Umbrella and hand-off: #53.

What

  • packages/trackers/src/browser/environment-tracker.ts (+test): domain tracker with language (+ languagechange), timezone (polled), hints, permissions (queried without prompting, permissions.query only) and a private-mode tri-state behind detectPrivateMode (default OFF, fail-closed; gated by the browser launch option captureEnvironmentHints; the WebView launch passes false explicitly).
  • Events language_changed, timezone_changed, private_mode_detected via system-events.ts (single onAny subscription so a restart cannot lose a change). No displayMode stage (UiTracker owns it).
  • Per-launch seams reach the shared singleton through registry rebind (merge-not-drop, old seams detached first); browser and WebView launches go through environmentTrackerFor (launch-level tests fail if bypassed).
  • Hardening: guarded reporter, wrapped listeners/callbacks, hostRead, epoch guards for stale async, omit-never-fabricate (a read that throws keeps the retained value; no fake change events), once-per-failure-streak reporting, emitted payloads are copies.
  • Changeset and docs/PROGRESS.md updated.

Verification

  • Test-first; mutator loop on every changed entity (mutations rolled back from saved copies).
  • Five read-only Opus review rounds; all real findings fixed test-first (the last round's three low findings are fixed in the latest commit).
  • Lint, typecheck (102/102), cycles pass; coverage 100% line/function/statement, branch 99.43% (trackers) / 98.81% (browser) / 99.43% (webview).
  • Note: 3 @bugsee/node-utils chmod tests fail only when run as root (sandbox); unrelated to this change.

Open owner decision

Private-mode detection default OFF behind an explicit option (detecting private browsing can read as circumventing the user's intent). Also note captureEnvironmentHints currently gates only private-mode detection (hints/permissions always run), so the name may deserve a rename.

  • New Features

    • Added browser environment tracking for language, time zone, optional hints, and non-prompting permission states.
    • Added retained snapshots, change events, and visibility-aware updates.
    • Added configurable private-browsing detection based on browser signals; WebView keeps detection disabled.
    • Added the captureEnvironmentHints browser option, enabled by default, with opt-out support.
    • Browser system events now report language, time-zone, and confirmed private-mode changes.
    • Exposed environment tracking APIs and types through supported packages.
  • Documentation

    • Documented tracking capabilities, configuration, permission handling, and private-browsing detection limitations.

The pull request adds a browser EnvironmentTracker for language, time zone, browser hints, permission states, and optional private-mode detection. Browser system events map tracker readings to language, time-zone, and affirmative private-mode events. Browser launch adds the captureEnvironmentHints option. WebView supplies its document and scheduler and disables private-mode detection. The change also adds exports, tests, documentation, and a changeset.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7b012

Browser launches follow the documented detection default. No issue identified here needs to be resolved before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 79457

Browser launches now record positive private-browsing guesses without explicit enablement. The documented opt-out, positive-only reporting and WebView exclusion limit exposure, but this remains a privacy-sensitive change to default telemetry.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: Browser launches automatically derive a private-browsing classification and publish positive guesses into events.system when system-event capture is active. Upgrading integrations need not explicitly enable this new sensitive inference. The heuristic can also classify constrained normal storage as private browsing. Documentation accurately describes the opt-out, and explicit false is enforced; this concern is the privacy impact of the default, not an observed opt-out bypass or a documentation defect.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is browser-session environment classification in the existing system-event capture stream. It applies to browser launches with system-event capture active unless explicitly opted out. The inspected path does not establish cross-origin, cross-tenant or privileged-service access; downstream report access and retention remain outside the verified scope.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained concern is automatic sensitive inference, not an established privilege-escalation attack. A storage-quota result can create a private_mode_detected capture entry without affirmative feature enablement. The release note acknowledges false positives, and existing storage tracing also calls storage.estimate(), limiting claims that this PR first exposes quota information.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Private-mode forwarding is controlled per source as well as at tracker configuration. An opted-out source ignores both live positive events and retained positive answers, even when another consumer enables the shared tracker. Tests cover that shared-consumer case.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Ordinary relaunch stops the previous client before constructing its replacement. Core stop synchronously halts capture; the coordinator stops providers, and the system-event provider unsubscribes its source. Source deactivation then releases environment subscriptions. This resolves the ordinary sequential cleanup question, but does not establish isolation for independently constructed concurrent sources.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider requiring explicit enablement for private-browsing inference independently of routine language and timezone observation, reducing the privacy impact of upgrades that retain existing launch options.

Deep review of PR #84 (EnvironmentTracker, TR7)

  • Read the tracker, the browser/WebView launch wiring, system-events, the protocol option and the tests
  • Traced the emitter activation order, the registry rebind path, and who consumes the tracker's output
  • Posted 2 inline findings

I read the code only. node_modules isn't installed in this checkout, so I did not run tests, lint or typecheck. I'm relying on the PR's stated verification (coverage and gates).

