BINARY" test. The title could be trimmed.

Earlier findings (.xcode.env sourcing, indexed-map stripping): still fixed as of 3b72aba. Nothing in efbeeee touches them.

Overall risk: Low

Merge recommendation: No open findings from me. Approve from my side once CI is green.

Most important issues to fix: none.

Positives

  • The tightened test now catches a regression where the token is silently read from a broken file, or where the script stops before the guard.
  • The test explains in a comment why the failure only costs the token.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Isolate env-file sourcing before node discovery.

The new token lookup can set TOKEN from an env file. If NODE_BINARY is unset or non-executable, the later . commands source both files in the parent shell. An env file can then overwrite the validated BUGSEE_ENDPOINT. A terminating command can also abort the post-action before node or the CLI runs.

Do not remove env-file loading completely. The existing test requires NODE_BINARY from .xcode.env. Source each file in a subshell and copy only NODE_BINARY back to the post-action shell.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Isolate env-file evaluation in the NODE_BINARY fallback.

When NODE_BINARY is not executable, the post-action directly sources both env files after TOKEN_GUARD. A reachable env file can run exit, so the script can stop before run_cli uploads the dSYM. It can also replace the validated BUGSEE_APP_TOKEN with a placeholder or change BUGSEE_ENDPOINT without another guard.

Evaluate each file in a subshell and copy out only NODE_BINARY. Regenerate the checked-in build output with the same change.

Re-review of PR #155 (merged), after the CodeRabbit comment on efbeeee

This is a static review. I did not run the test suite or any builds. The PR is already merged: this branch has no commits beyond origin/main, and the merge is f325698. I changed nothing and pushed nothing.

No new findings from me. Nothing in the PR changed since my last review. The only new input is CodeRabbit's note on dsym-script.ts.

CodeRabbit's note: the NODE_BINARY fallback sources .xcode.env(.local) in the parent shell

  • The code is real. packages/react-native/plugin/src/dsym-script.ts:139-146 still sources both files with . in the post-action shell when NODE_BINARY isn't executable.
  • This PR did not add it. f325698^ has the same two . "${PROJECT_DIR}/.xcode.env…" lines, and the PR leaves them as they were. Its new ENV_FILE_TOKEN reads the token in a subshell, so the new code can't abort the script or change NODE_BINARY or BUGSEE_ENDPOINT.
  • The residual risk. A GUI Archive often has no NODE_BINARY, so this fallback usually runs. A file that exports a different BUGSEE_ENDPOINT or BUGSEE_APP_TOKEN can then replace the baked or resolved value in the parent shell, after the token guard has already passed. A bashism that is a syntax error under /bin/sh, or an exit, can stop the script there. This only affects someone who puts those variables in those files and also archives from the GUI, and the behavior is the same as before the PR. I'd rate it P3 and don't consider it a defect in this PR.
  • Suggested follow-up. CodeRabbit's fix looks sound: source each file in a subshell and copy back only NODE_BINARY. It keeps the existing order (local file wins), and the ENV_FILE_TOKEN snippet can stay as it is. If you take it, the shared snippet in the bare example's scheme and the two fixtures under plugin/src/__tests__/fixtures/ need the same change, because they are pinned to this text.

Still open, trivial: the test title at scripts/__tests__/dsym-scheme-post-action.test.ts:288 still says "or one that sets a bad NODE_BINARY or endpoint", but the loop covers only the syntax error and exit cases. The earlier findings (indexed-map stripping, subshell sourcing of the token) stay fixed.

Overall risk: Low

Merge recommendation: Already merged. No findings against it. The optional follow-up above can go in a separate small PR.

Most important issues to fix: none in this PR. The parent-shell NODE_BINARY sourcing is the only thing worth a follow-up.

Positives

  • The token read is isolated, so a broken env file can only cost the token.
  • The strip failure path is fail-closed, which suits a privacy opt-in.
  • The tests pin the sectioned-map, byte-identical-return and bad-env-file cases.
