Reports showed 0.0.0/0 unless appVersion/appBuild were passed explicitly; no runtime detected anything.

  • core: resolveAppIdentity (explicit option wins, then sources in order, one warning if no version) and bundledAppIdentity (reads __BUGSEE_APP_VERSION__ / __BUGSEE_APP_BUILD__).
  • node/bun/deno: env (BUGSEE_APP_VERSION, npm_package_version), nearest package.json; build from BUGSEE_APP_BUILD or CI commit vars.
  • electron: app.getVersion() via the injected app.
  • browser/webworker/vercel-edge/cloudflare: build-time constants; browser also <meta name="bugsee:app-version|app-build">; vercel-edge build from VERCEL_GIT_COMMIT_SHA.
  • vite/webpack/esbuild/rspack plugins: same resolution (option, env, package.json, CI vars) and inject the constants only when a real value exists, so runtime and source-map upload agree. Behaviour change: CI commit vars now also feed the upload's appBuild.

Local ci:local --e2e passes. Known gaps: no e2e on the uploaded bundle's environment.app.version; launch-main.ts is 89.3% branch on its own.

Deep review: app identity detection

The PR does what it says: reports no longer have to be 0.0.0/0 just because appVersion/appBuild were omitted. The resolver shape (explicit wins, sources fill gaps, throws are contained, placeholders are not baked) is the right one, and the Vite/webpack/esbuild define path plus Electron app.getVersion() chaining are well tested.

The remaining bugs are all join-key bugs. Source maps, build registration, and the running SDK are supposed to agree on environment.app.version / app.build. Several paths in this change make them disagree, or silently skip the new detection.

Findings

P2 — blank plugin options are treated as found (packages/bundler-plugin-core/src/app-identity.ts:90)

findAppIdentity uses ??, so appVersion: '' / appBuild: '' win, skip package.json and CI SHAs, upload as '' ('' ?? '0.0.0' is still ''), and bake "". Runtime usable() then rejects the empty constant, so the app reports 0.0.0. The common process.env.BUGSEE_APP_VERSION || '' plugin config triggers this.

P2 — identity is resolved from projectRoot / cwd at plugin construction, not from the bundler root (packages/bundler-plugin-core/src/app-identity.ts:94)

projectRoot is documented as the VCS repository root. Reusing it (else process.cwd() at factory time) as the package.json walk start means a monorepo build from the workspace root, or a config that set projectRoot to the git root, labels maps and bakes __BUGSEE_APP_VERSION__ from the workspace package, not the app. registerJsBuild already walks from outDir for package_id for this reason; version detection does not.

P2 — Node and the bundler disagree on a versionless package.json (packages/node/src/app-identity-source.ts:67 vs packages/bundler-plugin-core/src/app-identity.ts:61)

The plugin stops at the nearest package.json even with no version (so a monorepo app is not labelled with the workspace version). Node skips versionless files and keeps walking. A bundled Node/Electron service then registers maps as 0.0.0 / 0 while the process reports the workspace version — symbolication fallback by version/build misses.

P2 — the missing-version warning advertises an env var most web/edge runtimes never read (packages/core/src/app-identity.ts:64, packages/vercel-edge/src/app-identity.ts:9)

Every platform shares “set BUGSEE_APP_VERSION”. Browser and webworker cannot see process env at runtime. Vercel Edge can (process.env is populated from project env), but vercelAppIdentity only reads VERCEL_GIT_COMMIT_SHA and never BUGSEE_APP_VERSION / BUGSEE_APP_BUILD. Following the warning leaves reports at 0.0.0.

Overall risk: Medium

Merge recommendation: Request changes

Fix the blank-option gate and the plugin walk root before merge; those two are enough to ship the wrong release id. Align the two package.json walkers and make the warning (and Vercel Edge) actually honour BUGSEE_APP_VERSION.

Most important to fix

  1. Treat blank appVersion/appBuild options like blank env (unset), and do not bake or upload ''.
  2. Resolve plugin identity from the bundler project root (Vite root, webpack context), not VCS projectRoot / factory cwd.
  3. One package.json walk policy for plugin and Node.
  4. Warning + Vercel Edge should read BUGSEE_APP_VERSION where process.env exists; browser warning should mention the plugin / meta tags, not a process env var.

What works

Explicit options beat every source. Throwing sources and a throwing warn sink cannot break launch. The plugin does not bake the 0.0.0/0 placeholders when a value is truly missing, and it never overrides a user define / DefinePlugin key. Electron merges app.getVersion() field-by-field behind a caller appIdentitySource. appIdentitySource is on RELAUNCH_KEPT_OPTIONS. Precedence tests exist on Node, browser, edge, worker, Electron, and bun/deno.