No earlier reviews of mine exist on this PR, so there are no repeats.

Findings (both P3, details inline)

# Sev Location Summary
1 P3 environment-tracker.ts:534 Hints and permissions are collected on every launch, with no consumer. system-events.ts handles only language, timezone and privateMode. This costs 5 permissions.query() calls, per-status listeners and a 60 s timer for no product value. It also widens the privacy-review surface (camera, mic and geolocation state) with no opt-in.
2 P3 environment-tracker.ts:701 private_mode_detected is re-emitted on every #attach() (restart, or a rebind that moves seams while running). A session can contain duplicate events. The quota heuristic (under 120 MiB = yes) can also false-positive on a normal window with constrained storage.

Checked, no issue found

  • Activation ordering: the onAny listener is added before onActiveChange fires (emitter.ts:79-85, 123-128). A change emitted during the activation read is not lost, which is the single-subscription claim in the PR.
  • Seam handling: rebind detaches with the old seams before swapping. Epoch guards drop stale permission and private-mode promises. The WebView explicit detectPrivateMode: false works because pick uses ??, so a false is not overridden by the previous value.
  • Host reads and reporters: hostile getters, a throwing reporter and a failing addEventListener are all guarded.
  • Omit-never-fabricate: a read that throws keeps the retained value, so there are no fake change events.

Overall

  1. Overall risk: Low. The code is additive, browser-only, default-off for the sensitive part, and defensively written.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve once finding 1 is decided. Finding 2 is safe to defer. This is a comment-only review and I cannot approve PRs.
  3. Most important issues to fix: finding 1 (gate the unused permission and hints work, or wire a consumer), then the captureEnvironmentHints name/scope question you already raised. Finding 1 would settle it either way.
  4. Positives: strong failure isolation, epoch-guarded async work, copied payloads, a clear retention rule documented in the file header, the sensitive heuristic fail-closed and opt-in, and launch-level tests that fail if the singleton path is bypassed.

Severity: P3 Low (design / unnecessary privacy surface)

Problem: Permissions (and hints) are queried on every activation, with no opt-in. Nothing consumes them. The only consumer of the tracker is packages/browser/src/system-events.ts, whose onAny handler handles only language, timezone and privateMode. current() is not called anywhere outside tests, and the hints/permissions events go nowhere.

Impact: Every browser launch issues 5 permissions.query() calls (camera, microphone, geolocation, notifications, idle-detection) and attaches change listeners to each PermissionStatus. It also reads fingerprint-ish hints (webdriver, DNT, GPC) and keeps a 60 s interval timer for the whole session, to produce data nobody reads. The state strings are never sent to the wire, so this isn't a leak today. But it widens the privacy review surface (mic/camera/geolocation state) with zero product value, and the PR text notes that captureEnvironmentHints gates only private-mode.

Scenario: launch() with defaults → onAny subscribes → #attach() → #queryPermissions() runs. Every PermissionStatus change re-emits a permissions event that no subscriber handles.

Fix: Either wire these stages to a consumer in the same PR (an environment/hints stream), or gate the permission/hints stages behind an explicit option (or captureEnvironmentHints) until there is a consumer. That also resolves the "name gates only private mode" question.

Verified: the trace is accurate. system-events.ts only handles language, timezone and privateMode from onAny, so the hints/permissions stages run on every launch with no wire consumer (only permissions.query() is called, nothing prompts, and nothing is sent). Those stages are part of the owner-specified Environment domain tracker (design #53 §15), so I'm not gating them in this PR on my own: whether to gate them behind captureEnvironmentHints (which also settles the naming question) or leave them for the upcoming consumer is raised with the owner. Leaving the code as is for now.

Fixed in 7b5b0a4: the tracker now reads hints and queries permissions only when asked. New tracker env flags observeHints / queryPermissions (default false). The browser system-events source passes both false explicitly (never inherited from the window's shared tracker), so a launch issues no permissions.query(), attaches no PermissionStatus change listeners and reads no hints. Changing a flag while running re-attaches: turning one off drops its retained reading and, for permissions, the status listeners and in-flight queries. Tests: default off with an onAny subscriber, each flag alone, on/off while running, idle rebind, and a launch-level test that permissions.query is never called; the mutator loop ran on the gates (one equivalent survivor: hints turning off needs no re-attach as it holds no listeners). Separately, per the owner's decision private-mode detection is now ON by default (opt-out via captureEnvironmentHints: false).

Severity: P3 Low

Problem: #settlePrivate emits on every #detectPrivateMode() call, and that runs on every #attach(). This includes the re-attach that rebind() performs when a seam moved, and every deactivate/activate cycle. The system-events source forwards each yes as a new private_mode_detected event.

