Summary

  • New PageLifecycleTracker is the single owner of the window/document lifecycle listeners (pagehide, visibilitychange, online, offline, orientationchange); attaches on first subscriber, releases on last, never throws into DOM dispatch.
  • The events source and the Connection/Orientation trackers subscribe to it instead of attaching their own listeners (back-compat when no lifecycle is injected).
  • Browser and webview launches create one tracker and share it (webview listener count on the window: 6 → 3).
  • Browser launch now passes the document, so process_foreground/process_background are captured there too.

Design: docs/design/system-traces-expansion.md §14.3/§14.5 (shared PageLifecycleTracker).

Stacked on #62 — base is feat/browser-trackers; will be retargeted to main once #62 merges.

Verification

  • Tests first, mutator loop run per changed entity (no surviving mutations), pnpm ci:local green (e2e runs in CI).
  • Local Opus review: no real findings; its test-gap findings (consumer-throw reporting, events-source reactivation, release on stop) are covered.

…connection/orientation traces

One tracker owns the window/document lifecycle listeners (pagehide, visibilitychange, online,
offline, orientationchange); the events source and the connection/orientation trackers subscribe
to it. Browser and webview launches create one and share it. The browser launch now passes the
document, so foreground/background events are captured there too.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Browser and WebView clients now share page lifecycle monitoring across system events and traces, reducing duplicate event listeners.
    • Browser clients capture foreground and background events when the page’s visibility changes.
    • Exported a page lifecycle tracker for use in browser integrations.

Browser and WebView launches now create one PageLifecycleTracker and share it with system-event and trace producers. The tracker owns window and document lifecycle listeners, normalizes lifecycle event data, and reports caught errors through an optional callback. System events, connection tracking, and orientation tracking subscribe to the shared tracker when provided. The browser package exports the tracker and its related types.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to db538

Lifecycle dispatch can throw if the configured error handler also throws. Guard the error handler; otherwise, the change is mergeable with awareness of this limited risk.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to db538

The change remains within browser lifecycle observation and does not establish a new privileged access path. Normal subscription cleanup is preserved. However, a throwing application error callback can interrupt the newly shared dispatch and prevent other lifecycle consumers from receiving an event.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Shared dispatch makes lifecycle failure containment depend on the application error callback not throwing. If a connection or orientation consumer fails and reporting also throws, emitter dispatch stops before later subscribers; the tracker guard invokes the same unprotected reporter and can throw into DOM dispatch. The reporting pattern predates this PR, but centralization can now suppress other lifecycle consumers that previously had independent DOM listeners. The default absent reporter and the emitter's documented non-throwing-callback precondition limit exposure; no privilege escalation is established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected shared failure domain is one launch's lifecycle-dependent capture consumers within the host page. The traced flow reaches system-event and trace capture, not a newly introduced tenant, service, credential, or native-control boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Lifecycle notifications are observational inputs, not authenticated commands. Custom lifecycle implementations and error callbacks remain trusted application-supplied code; the inspected change does not establish a remote attacker-controlled injection path or grant those dependencies additional privileged authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inherited emitter documents that reporting callbacks must not throw, while public launch options describe onError only as an internal-error sink. The repository also contains a host-boundary helper that contains failures from reporting sinks. This is material counterevidence and an available containment pattern for the shared-dispatch concern.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use a non-throwing reporting wrapper consistently for both inherited emitter reporting and tracker guards, so a failing application error sink cannot defeat per-consumer isolation or escape DOM dispatch.

Contain onError failures in PageLifecycleTracker.

PageLifecycleTracker passes the raw callback to InterceptorBase, and #guard calls the same raw callback after catching an event or subscriber failure. MultiKeyEmitterBase also invokes its error callback without guarding it. If onError throws, the callback can run again from #guard, and that second throw can leave the DOM listener. Wrap the reporter before passing it to super and use the wrapped reporter in both tracker catch paths.
