Deep review: persist-by-default
Intent is right: the rolling capture window and the report queue should survive a reload, matching mobile, and
persist: falseis a clean opt-out. The default flip itself is a product decision, not a bug.The implementation of that default reintroduces a fail-closed hole this repo already closed on the worker tier, and the “IndexedDB available → persist” probe is presence-only, which is not the fallback the README describes.
Findings

packages/browser/src/launch.ts:586-588—options.persist ?? availabilitytreats'false','true',1,nullas persist ON.@bugsee/webworkeralready hit this (launch.test.tsliterally documents that??made'false'write capture to IndexedDB) and reads=== undefinedplusFAIL_CLOSED_BOOLEAN_OPTION. Core already exportsresolveFailClosedBooleanfor a default-ON collector.option-directions.test.tsstill classifiesbrowser:persistasread === trueand has nocheckpattern, so this landed unguarded.- P2 same probe /
packages/browser/README.md:26— availability isindexedDB != null. A present-but-failing IndexedDB (quota, some sandboxes) does not fall back to memory: launch builds the durable chunk store, writes fail intoonError, and after the circuit opens capture is dropped. AccessingglobalThis.indexedDBis also unguarded and can throw, failinglaunch().New tests cover default-on, injected factory, opt-out, and missing IndexedDB. They do not cover invalid
persistvalues or a present-but-broken factory.Overall risk: Medium
Merge recommendation: Request changes
Do not merge until persist is fail-closed on invalid values the way the worker already is. The presence-only IndexedDB probe should at least stop throwing out of
launch(), and the README should not claim a memory fallback that the code does not implement.Most important to fix
- Resolve persist like the worker: absent → IndexedDB probe; boolean
true/falsewin; anything else is OFF and reported.- Guard the IndexedDB probe; do not claim operational fallback until launch actually degrades to the memory store when open/write fails.
Positive
Small, focused diff. Default-on / injected-factory / opt-out / no-IndexedDB tests are the right shape.
durableCapturestill respects an explicitcaptureStore, and dedicated workers are correctly left memory-only. Dead-sibling recovery withskipReportIdsis already in place, so turning persist on by default does not re-open the old double-upload window.Sent by Cursor Automation: Bugsee code review

Prior findings are addressed.
cc4853ecopies the worker persist read: absent → IndexedDB presence probe; booleantrue/falsewin; anything else is OFF and reported viaFAIL_CLOSED_BOOLEAN_OPTION. The probe is try/caught. Tests cover invalid values, a throwing getter, and memory mode viagetService(BundleStoreToken)rather than a 20 ms timeout. The README now states the real rule (presence check, write failures go toonError, no memory swap).
option-directions.test.tsRAW_STRICT entries forbrowser:/electron:/bugsee:/nuxt:persistare gone; persist is a normalised fail-closed definition, which is the stronger pin.No remaining P0–P3.
Overall risk: Low
Merge recommendation: Approve
Residual (accepted, documented): a present IndexedDB that later cannot commit still drops captures on the durable backend rather than falling back to memory. That matches the persist:true path this default now takes, and the README no longer claims otherwise.

Delta since cc4853e is test-only:
RelaunchedAfterCrashwaits up to 1.5s for the event instead of a fixed 50 ms (silence cases run out the clock). Does not change persist defaults, the fail-closed read, or the IndexedDB probe.Prior P1/P2s remain fully addressed. No remaining P0–P3.

Prior findings stay addressed. cc4853e still fail-closes invalid persist values, try/catches the IndexedDB getter, and the README describes presence-only (write failures go to onError). 3d64c55 replaces the fixed 50 ms recovery wait with a bounded wait for RelaunchedAfterCrash.
The new default still has one substrate hole the previous rounds did not cover.