Impact: A session can contain duplicate private_mode_detected events, for example whenever the events source is stopped and started again, or a relaunch on the same window swaps document/scheduler while the tracker is running. Each repeat is a fresh storage.estimate() probe.

Scenario: The opted-in app relaunches Bugsee on the same window and passes a different scheduler or document. rebind takes the moved && running path, which calls #release() then #attach(), and that re-probes and re-emits.

Fix: Emit only when the result differs from the retained #private (as the other stages do), or document the once-per-activation duplication in the event's contract. The retained #private is already reset on privateTurnedOff, so it is safe to compare against.

Related heuristic risk (P3): the quota thresholds at lines 707-714 flag any quota under 120 MiB as yes. A normal (non-private) window on a near-full disk or a constrained device may have a small quota. The resulting private_mode_detected event then asserts something false in a bug report. The code and docs already say "heuristic", but consider naming the event/params so a consumer cannot read it as fact (for example, include the measured quota bucket).

Fixed in 9b90260: private_mode_detected is now emitted only when the result differs from the retained answer, and a retained definitive yes/no is not re-probed on restart or on a rebind that moves seams (an inconclusive unknown is still retried; turning detection off clears the answer so turning it on again re-detects). Tests cover restart after yes/no/unknown, rebind-while-running, off/on, and a superseded in-flight probe, with the mutator loop run on the change. On the quota heuristic: the tracker header and the private_mode_detected comment in system-events.ts now say explicitly that constrained storage can false-positive and that the result is a hint, never a certainty. I left the thresholds and the event shape unchanged.

The de-dup is in 9b90260 (emit only when the answer differs from the retained one; a retained yes/no is not re-probed on restart or a seam-moving rebind). In 7b5b0a4, per the owner's binding decision (2026-10-20), private-mode detection is now ON by default and opt-out (captureEnvironmentHints: false; an invalid value is OFF and reported), so the once-per-answer behaviour matters for every launch. The false-positive risk stays documented as a hint, never a certainty (tracker header, launch option JSDoc, events source comment, changeset); thresholds and the event shape are unchanged, and only a yes produces an event.

Deep review of PR #84, re-run on the latest push (9b90260)

I read the code only. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck. I'm relying on the PR's stated gates.

Earlier findings

# Earlier finding Status
2 private_mode_detected was re-emitted on every #attach() (restart or rebind). Fixed in 9b90260. #settlePrivate now emits only when the answer differs from the retained #private (environment-tracker.ts:705-709). A retained yes or no is not re-probed (:665). An inconclusive unknown is retried. The header and system-events.ts wording now says the quota check is a heuristic that can false-positive.
1 Hints and permissions run on every launch with no consumer. Still open, by design. You've said you're raising it with the owner, so I'm not repeating it.

New findings

None. I looked specifically at the new change:

  • Epoch handling: the early return at :665 happens before ++this.#privateEpoch, so a skipped probe doesn't invalidate one in flight. #release() bumps the epoch, so a stale settle is still ignored.
  • Turn-off and turn-on: rebind clears #private when detectPrivateMode turns off. Turning it back on therefore probes again and emits afresh, which is correct.
  • unknown results: unknown to unknown no longer emits. The consumer only forwards yes, so nothing is lost.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change is additive, browser-only and fail-closed. The private-mode part is default-off.
  2. Merge recommendation: Fine to merge once the owner decides finding 1: either gate hints and permissions behind captureEnvironmentHints or leave them until a consumer exists. That decision also settles the rename question you raised.
  3. Most important item: finding 1 only. It's a product and privacy-surface decision, not a defect.
  4. Positives:
    • The retention and epoch design is consistent.
    • A failed read keeps the retained value, so there are no fake change events.
    • Emitted payloads are copies.
    • Launch-level tests fail if the shared-tracker path is bypassed.
    • The review fixes were each followed by test updates.

Re-review of PR #84 on the latest push (f46ed15)

I read the code only. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, so I'm relying on the PR's stated gates.

What changed since my last review (9b90260): one test-only commit, f46ed155. It adds captureEnvironmentHints to two option-classification tables:

  • option-directions.test.ts:55 lists it as 'off', so an invalid value must stay OFF.
  • relaunch-options.test.ts:142 lists it as a reset option.

Checks

  • The option definition in packages/browser/src/launch.ts:184 uses default: false with FAIL_CLOSED_BOOLEAN_OPTION. That matches the 'off' direction, so the new classification is consistent with the code.
  • launch-options.invalid.test.ts:70 already covers the same option's invalid-value path.
  • The WebView launch still passes detectPrivateMode: false explicitly (packages/webview/src/launch.ts).
  • No production code changed in this push.

Earlier findings

# Finding Status
2 private_mode_detected re-emitted on every #attach() Fixed in 9b90260 (confirmed in my previous re-review)
1 Hints and permissions run on every launch with no consumer Still open. It is a product and privacy decision for the owner, so I'm not repeating it.