… walk policy, per-runtime warning hints

- Blank or whitespace-only appVersion/appBuild plugin options count as unset and fall through
- Plugin resolves identity from the bundler's project directory (Vite root, webpack context, esbuild absWorkingDir; output directory for Rollup); projectRoot stays VCS-only; the define and the upload share one resolution
- One pure nearest-package.json walker in @bugsee/core, used by node and the plugin; a versionless nearest manifest means no version
- resolveAppIdentity takes a per-runtime hint for the missing-version warning
- vercel-edge/cloudflare read BUGSEE_APP_VERSION / BUGSEE_APP_BUILD from the environment

Deep review: app identity detection (re-review at e98eb47)

e98eb477 closed the first-round join-key bugs. Blank plugin options now fall through, identity is resolved from the bundler project directory (not VCS projectRoot), Node and the plugin share findNearestPackageVersion (stop at a versionless nearest manifest), the missing-version warning is per-runtime, and Vercel Edge / Cloudflare read BUGSEE_APP_VERSION / BUGSEE_APP_BUILD.

The remaining bugs are still join-key bugs: the comment at plugin.ts says one resolution feeds both the baked constants and the upload, and two paths still make those disagree.

Findings

P2 — a user define / DefinePlugin of __BUGSEE_APP_VERSION__ is skipped for bake but not for upload (packages/bundler-plugin-core/src/plugin.ts)

Vite/esbuild/webpack leave a key the user already defined alone (correct for the bundle) and still upload findAppIdentity's package.json / env value. The runtime SDK then reports the user's constant. That is the documented escape hatch (browser README: "define those two constants yourself") and the usual way to override a wrong auto-detect.

P2 — Rollup uploads a detected version and never bakes it (packages/bundler-plugin-core/src/plugin.ts)

bugseeRollupPlugin runs writeBundle → forOutput(outDir) so maps/registration get the nearest package.json version, but there is no Rollup define / @rollup/plugin-replace. The running app stays at 0.0.0. Webpack 4 (compiler.webpack absent → injectDefines no-ops) has the same bake gap on a path that still uploads.

Overall risk: Medium

Merge recommendation: Request changes

The Vite / webpack 5 / esbuild bake path and the Node/browser/edge resolvers are in good shape after the fix commit. Do not merge until bake and upload cannot disagree on the two paths above — that is the whole point of this PR.

Most important to fix

  1. If a user already defined __BUGSEE_APP_VERSION__ / __BUGSEE_APP_BUILD__, use that value for upload/registration too (parse a JSON string literal), or require appVersion on the plugin when skipping the bake.
  2. Bake the same constants from Rollup (and webpack 4 if that path is still supported) that writeBundle uploads.

What works

Prior P2s are gone: appVersion: '' / ' ' fall through; Vite config.root / webpack context / esbuild absWorkingDir drive both define and upload; a versionless nearest manifest is a miss on Node and the plugin; browser warning names the plugin and meta tags, not BUGSEE_APP_VERSION; Edge reads the env vars the warning names. Explicit launch options still beat every source. Throwing sources and a throwing warn sink cannot break launch. Electron still merges app.getVersion() field-by-field behind a caller appIdentitySource.

P2 — skipping a user define for bake but not for upload desyncs maps from the running app.

forOutput always labels the upload with resolveIdentity (option / BUGSEE_APP_VERSION / nearest package.json). This filter (and the esbuild spread / webpack injectDefines taken set) then refuses to bake that same value when the user already defined the key. Runtime bundledAppIdentity() reads the user's constant; maps and registerJsBuild keep the plugin's.

Scenario: Vite config has define: { __BUGSEE_APP_VERSION__: JSON.stringify('2.4.1') } because auto-detect would see a workspace 0.0.0 (or because the README says you can set the constant yourself), plus bugseeVitePlugin({ appToken }) for maps. The page reports 2.4.1; the upload/registration go up as 0.0.0. Debug-id-primary still works; the version/build fallback this PR exists to feed does not.

The comment on identityFromRoot ("ONE resolution per build feeds both … so the two cannot disagree") is false on this path. plugin.define.test.ts pins the skip and never asserts the uploaded version.

Fix: when a user define for __BUGSEE_APP_VERSION__ / __BUGSEE_APP_BUILD__ is present, treat a JSON string literal as the identity for upload too. If the value is an expression you cannot parse, do not upload a different auto-detected version — require appVersion / appBuild on the plugin.

P2 — Rollup uploads the detected version and never injects __BUGSEE_APP_VERSION__.

Vite/esbuild/webpack/rspack all call identityFromRoot and bake. Rollup only has writeBundle → forOutput(outDir), which walks from the output directory and labels maps/registration. There is no Rollup define / replace plugin, so the bundle still has the free identifier, typeof __BUGSEE_APP_VERSION__ is not 'string', and the SDK reports 0.0.0 (and warns).

