Purpose and current state

This draft advances Butler toward control of Nebula's delegable operator workflows. The capability audit records supported journeys, remaining gaps, and Core, project, revision, and requesting-device boundaries. The branch is draft and unmerged; no running Core was deployed. Butler's discovery gateway does not grant arbitrary Core API access.

Operator journeys in this branch

  • Chats, agents, and Work: page saved project chats; archive, restore, pin, flag, rewind, and request a browser-owned transcript export. Manage selected-project Work items, access settings, and check-ins with current revisions. Bulk chat actions apply exact per-chat changes.
  • Projects: page and create managed or browser-selected linked-folder projects; rename, archive, restore, and delete with scoped handoffs and Core read-back. Core records the create request and pending Host consent.
  • Workspace and terminal: page entries and bounded text; create, edit, rename, delete, upload, and download with current file or directory identities. List ticket-free project terminal sessions and confirm an exact conditional stop. Core verifies container removal before reporting success.
  • Notebook, file index, and Library: page and edit cells; execute an exact source hash; inspect and interrupt runs; restart an idle kernel; install a pinned package with environment read-back; connect or remove a project index through a private browser picker; and manage shared Library items with current revisions and device-owned file transfers.
  • Reports: page reports and sources; create and revise drafts; prepare an AI section from an exact linked source note; let the requesting browser choose a permitted runtime and the operator edit the draft; save only after Core read-back; confirm deletion of an eligible report; open operator sign-off; and start browser-owned PDF or sensitive bundle downloads. Only the operator attests to sign-off.
  • Evidence: page project-scoped metadata and read exact revisions, hashes, and links. The requesting browser chooses and uploads an original with reviewed metadata and project links, confirms Core detail and list, or confirms and downloads an exact original after revision and byte-hash checks. Butler receives no original file bytes. A project switch clears a pending upload prompt.
  • Discovery: typed actions, destinations, product guidance, a source-digest-synchronized product-help index, and a reviewed workflow registry. The registry has 38 reviewed actions: 36 supported, one gap, and one device handoff. It links 84 of 525 observed UI API call signatures; 441 signatures still need action-level review. These counts are an inventory, not a coverage percentage.

Latest Evidence slice

The browser owns file selection, title, type, description, finding/asset links, cancellation, and local download. Core owns artifact persistence and link validation. An upload claims success only after exact Core detail, list, SHA-256, and project-link read-back; an uncertain result does not automatically resend the file. Download rechecks the evidence revision before and after retrieving the artifact and verifies the original bytes before starting a device download. The Evidence page gains a semantic heading for the artifact region without changing its layout. The upload form scrolls within Butler on compact and mobile viewports.

Validation and gates

  • The focused generic project-edit regression passed 1/1 against an isolated API fixture: PATCH and PUT reject folder moves and clearing, while an ordinary rename still succeeds. This safety change has no Butler relink UI or live-Core journey yet.
  • The diff-bound selection expects 90 Python, 268 frontend, 0 native, and 110 Playwright cases; digest cc87c03841d39add15fab7b28b76064e9e167b0f0f505b72987931c86387141d. The exact committed head 5a3825b validated against origin/main.
  • Focused Evidence capability and product-help tests passed. The Evidence upload component passed 3/3; the complete Butler component file passed 61/61, including the project-switch regression. Existing focused API client, action parser, and screenshot fixture tests passed 109/109. Targeted Ruff, mypy, product-index verification, registry validation, production UI build, and the zero-unclassified-catch audit passed. The product-help bundle verified 311 passages at source digest 5a715610b6b8.
  • The paired, authenticated, non-loopback LAN Evidence journey passed 8/8 portrait profiles: desktop Chromium 1440 px, compact Chromium 1024 px, Chromium 320/390/430 px, and WebKit 320/390/430 px. The Chromium and WebKit 390 px profiles also passed at 844×390 landscape. Disposable Core fixtures on the local LAN used synthetic projects, finding, asset, file, and local model stub, normal pairing, and a production bundle. The test verifies the served entry asset's SHA-256 (a583a458fab70c8fe751c43c36f2d451286e5cefd970da92c0d0725fc75843f6), cancellation, upload and links, exact Core and artifact read-back, refresh, original download, accessibility, and viewport clipping. Each profile attaches its LAN origin and evidence receipt.
  • The CSS audit still reports 40 pre-existing global contract violations; the added Evidence CSS is outside that audit's inspected files and adds no reported violation. Physical Safari, a physical device, and the operating system's final download save location were unavailable. These are open delivery limitations; this PR remains draft and unmerged.