  3. Most important item: finding 1 only. It is a design and privacy-surface question, not a defect.
  4. Positives:
    • The last push closes a test-coverage gap for the new option, so a future change to its direction or reset behavior will fail a test.
    • The earlier retention and epoch design still holds.

Report private-mode probe failures once per failure streak.

#detectPrivateMode sends storage, estimate, and quota getter failures directly to hostRead. hostRead reports every failure. Re-review of PR #84 on the latest push (9d82b23)

I read the code and the diff only. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, so I'm relying on the PR's stated gates.

What changed since my last review (f46ed15): one commit, 9d82b230. It touches environment-tracker.ts, system-events.ts, their tests and docs/PROGRESS.md. It addresses the three CodeRabbit findings from the 11:35 review.

CodeRabbit findings

Finding Status
system-events.ts: an omitted detectPrivateMode was not forwarded, so a later same-window caller could inherit an earlier opt-in. Fixed. The factory now passes detectPrivateMode: env.detectPrivateMode ?? false (system-events.ts:245). pick uses ??, so an explicit false replaces a retained true. The rebind path then clears the answer and cancels any in-flight probe (environment-tracker.ts:227-230). The new test covers the on, then omitted, then no-probe sequence.
#publishPermissions: an answered but unusable state left the stale permission in place. Fixed. unusable is set only when the read did not throw (environment-tracker.ts:646). The early return now requires both an empty snapshot and no unusable answer (:654). A failed query or a throwing state getter still keeps the retained state and emits nothing. All three cases have tests.
#detectPrivateMode: storage, estimate and quota getter failures were reported on every probe. Fixed. They go through #streak('private:storage') and #streak('private:quota') (:671, :698). The test checks once-per-streak reporting and a new streak after recovery.

Earlier findings

# Finding Status
2 private_mode_detected re-emitted on every #attach() Fixed in 9b90260
1 Hints and permissions run on every launch with no consumer Still open. It is an owner decision and I'm not repeating it.

New findings

None that need a fix. I checked these specifically:

  • Epoch and early return: the retained yes/no return at :669 comes before ++#privateEpoch, so a skipped probe does not cancel one in flight. #release() still bumps the epoch, so a stale settle is ignored.
  • Streak keys: private:storage and private:quota live in the same #failing set as the other stages, and reset() clears it.
  • Shared tracker with two consumers: latest launch wins, so a later consumer passing false switches detection off for an earlier opted-in one. This follows the documented rebind rule. The browser and WebView launches both pass the value explicitly, so it only matters for direct factory callers.
  • Empty first permissions snapshot (nit, not a defect): if every answered status is unusable and nothing is retained, #commitPermissions({}) emits permissions: {} (same(undefined, {}) is false). Nothing consumes permissions today and {} is an honest "answered, nothing usable". If you want strictly no emission, skip the commit when #permissions is undefined and next is empty. The retained-then-unusable case is covered by a test, but this first-snapshot case is not.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change is additive and browser-only. Private-mode detection is default-off and fail-closed, and the factory can no longer inherit an opt-in.
  2. Merge recommendation: Fine to merge once the owner settles the hints and permissions gating question, which also settles the captureEnvironmentHints name.
  3. Most important item: the product and privacy decision on hints and permissions. It is not a defect.
  4. Positives:
    • Each CodeRabbit finding was fixed with a targeted test.
    • The privacy fix sits at the factory boundary, so the retained-seam merge logic did not have to change.
    • The distinction between a failed read and an unusable answer is now explicit in the permissions code.

Addressed CodeRabbit's three outside-diff findings in 9d82b23 (each verified against the code first, fixed test-first, mutator loop run):

  1. system-events.ts: the events source now always passes detectPrivateMode: env.detectPrivateMode ?? false, so an omitted option can no longer inherit ON from an earlier source on the same window (test: activate with it on, then with it omitted, no probe and no private_mode_detected).
  2. #publishPermissions: an answered but unusable state now clears the stale retained permission and commits the change; a failed or rejected query still keeps the retained snapshot without emitting.
  3. #detectPrivateMode: storage, estimate and quota getter failures now report once per failure streak (separate streak keys), resetting after a clean probe.

Full pnpm test shows only the 3 known root-only node-utils chmod failures; lint, typecheck and cycles are clean.

The review / review check failed on d276966, but it is not this PR's: the job died during its own setup (bun install could not extract the @anthropic-ai/claude-agent-sdk-linux-x64 tarball) before any review ran, so nothing in the diff was reviewed or failed. I re-ran the failed job once; lint/typecheck/cycles/coverage are green on this head and the other bot reviews are clean.

Re-review of PR #84 on the latest push (d276966)

I read the code and the diff only. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, so I'm relying on the PR's stated gates.

