A machine whose network drops now reads offline within seconds instead of freezing what the window shows of it for two minutes, and a new conversation sent to it waits as a queued draft that starts by itself once it is back, or can be taken back.

a new conversation sent to an offline machine waits on its draft row, with a clock

what changed

  • A remote call that hears nothing for 3 s probes the socket, and the idle probe no longer waits for pending calls; a dead link is replaced within 13 s (ws-client.ts).
  • Every remote call asks for sliced answers, so a slow download keeps sending frames; cores without chunkedAnswers keep the old 120 s rule.
  • A draft on an offline machine takes Send: the prompt joins the draft's queue, kept on the device like the thread outbox (store/composer.svelte.ts).
  • The draft row shows a clock and the prompt; its menu gets Cancel the start, which puts the words back in the box (DraftRow.svelte, store/drafts.svelte.ts).
  • On reconnect each queued draft becomes its conversation, in order, and its queue becomes that thread's outbox; a draft on screen gives way to it.
  • threads.create takes clientRequestId: a repeat within an hour answers with the conversation already made (core/src/threads/creation-requests.ts, fake client too).
  • A failure that only says the machine went away is minor and fades, and a thread opened as the link died shows offline instead of a red error.
  • A probe waits behind what the client still uploads (past 64 KiB, at 32 KiB/s), and a call counts frames rather than milliseconds.
  • A start on its way cannot be deleted or cancelled; the thread outbox is written before the draft goes; a start with no answer retries after 15 s, not in a loop.
  • A retried start repeats its first project, worktree and incognito switches, and the receipt key covers every creation parameter.

to question

Creation receipts live in core memory for an hour: a core restart between a lost answer and the retry could make a second conversation. Durable receipts would need a journal table. Answers are sliced at 64 KiB, so a download slower than about 5 KiB/s can still read as a dead link.

Bundle size

The entry chunk grows by about 2.3 KB and the UI by about 6.3 KB: the queued-draft launcher (store/draft-launch.svelte.ts) runs from the store every window starts with, plus the draft row's queued states and their strings.

verified

  • bun test tests/e2e/machine-outage.test.ts: real cores behind a TCP relay that goes silent; offline under 16 s after the click, no red toast, queued draft, cancel, requeue, one conversation started on reconnect.
  • The same flow on the old client: the machine still read connected 75 s after the link died.
  • npx vitest run in packages/ui: 2327 tests pass; the new client and queued-draft tests fail on the old code (the unanswered-start one spins forever there).
  • A GPT-6.1 Sol review found 4 bugs (crash order, upload probe, delete during start, same-millisecond call); each has a test red before its fix.
  • bun test test/creation-requests.test.ts plus the draft and thread suites in packages/core: 70 pass; the new file fails without the receipts.
  • bun run check passes.
  • not verified: the installed Windows app over the real VPN, a physical phone. phone-net.test.ts "installed phone app is added with a pasted link" fails on this Linux runner on main too.

captures

Before: the machine read connected and the conversation stayed on "Loading" while its link was dead.

📝 Walkthrough

This pull request changes remote WebSocket health checks and adds device-side queuing for new-conversation drafts. Queued drafts start after reconnection, using request IDs to make repeated thread-creation requests idempotent.

Changes: Remote socket liveness

Layer / File(s) Summary
Frame-based remote socket checks
packages/ui/src/lib/ws-client-utils.ts, packages/ui/src/lib/ws-client.ts, packages/ui/src/lib/client.test.ts, docs/machines.md
Remote sockets use received-frame timing and a 10-second probe deadline. Calls on cores with sliced answers can trigger checks after 3 seconds without frames. Upload traffic can extend the deadline. Tests cover sliced answers, probes, uploads, and dropped calls.
Offline error classification
packages/ui/src/lib/store.svelte.ts, packages/ui/src/lib/store/threads.svelte.ts
Dropped and closed RPCs on unavailable connections are classified as offline minor errors and are not reported through normal failure handling.

Queued offline drafts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Idempotent thread creation
packages/contracts/src/threads.ts, packages/contracts/src/messages.ts, packages/core/src/threads/*, packages/ui/src/lib/fake-client/threads.ts, packages/core/test/creation-requests.test.ts
threads.create accepts an optional clientRequestId. Matching retries return the original conversation. Mismatched parameters are refused. Receipts expire, are capacity-limited, and are forgotten on core restart.
Local draft queue and status
packages/ui/src/components/Composer.svelte, packages/ui/src/components/ComposerQueue.svelte, packages/ui/src/components/DraftRow.svelte, packages/ui/src/lib/store/drafts.svelte.ts, packages/ui/src/lib/store/composer.svelte.ts, packages/ui/src/lib/strings/*, packages/ui/src/components/*.test.ts, packages/ui/src/lib/drafts.test.ts
A non-incognito draft can queue its prompt while its machine is unavailable. Draft entries show waiting, starting, or failed status. Users can cancel a queued start before it is in progress.
Reconnect launch and outbox adoption
packages/ui/src/lib/store/draft-launch.svelte.ts, packages/ui/src/lib/store/projects.svelte.ts, packages/ui/src/lib/queued-drafts.test.ts, tests/e2e/machine-outage.test.ts, docs/machines.md, docs/phone.md
When the connection is ready, DraftLaunch starts eligible drafts in queue order. It retries stalled requests with saved parameters, transfers queued requests to the created thread’s outbox, and updates the draft after persistence. Tests cover retries, cancellation, refusal handling, restart behavior, and machine outage.

This change makes a machine with a dead connection show as offline within seconds instead of leaving its conversations stuck loading, and it lets a new conversation sent while offline wait as a queued draft that starts on reconnect or can be taken back.

L413: Upload-allowance comment overstates the probe extension by the 64 KiB floor

A 2 MiB upload past the 64 KiB floor at 32 KiB/s is (2097152-65536)/32768 = 62 s, plus the 10 s probe deadline, as ws-client-utils.ts documents. The comment claims 64 s (74 s total), so a reader extending the 70 s wait to 73 s from the comment would see a failure at the real ~72 s deadline.

🟡 Minor · Restore OutboxRequest.start when reading the journal. · drafts.svelte.ts:571-577

packages/ui/src/lib/store/drafts.svelte.ts:571-577
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restore OutboxRequest.start when reading the journal.

savedInput persists the whole request through $state.snapshot(item.request). This includes the new start field. outboxRequest rebuilds the request from id, choice, queuedAt, failed and sent only. It drops start after a reload.

DraftLaunch.launchDraft then recomputes the start with startOf(draft). This breaks the documented rule that a retry asks for exactly what the first start asked for. The failure needs a changed draft project, worktree or incognito switch between the first start and the reload. A core that still holds the receipt then refuses the id as "already used for another conversation". The prompt shows as failed.

Validate and restore start in outboxRequest.

CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding on 59136cc0 (outboxRequest dropping start) is fixed in 5b7f8930: the journal restores a validated start (project id, worktree and incognito booleans). queued-drafts.test.ts asks once, moves the draft to another project, restarts the store and expects the retry to repeat the first ask; it fails without the restore.