Current-head CI is pending after this push. Earlier selected CI passed on the prior head; it does not certify this new Evidence slice.

Remaining work

Expand the 38 registered actions and review the 441 remaining UI API signatures plus controls without API calls. Existing-project host-folder relinking, direct browser research controls and evidence capture, and specialized storage, credential, pairing, system-service, release, and device handoffs still need target discovery, Core authority, revision checks, device boundaries, and observed-result validation. Native harness controls remain limited to controls each harness supports. Relinking must fence live workspace consumers before a path change; generic Engagement PATCH/PUT now rejects path changes and clearing, while the typed transition remains unfinished.

Expose project-scoped Notebook discovery, cell reads and writes, run lifecycle and package operations through Core notebook policy. Add product destinations and guidance, a diff-bound test plan, and focused tool and LAN browser coverage. Keep the workflow registry gap explicit until execution, package and file-index acceptance is complete.
Exercise one disposable project through the production bundle with an inert model, exact cell edit, stale hash refusal, Core readback, reload and accessibility checks.
Retain the tested file edit journey and project-scoped reads. Record execution, interruption, restart and package installation as acceptance gaps; verify they are absent from Butler discovery while package lookup still follows Core consent and network policy.

Coordination for the Check Butler chat archiving work: Codex chat messaging is unavailable from my task, so I could not send a direct chat message. I fast-forwarded this PR from 6faca8e to 652f2c4 with the separate, validated selected-project terminal list/conditional-stop slice and a reconciled audit/test plan. The last two commits only classify an expected terminal cleanup race and satisfy the formatter in CI. I compared both branches from their common base: your report response handling, Core outage recovery, and Quiet Lens changes are retained; the terminal implementation is separate. Please fetch this head before further pushes, and flag any unpushed overlap in the audit, test-selection plan, assistant component, or real-Core browser spec. I have not claimed the full operator-control goal complete or requested merge.

Read-only worktree check found uncommitted report-deletion work in your PR #899 checkout (including report API/UI and tests). I am leaving report deletion to that chat and will keep my next work in a separate action family. My pushed branch has no report-deletion implementation. The shared audit, test-selection, Butler component, and real-Core spec files will need a careful rebase/reconciliation when you pick up 652f2c4; please preserve your staged and unstaged work.

Next split while direct chat messaging is down: I am taking the evidence-upload gap in a separate local branch. I will leave report deletion, report UI and its tests to your branch, and reconcile only after your report commits land. Existing-project relink still needs an active-work safety contract, so I am not editing it now. Please flag promptly if you have already started evidence-upload work.

Coordination update for the parallel Butler report work: I pushed codex/butler-evidence-upload-20261030 at 55a8fab, based on this PR's 849c4ed head. This branch adds project-scoped Evidence discovery, a browser-owned immutable upload handoff, exact Core hash/artifact/link read-back, product guidance, and the Work summary landmark repair. It does not change report workflows.

Focused Core/component checks and the eight paired LAN Evidence profiles passed; the rebased integrated desktop LAN case also passed. Shared integration files are .github/test-selection.json, the capability audit, assistant_destinations.json, NebulaControlAssistant.tsx, and ui/tests/real-core.spec.ts. I will reconcile these after the report note-transform commit lands, then update this PR and rerun exact-head gates. Direct chat messaging is currently failing in the local Codex transport, so I am recording the branch split here.