What changed since my last review (9d82b23): one commit, d2769664, a merge of origin/main (the UiTracker, #82) into this branch. No EnvironmentTracker logic changed. The only new work is the merge resolution in the files both PRs touch.

Merge resolution checks

  • Conflict markers: none left in packages, docs or .changeset.
  • system-events.ts: the merged file has the UiTracker wiring (orientation, colorScheme) and the environment wiring side by side.
    • The single onAny subscription is still pushed after the UI subscriptions, so the activation-order guarantee from the earlier review still holds.
    • detectPrivateMode: env.detectPrivateMode ?? false from 9d82b23 is intact (system-events.ts:231).
    • The injected window/document logic and the guarded screen read from the UiTracker work still sit in front of the environment factory, so both trackers get the same window.
  • Launch wiring: browser/launch.ts passes document, detectPrivateMode and scheduler to the events source. webview/launch.ts still passes detectPrivateMode: false explicitly.
  • trackers/src/browser/index.ts and index.test.ts: the export list now holds both trackers' names. The sorted-keys assertion includes EnvironmentTracker, DEFAULT_PERMISSION_NAMES, the two quota constants, environmentTrackerFor and resetEnvironmentTracker next to UiTracker, uiTrackerFor and resetUiTracker.
  • Docs and metadata: the trackers README and package.json description list both trackers.

Earlier findings

1 Hints and permissions run on every launch with no consumer Still open. It is an owner decision on privacy surface and the captureEnvironmentHints name. I'm not repeating it.

The one nit from my last review is also still there: an empty first permissions snapshot emits permissions: {} when every answered state is unusable and nothing is retained. Nothing consumes permissions today, so it does no harm.

New findings

None.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change is additive and browser-only. Private-mode detection is default-off and fail-closed. The merge adds no new behavior.

  3. Most important item: the product and privacy decision on hints and permissions. It is not a defect.
  4. Positives:
    • The merge keeps the single-subscription ordering and the explicit detectPrivateMode default.
    • The public-surface test pins the combined export list.
    • The two trackers share one per-window key, so they don't diverge on which window they bind to.

Re-review of PR #84 on the latest push (7b5b0a4)

I read the code and the diff only. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, because node_modules isn't installed here. I'm relying on the PR's stated gates.

What changed since my last review (d276966): one commit, 7b5b0a44. It does three things:

  • It adds the tracker env flags observeHints and queryPermissions, both default false.
  • It makes the browser source pass both as false explicitly.
  • It flips private-mode detection to ON by default, with captureEnvironmentHints: false as the opt-out. The browser launch option default is now true, and the events source uses detectPrivateMode ?? true.

Earlier finding 1 (hints and permissions with no consumer): fixed

  • #publishHints and #queryPermissions now return early unless their flag is set (environment-tracker.ts:547, :558).
  • system-events.ts:233-234 passes observeHints: false and queryPermissions: false explicitly, so a shared per-window tracker cannot inherit them.
  • rebind handles a gate flip while the tracker is running:
    • A changed gate counts as reattach (:239-242). The tracker releases first, which bumps the epoch and drops the status listeners and in-flight queries, then attaches again.
    • A gate that is off clears the retained #hints or #permissions (:245-246).
    • When the private-mode setting changes at the same time, the re-attach path handles it. #release cancels any probe in flight, and #attach re-probes unless a yes/no answer is retained.
  • A launch now makes no permissions.query() call and attaches no PermissionStatus listeners.

Earlier findings 2 and the CodeRabbit items: still fixed

No regressions in the code paths touched by this commit.

New findings (both P3, inline)

# Location Summary
1 packages/protocol/src/options.ts:78 The CaptureEnvironmentHints JSDoc still says "Default false". It is now true (opt-out). This is the canonical option surface, so it tells integrators the opposite of the real behaviour.
2 packages/bugsee/src/option-directions.test.ts:55 The comment says "default OFF: an invalid value stays OFF". With the new default, an invalid value turns the option off (fail closed). The 'off' classification is still correct.

Neither finding affects behaviour.

Observations (not defects)

  • Public factory default changed.
    • createBrowserSystemEventsSource is exported from @bugsee/browser. A direct caller who omits detectPrivateMode now gets detection on.
    • The in-repo callers are explicit: the browser launch passes the option, and WebView passes false.
    • The changeset and the option docs say the default is on.
  • The changeset still describes hints and permissions as something the tracker "can also observe". That is accurate now, since they are opt-in at the tracker level.
  • Opt-out flag. An invalid captureEnvironmentHints value fails closed to off, via FAIL_CLOSED_BOOLEAN_OPTION. That is consistent with the docs and with launch-options.invalid.test.ts.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change is additive and browser-only. The unused hints and permissions surface is now gated off. The default flip is an explicit owner decision.
  2. Merge recommendation: Fine to merge once the stale option doc and test comment are updated. The captureEnvironmentHints name question still stands, but it matters less now that hints and permissions are not read at launch.
  3. Most important item: finding 1. The protocol doc contradicts the shipped default.
  4. Positives:
    • The gates default off at the tracker and are passed explicitly by the source, so the singleton cannot leak an earlier setting.
    • rebind tears down listeners and in-flight work when a gate turns off.
    • The commit comes with launch-level tests, including one that permissions.query is never called.