Scenario: bugseeRollupPlugin({ appToken }) on a library/app with package.json "version": "2.4.1" and output.dir = 'dist'. Upload appVersion is 2.4.1 (plugin.identity-root.test.ts asserts that). The running SDK is 0.0.0. The docs table says a real plugin value "is also baked into the bundle, so the app's SDK reports it" — false for this documented entry point.

Webpack 4 is the same class of bug: injectDefines returns immediately when compiler.webpack is missing, but afterEmit still uploads the detected version.

Fix: inject the same identityDefines on Rollup (@rollup/plugin-replace or a renderChunk replace) from the same ResolvedIdentity forOutput uses. Either bake on webpack 4 too or stop auto-filling appVersion on that path.

…ports (user define, Rollup, webpack 4)

- A version/build the user defines themselves (Vite/esbuild define, a DefinePlugin) is now the identity
for the upload and registration too when it is a JSON string literal. An expression we cannot read
restricts the field to explicit values (option / BUGSEE_APP_*): a different auto-detected value is
  never uploaded in its place.
- Rollup had no define step, so the SDK reported 0.0.0 while maps were labelled with the detected
version. renderChunk now bakes the constants into each chunk (magic-string, hires source map) from the
same per-output-directory identity the upload uses.
- webpack 4 / an Rspack without a DefinePlugin cannot bake, so there only explicit values are recorded
instead of the package.json / CI value the bundle will never report.
- Docs corrected; real-Rollup e2e added.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • App version and build are detected automatically across supported runtimes from configured values, build-time metadata, environment variables, package versions, or CI commit IDs where available.
    • Supported bundler builds can include detected identity values while preserving user-defined values.
    • When no version is available, reports use version 0.0.0 and build 0, and a warning is shown.
  • Documentation
    • Added and updated guidance on identity sources, precedence, defaults, and bundler support.

Launch paths now resolve application version and build from explicit options and runtime-specific sources. Node adds an appIdentitySource option and package-version lookup. Bundler plugins resolve identity for uploads and inject available values into supported bundles, including Rollup chunk rewriting with source maps. Tests and documentation cover source precedence, fallbacks, and bundler behavior.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d4cc2

This change adds app version and build detection across runtimes and bundlers, with explicit options taking precedence. The earlier concerns about repeat launches and whitespace handling appear to be fixed, so no merge-blocking risk is evident.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d4cc2

Automatic version detection is largely metadata-only, but one bundle-rewriting path can interpret identity text as executable code. Exploitation would require influence over build metadata; externally reachable attacker control has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Rollup identity baking replaces matching text without distinguishing identifier expressions from string contents. Consequently, JSON-encoded identity metadata can escape its data-only role when inserted into an existing quoted string. The browser diagnostic hint contains such a token inside single quotes. If a build accepts attacker-influenced identity text containing an apostrophe, the generated bundle can contain an injected statement. Deployment-specific attacker access to these metadata sources remains unproven.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The introduced code-rewriting concern is scoped to Rollup-generated chunks containing matching identity-token text. If the conditional injection succeeds and that bundle is deployed, the statement executes with the consuming application's JavaScript authority. Influence over a build identity source is required; ordinary page visitors have not been shown to possess that capability.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A concrete conditional path is BUGSEE_APP_VERSION to findAppIdentity, then JSON.stringify, then raw replacement inside the browser hint's single-quoted text. A value such as ';globalThis.identityInjected=true;// would close that string and introduce a statement if the rendered hint preserves its source quoting. This follows from source inspection; it was not executed, and deployment-specific attacker control remains unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Generated identity definitions use JSON string encoding, and the other inspected bundler hooks preserve user-defined keys. Those controls counter direct expression substitution and configuration override risks. Rollup's regular expression, however, checks only neighboring characters and has no lexical distinction between executable identifiers and quoted text.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Upload coordination still joins an in-flight run by output-directory string and releases that entry after either success or failure. The same mechanism already existed at the supplied base, including its lack of canonical-path or tenant-aware ownership keys. No PR-introduced exposure increase from that mechanism was established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make Rollup identity substitution syntax-aware and restrict it to genuine free identifier expressions, leaving strings, comments, declarations, and property names untouched.

…plicit values, resolve after the singleton check (CodeRabbit)

- A whitespace-only explicit appVersion/appBuild is a stray newline, not a choice: it now falls through to
detection (an explicit empty string stays an explicit choice, a padded non-blank value is kept as given).
- Padding is trimmed where it is read — browser <meta> content, Node environment values, Vercel Edge
environment values — and not in the resolver, so a build-time constant stays byte-for-byte what the
bundler plugin uploaded. A blank meta attribute is no value.
- node launch() resolved the identity before the singleton check, so a repeat call re-read package.json
and warned about the missing version again although the call is ignored; it now resolves after it.