packages/browser/src/launch.ts:601-604— persist-by-default probes IndexedDB presence only. Dead-sibling recovery and reclamation run only insiderecoverIfDead, which is a no-op whennavigator.locksis missing. On those origins the new default writes up tomaxDataSize(10 MB) per launch, never restores the rolling window after a reload, and never deletes the previous prefix. README line 24 still claims reload/restart survival.
Overall risk: Medium
Merge recommendation: Request changes
Do not merge until the default-on probe also requires Web Locks (or another reclamation path exists for the no-locks degrade). Otherwise persist-by-default is a quota leak with no product benefit on every origin where locks are absent.
Most important to fix
- Default persist on only when IndexedDB is present and
navigator.locks(oroptions.locks) is available. Keeppersist: trueas an explicit opt-in to the documented no-locks degrade. Cover the no-locks default with a test that does not injectfakeWebLocks().
Positive
Fail-closed invalid values, the throwing-getter guard, and the worker-shaped read are in good shape. Default-on / injected-factory / opt-out / missing-IDB tests are the right matrix. 3d64c55 is the right way to wait for recovery. CI lint/typecheck/coverage and e2e are green. Related (not blocking): @bugsee/electron launchRenderer still does not pin persist: false after the caller options, so every renderer window now opens an unused bundle IndexedDB; main already owns durability.
Prior threads: P1 ??, P2 unguarded probe/README, and the test-gap thread remain fully_addressed.

P2 Medium — persist-by-default probes IndexedDB presence, but reload survival and prefix GC both require Web Locks.
Problem: When options.persist is absent this becomes indexedDB != null (or an injected factory). That turns on createCoexistence({ persist, captureRecovery: durableCapture }), which writes the rolling window (up to maxDataSize, default 10 MB) under a fresh instanceId every launch. The only code that ever reads or deletes a previous launch's prefix is recoverDeadSiblings → liveness.recoverIfDead. With no navigator.locks (and no options.locks), createWebLockLiveness(undefined) sets recoverIfDead to () => Promise.resolve() (packages/browser-utils/src/web-lock-liveness.ts:49). The scan still discovers sibling ids; it never runs the callback, so nothing is recovered and nothing is swept. cleanOtherGenerations cannot help: self's prefix is empty by construction (launch.ts comment at 650–651).
This was an accepted degrade for explicit persist: true (design BD6). Making it the unattended default is new. The README (packages/browser/README.md:24) still says the recent past survives a reload or a browser restart; without locks it does not — the next launch starts an empty namespace and leaves the old 10 MB in origin quota forever.
Impact: IndexedDB quota is origin-scoped and shared with the host app. Ten reloads is ~100 MB of dead SDK data, after which the page's own IDB writes start failing. The host gets the storage cost of persist and none of the crash-delivery benefit. Default onError is a no-op, so the one-time WEB_LOCKS_UNAVAILABLE_WARNING is swallowed.
Scenario: launch(token) on a non-secure http:// origin (navigator.locks is [SecureContext]), Safari < 15.4, or an embedded WebView without locks. IndexedDB is still an object, so persist turns on. Reload. Previous capture/markers/bundles stay under the dead instanceId. Repeat. The new default-on tests always pass locks: fakeWebLocks(), so this path is not covered.
Fix: Treat locks the same way as IndexedDB in the absent-option probe:
const persist =
options.persist === undefined
? (options.indexedDB !== undefined || indexedDbPresent()) &&
(options.locks !== undefined || navigatorLocksPresent())
: resolved.options.get<boolean>(PERSIST_OPTION_KEY, false);persist: true can still opt into the documented no-locks degrade. Add a default-on test with IndexedDB present and navigator.locks absent that asserts memory mode (getService(BundleStoreToken) throws) rather than injecting fakeWebLocks().
…e navigator.locks read Reload survival and the sweep of a previous launch's prefix both run through the liveness lock (recoverIfDead is a no-op without it), so persisting by default on an IndexedDB-only page (non-secure http, Safari < 15.4, some WebViews) stranded up to maxDataSize per reload in the origin's shared quota and never recovered it. The default now also requires options.locks or navigator.locks; an explicit persist:true still opts into the documented no-locks degrade. README corrected. createCoexistence read navigator.locks unguarded, so a throwing getter (sandboxed frame) failed launch even with persistence off; it now degrades like absent locks. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code)

The rolling capture window and report queue were in memory unless
persist: truewas passed, so a reload lost the last minute of context. They now go to IndexedDB by default wherever it is available;persist: falseopts out and a runtime without IndexedDB falls back to memory.Existing tests that assumed in-memory now pass
persist: false; new tests cover default-on (global and injected IndexedDB), opt-out and no-IndexedDB.Not changed: Web Workers (dedicated workers still default to memory; Service Workers already persist the bundle queue).