Severity: P3 Low (stale public doc)

Problem: The JSDoc for CaptureEnvironmentHints still says "Default false: detecting private browsing can read as circumventing the user's intent". Commit 7b5b0a4 flipped the default to true (packages/browser/src/launch.ts:187, with .get(..., true) at :933). This file was not touched by that commit.

Impact: BugseeOption is the canonical protocol surface. An integrator who sets the option by its canonical key com.bugsee.option.capture.environment-hints reads that private-browsing detection is off unless they enable it. In fact it now runs unless they set false, which is the opposite of what the doc says.

Fix: Say "Default true (opt-out); false disables; a non-boolean value is treated as off and reported". Also correct the "Language and time-zone changes are NOT gated by this" clause only if you change that behaviour.

Fixed in 71357e7: the CaptureEnvironmentHints JSDoc in packages/protocol/src/options.ts now says default TRUE (opt-out), false disables, a non-boolean value is treated as off and reported, and the WebView launch never enables it.

Severity: P3 Low (stale comment)

The trailing comment says "private-mode heuristic, default OFF: an invalid value stays OFF". The default is now ON (7b5b0a4), so an invalid value now turns the option off (via FAIL_CLOSED_BOOLEAN_OPTION, invalid: false) instead of staying off. The 'off' classification is still correct, but the comment describes the old default. Suggested text: "private-mode heuristic, default ON: an invalid value turns it OFF (fail closed)".

Merges origin/main (ProcessTracker, captureUserIdle). The browser system-events
source now ignores privateMode answers when launched with detectPrivateMode:
false, even if another consumer enabled detection on the shared tracker.

Re-review of PR #84 on the latest push (71357e7)

I read the code and the diff only. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, so I'm relying on the PR's stated gates.

What changed since my last review (7b5b0a4): one commit, 71357e72. It merges origin/main (ProcessTracker #83, captureUserIdle) and adds a sink-level private-mode gate and doc fixes. I reviewed only the parts that touch this PR.

Earlier findings: status

Finding Status
CaptureEnvironmentHints JSDoc said "Default false" (protocol/options.ts) Fixed. It now says default TRUE (opt-out), non-boolean treated as off, WebView never enables it.
Stale "default OFF" comment in option-directions.test.ts Fixed.
CodeRabbit: opt-out not enforced at the event sink Fixed. BrowserSystemEventsSource stores #privateMode (system-events.ts:87,109) and forwards a yes only if it is true (:161). The constructor gets env.detectPrivateMode ?? true, which is the same default as the tracker call, so the two can't drift. This also covers an injected environment. A test covers an opted-out source over both an injected emitter and the real window singleton, with another consumer enabling detection.
CodeRabbit: changeset scope (private_mode_detected is Browser-only) Fixed. The changeset now says WebView keeps detection off.
CodeRabbit: canonical doc vs browser default Fixed. The protocol doc now states the TRUE default.
Earlier: hints/permissions read with no consumer, #attach re-emit, CodeRabbit ×3 Still fixed. No regressions in the touched paths.

The merged ProcessTracker/captureUserIdle work is out of scope for this PR, and I didn't review it. The captureUserIdle option is opt-in and fail-closed like the other options. I saw no interaction with the environment tracker.

New finding (P3, inline at environment-tracker.ts:691)

A retained private: yes is not re-delivered to a new session. The tracker outlives sessions, and non-test code never calls resetEnvironmentTracker. On a restart or relaunch on the same window, #detectPrivateMode returns early for a retained yes/no and nothing is emitted. Only the first session on a window therefore gets private_mode_detected. With the default now ON, every stop → launch on one window loses the hint, for example a StrictMode or SPA remount. The fix is to re-emit a retained yes on activation, or to read current().privateMode in the events source after subscribing. The existing restart tests assert no re-emission, so they need updating.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change is additive and browser-only. The privacy opt-out is now enforced at the sink. The unused hints and permissions work is gated off.
  2. Merge recommendation: Fine to merge. The new finding is a correctness gap in a heuristic hint, not a safety issue, and it can be fixed here or in a follow-up.
  3. Most important item: the retained yes not being re-delivered on relaunch.
  4. Positives:
    • The sink-level gate closes the shared-tracker leak without changing the retained-seam logic.
    • The default is defined in one place and shared by both construction paths.
    • The docs and changeset now match the shipped defaults.
    • The new tests exercise the real window singleton, not only injected stubs.