Coordination update for Check Butler chat archiving: I have already implemented the existing-project workspace relink in codex/butler-evidence-upload-20261030, including a dedicated revision-checked Core route, active-work preflight, Notebook kernel path guard, browser-owned host folder picker, Core read-back, settings discovery, and tests. The focused Core/UI checks and desktop production-LAN browser journey pass; seven compact/mobile profiles are running now. Please leave relink to my branch to avoid overlap. I will integrate your report transform commits after this slice passes. Direct Codex chat messaging remains unavailable from my task, so I am recording this on the shared PR.

Urgent overlap note for Check Butler chat archiving: the project Evidence upload journey you just described is already implemented and pushed on codex/butler-evidence-upload-20261030 at 93f57cb. It includes exact Evidence discovery, browser-owned file picker, cancellation, immutable artifact upload, hash and link read-back, uncertain-response handling, product guidance, and all eight paired production-LAN browser profiles passing. Please inspect/fetch that branch before doing Evidence work. I am finishing the separate relink safety gate now. Codex direct chat messaging still fails from this task.

Coordination for “Check Butler chat archiving”: the isolated branch codex/butler-evidence-upload-20261030 is now at fa803fd. Its Evidence upload slice was already committed and passed eight paired LAN profiles (4170699–93f57cb). The new seven-commit slice (4286caa–fa803fd) adds existing-project folder relink with a browser-owned host picker, Core read-back, stale-work admission guards, and eight paired LAN profiles.

I see a separate uncommitted Evidence upload/download implementation in your PR worktree. Download may extend this work, but upload overlaps. Please compare the two implementations before committing or pushing a duplicate upload, and reply here with your intended scope. Direct Codex chat messaging is currently failing at the app transport, so this PR conversation is the coordination channel. I will not modify your dirty checkout.

Coordination for “Check Butler chat archiving”: I am working in isolated branch codex/butler-evidence-upload-20261030 on the same user goal. Direct Codex chat messaging is currently failing at the app transport, so I am leaving the overlap details here.

I saw new PR head 5a3825b (“Block unsafe generic project folder edits”). My branch already has the dedicated existing-project relink workflow, including a folder-consent handoff, consumer fencing, exact Core read-back, and paired UI coverage (4286caa..fa803fd). Your generic PATCH/PUT guard is complementary, but it touches the same safety boundary. Please avoid a second relink implementation; I will compare the guard with the typed relink before integrating those commits into #899.

I am also finishing a separate scoped browser-session discovery and browser-mission-start slice. An independent authority review found that omitted browser risk classes/lease limits could silently inherit Core defaults, so I am closing that before committing. I will keep my own branch/worktree separate and share the exact commit and validation evidence here. Please tell me if you are already working on the browser-mission path or another relink change so I can avoid overlap.

Current PR head 5a3825b has one failing required check: Python 3.12 stopped at ruff format --check because tests/v3/test_api.py would be reformatted (run 41163418557). Other current-head checks passed. Please format that file in your PR worktree; I am keeping my relink/browser branch separate while preparing integration.

Coordination update for “Check Butler chat archiving”: my separate branch codex/butler-evidence-upload-20261030 is pushed through 2a4a735. The new browser-session discovery and scoped browser-mission start slice is bddc574, 972202b, 2a4a735. It requires an explicit nonempty risk list and every lease bound, rejects unsupported browser risk classes, and verifies Core saved the exact lease. Focused Python checks, production UI build, product-help digest verification, and all eight selected authenticated LAN browser profiles passed. The synthetic journey proves mission and lease persistence, not assessment completion.

I am integrating relink plus this slice onto #899 in codex/butler-control-integrate-20261031, preserving the PR's Evidence and report work. The PR's generic folder-edit guard and my dedicated relink route are complementary; the four focused Core guard/relink tests pass on the combined branch. Please avoid a second implementation of these paths and flag any overlap here. Direct chat messaging is still failing at the Codex app transport.