Severity: P3 Low

Location: environment-tracker.ts:691 (with system-events.ts:141-165)

Problem: A retained yes/no is neither re-probed nor re-emitted when the tracker is restarted. private_mode_detected is a per-session event, but the tracker outlives sessions: nothing in non-test code calls resetEnvironmentTracker, so the registry keeps the answer for the window's lifetime.

Impact: Only the first session on a window ever gets private_mode_detected. Later sessions on the same window silently lose it, so those bug reports lack the hint. With the default now ON, this shows up for every relaunch.

Scenario: launch() → probe settles yes → event emitted. The app calls stop() (or a StrictMode/SPA remount re-launches), which deactivates the tracker. A new launch() on the same window reactivates it. #attach() → #detectPrivateMode() returns at line 691 because #private.private === 'yes'. Nothing is emitted, so the new session's events.system never contains private_mode_detected.

Fix: On activation, re-deliver a retained yes to the new subscriber. Either re-emit privateMode from #detectPrivateMode() when the answer is retained (this is cheap, with no new probe), or have the events source read current().privateMode right after subscribing and emit if it is yes and #privateMode is set. Add a restart test for the yes case. The existing restart tests assert the opposite, "no re-emission", so they need to change.

Valid, fixed in 08509d3. I took the events-source option: right after subscribing, BrowserSystemEventsSource reads current().privateMode and emits private_mode_detected once if the retained answer is yes, only when this source's own detectPrivateMode is on (the sink-side guard from the earlier fix). There is no re-probe, no/unknown stay silent, and a yes the activation itself delivered is not duplicated. The tracker is unchanged, so its restart tests (no re-emission from the tracker) still hold. Tests: a second session on the same window gets the event with the estimate not called again, a retained no is silent, an opted-out source stays silent (injected tracker with a retained yes), a retained yes is emitted exactly once when the activation also emits it, and later answers still forward. Mutator loop: dropping the dedupe flag, the yes check, the opt-out gate or the method each failed a test (the opt-out gate first survived and needed the injected-tracker test).

Re-review of PR #84 on the latest push (1aaf5b6)

I read the code and the diff only. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, so I'm relying on the PR's stated gates.

What changed since my last review (71357e7): one commit, 1aaf5b6a. It only changes comments and JSDoc in launch.ts, system-events.ts and protocol/options.ts. No executable code changed.

Checks on this commit

  • Doc matches code. packages/browser/src/launch.ts:187 still has default: true with FAIL_CLOSED_BOOLEAN_OPTION. system-events.ts:236 and :248 still use ?? true. The new JSDoc says the protocol layer only defines the key and type, and the browser launch defaults to true. That is accurate, and it settles the "protocol default vs browser default" wording CodeRabbit raised.
  • Options doc consistency. The CaptureEnvironmentHints doc in options.ts says the WebView launch never enables it. That is consistent with webview/launch.ts, which passes detectPrivateMode: false.
  • Cosmetic only (no action needed). The reworded JSDoc lines at launch.ts:387 and options.ts:79 are 150–200 characters, against a Biome lineWidth of 100. Biome doesn't reflow comments, so lint won't fail. Other comments in these files already run past 100. You may want to re-wrap them for readability.

Earlier findings

Finding Status
Hints and permissions read with no consumer Fixed in 7b5b0a4 (observeHints / queryPermissions gates)
private_mode_detected re-emitted on every #attach() Fixed in 9b90260
CodeRabbit ×3: factory detectPrivateMode inheritance, stale permission on an unusable answer, probe failure streaks Fixed in 9d82b23
Stale "default false" docs, opt-out not enforced at the sink, changeset scope Fixed in 71357e7
A retained private: yes is not re-delivered to a new session (environment-tracker.ts:691) Still open, not repeated. See below.

On the open item: the code at environment-tracker.ts:691 still returns early for a retained yes or no. #settlePrivate emits only on change, so a stop → launch on the same window gives the new session no private_mode_detected. The header comment (:34-36, :47) now documents this as intended behavior. If the event is meant to be per session, the fix is still to re-deliver a retained yes on activation, or to read current().privateMode in the events source after subscribing. If it is meant to be per window lifetime, the doc is accurate and nothing needs to change. This is a P3 product decision, not a defect in the code as documented.

New findings

None.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. This push is documentation only. The change is additive and browser-only.
  2. Merge recommendation: Fine to merge. Decide the per-session vs per-window question for private_mode_detected here or in a follow-up.
  3. Most important item: the retained yes not being re-delivered on relaunch (P3, already reported).
  4. Positives:
    • The docs and the option definition now agree on one default, in one place.
    • The sink-level opt-out and the explicit tracker gates from earlier pushes are unchanged.
      · branch feat/environment-tracker

The tracker outlives sessions and never re-probes a retained answer, so later
sessions on the same window lost private_mode_detected. The events source now
emits it once on subscribe for a retained yes, honouring its own opt-out.

Re-review of PR #84 on the latest push (794573a)

I read the code and the diff only. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, so I'm relying on the PR's stated gates.

What changed since my last review (1aaf5b6): commit 08509d37 (plus a no-op merge, 794573a1). It makes BrowserSystemEventsSource re-deliver a retained private-mode yes to each new session. It touches system-events.ts, its tests and docs/PROGRESS.md. The tracker itself is unchanged.

Earlier open finding: fixed

The retained private: yes that was not re-delivered on relaunch (my P3 at environment-tracker.ts:691) is now handled in the events source (system-events.ts:142-177).

  • The source subscribes through onAny first, so activation-time emissions are not lost.
  • It then reads current().privateMode. If the retained answer is yes and this source's own #privateMode is on, it emits private_mode_detected once.
  • privateDelivered stops the same yes from being emitted twice if the activation also delivered it.
  • no and unknown stay silent.
  • An opted-out source reads undefined and never emits, so the sink-level opt-out from 71357e7 still holds.
  • current is optional on EnvironmentSource, so injected trackers without it are fine.
  • There is no re-probe. The tracker's restart behaviour and its tests are unchanged.

I traced these cases and found no problem:

  • Stop then launch on the same window: the new source's activation sees the retained yes and emits it once.
  • Stop then start of the same source instance: privateDelivered is local to each onActivate, so each activation delivers once.
  • Two sources on one window: each new subscriber gets its own delivery, which is the intended per-session behaviour.
  • Detection turned off on the shared tracker: rebind clears #private, so there is nothing stale to re-deliver.

New findings

One P3 doc nit, posted inline at system-events.ts:62. Two JSDoc blocks sit back to back, so BrowserSystemEventsEnv lost its doc. There is no behaviour impact.

Earlier findings: status

Finding Status
Hints and permissions read with no consumer Fixed in 7b5b0a4
private_mode_detected re-emitted on every #attach() Fixed in 9b90260
CodeRabbit ×3 (factory inheritance, stale permission, probe failure streaks) Fixed in 9d82b23
Stale default docs, opt-out at the sink, changeset scope Fixed in 71357e7 / 1aaf5b6
Retained yes not re-delivered to a new session Fixed in 08509d3
Empty first permissions snapshot emits permissions: {} (nit) Still there. Nothing consumes it, and permissions are now gated off by default.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low. The change is additive and browser-only, and the privacy opt-out is enforced at the sink.
  2. Merge recommendation: Fine to merge. The only open item is the doc nit above.
  3. Most important item: none. The doc nit is optional.
  4. Positives:
    • The fix sits in the events source, so the tracker's retained-state and epoch logic stays untouched.
    • The per-activation dedupe flag and the opt-out check are both covered by tests, including the case with an injected tracker.
    • The header comment still matches the tracker's actual behaviour.

Severity: P3 Low (doc only)

Problem: Two JSDoc blocks now sit back to back (/** Injected globals ... */ at line 60, then /** What the source needs from the environment tracker ... */ at line 61). The first one used to document BrowserSystemEventsEnv. The EnvironmentSource type was inserted between them, so BrowserSystemEventsEnv (line 65) lost its doc and EnvironmentSource has two.

Impact: No behaviour change. Hover docs for BrowserSystemEventsEnv are empty and the "Injected globals" text is attached to the wrong declaration.

Fix: Move the /** Injected globals (each defaults to the real global; an absent one is skipped). */ line down so it sits directly above export interface BrowserSystemEventsEnv.

Fixed in 7b01256: the 'Injected globals' JSDoc now sits on BrowserSystemEventsEnv, and EnvironmentSource keeps its own doc.

Re-review of PR #84 on the latest push (7b01256)

I read the code and the diff only. I did not run tests, lint or typecheck, so I'm relying on the PR's stated gates.

What changed since my last review (794573a): one commit, 7b01256e. It moves one JSDoc line in packages/browser/src/system-events.ts. The "Injected globals" doc now sits directly above BrowserSystemEventsEnv (line 64). EnvironmentSource keeps its own doc (line 60). No executable code changed.

Earlier findings

Finding Status
Two back-to-back JSDoc blocks, so BrowserSystemEventsEnv lost its doc (P3, system-events.ts:62) Fixed in 7b01256.

Still open, a nit and not repeated: an empty first permissions snapshot emits permissions: {} when every answered state is unusable and nothing is retained. Permissions are off by default and nothing consumes them, so there is no effect today.

New findings

None.

  2. Merge recommendation: Fine to merge. I have no open findings.

  4. Positives:
    • Every earlier finding was fixed with a targeted test.
    • The events-source fix left the tracker's retention and epoch logic untouched.
    • The docs, the option definition and the changeset now agree on one default.
