Refs #1461 (closed by hand after the live check and the reply).

The defect

In the S3 Quick Connect bucket picker, a bucket named KDE's Kate Settings showed as s Kate Settings, and a bucket KDE that does not exist was listed next to it. Typing the full name by hand connected, so only discovery was wrong.

quick-xml hands element text over in pieces around each entity reference. KDE's Kate Settings arrives as Text("KDE"), GeneralRef("apos") and Text("s Kate Settings"). S3Provider::parse_bucket_names had no GeneralRef arm and pushed every Text piece as a bucket of its own (then sorted and deduplicated them), and its trim_text(true) trimmed each piece, so a & b would also have lost its spaces.

The fix joins the pieces from <Name> to </Name>, expands each reference with xml_text::xml_entity_to_str (named, decimal and hex: Go encoders and the Storj gateway write the apostrophe as &#39;), and keeps the name exactly as the server sent it, like parse_list_response does for object keys.

The class

A text reader with no Event::GeneralRef arm drops every reference in the text it reads. XML lets any character arrive as a numeric reference (1&#50;3 is a size of 123, a&#43;b a base64 secret), so no text is exempt. On main six functions matched Event::Text with no reference arm, and this PR fixes all six: each joins the pieces of a value (text, expanded references) and trims it once at its end tag, with trim_text off.

Function What it read wrong
s3.rs parse_bucket_names bucket names (#1461)
webdav.rs extract_single_file_entry (single-file mode) ETag and MIME type: SabreDAV (Nextcloud, ownCloud) writes an ETag as &quot;abc&quot;
jottacloud.rs parse_folder_xml size, md5, state, MIME type, dates
jottacloud.rs parse_jfs_file_revision size, md5, dates
jottacloud.rs parse_folder_tombstone_children size, md5, dates
sts.rs parse_assume_role_response key id, secret, session token, expiry

A seventh had a reference arm for one element only: jottacloud.rs parse_trash_xml expanded references in <abspath>, and read the revision's size, state and modified time in pieces. It is fixed the same way.

Not fixed here: seven more functions keep a reference arm for some elements and read other values in pieces: the Azure blob listings (size, metadata value, deleted flag), the two S3 version listings (IsTruncated: tr&#117;e reads as false and paging stops) and three WebDAV parsers (iscollection, and the status in the trash-bin and file-id listings). They are Requested 141 in the 4.2.6 tracker, with the value-level check that lists exactly these seven.

xml_entity_audit (test-only) reads the sources and asserts that the functions matching Event::Text with no Event::GeneralRef arm are exactly its ALLOWED list, in both directions. The list is empty, and its doc says what that does and does not mean: every text reader has a reference arm, not every value it reads is joined (Requested 141). Comments and string literals, raw byte and C strings included, are blanked before matching, and each arm belongs to its innermost function; the_scanner_reads_arms_in_code_only pins both. It reuses the source-scanning helpers of mtime_parse_audit (now pub(crate)).

Also from the review: the bucket goes into path-style URLs and every x-amz-copy-source encoded like a key (/ kept as a separator), so a gateway bucket named with #, ? or % addresses itself (bucket_path, copy_source).

Tests

  • list_buckets_parser_keeps_a_name_split_by_an_entity_whole: &apos;, &#39;, &#x27;, a &amp; b (spaces kept), &lt;/&gt;/&quot;, &amp;&amp;. On main it fails with ["KDE", "s Kate Settings"].
  • list_buckets_parser_lists_entity_names_beside_plain_ones: a real KDE bucket beside KDE's Kate Settings. On main: ["KDE", "photos", "s Kate Settings"].
  • list_buckets_parser_reads_a_captured_gateway_response: the ListBuckets body rclone serve s3 sent for three folders, captured on the wire (KDE&#39;s Kate Settings, a &amp; b, indented).
  • extract_single_file_entry_keeps_entities_in_the_props: ETag &quot;a&amp; &amp;b&#32;1&quot; and MIME text/plain; charset=&quot;utf-8&quot;.
  • parse_folder_xml_keeps_entities_in_element_text (state COMPLE&#84;ED, MIME with &quot; and &amp;), revision_scalars_keep_their_entity_references (both revision parsers), parse_trash_xml_keeps_entities_in_revision_scalars, assume_role_values_keep_their_entity_references.
  • path_style_bucket_names_reach_the_wire_whole: buckets with ', &, #, ?, %, %41 and /.
  • xml_entity_audit::every_xml_text_reader_also_reads_entity_references, the_scanner_reads_arms_in_code_only, and mtime_parse_audit::the_counter_sees_code_after_a_test_module (raw byte and C strings).

Each new test was red on the code before its fix. Local: full cargo test --lib passed on the first head (the 15 known L2 mcp_client_* environment failures pass with a real node first on PATH), the touched modules on every later head; cargo clippy --lib --tests -- -D warnings and cargo fmt clean. No Tauri command added.

Live check against rclone serve s3 in an isolated GUI instance: comment.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • S3 bucket names now correctly decode XML entity references while retaining spaces around them.
    • WebDAV file metadata now correctly decodes XML entities and preserves whitespace in values such as content types and ETags.
    • Jottacloud file details now correctly parse XML values containing entity references and surrounding whitespace, including size and MIME type.
    • STS credentials now parse correctly when XML entity references split values across text fragments.

An S3 bucket named "KDE's Kate Settings" appeared in the Quick Connect bucket picker as "s Kate Settings", next to a bucket "KDE" that does not exist (#1461). quick-xml hands element text over in pieces around each entity reference: `KDE&apos;s Kate Settings` arrives as Text("KDE"), GeneralRef("apos") and Text("s Kate Settings"). `parse_bucket_names` had no GeneralRef arm and pushed every Text piece as a bucket of its own; with `trim_text(true)` it also trimmed each piece, so `a &amp; b` would have lost its spaces. It now joins the pieces until `</Name>`, expands each reference with `xml_text::xml_entity_to_str` (named, decimal and hex, so the `&#39;` that Go encoders and the Storj gateway write as well) and keeps the name exactly as sent.

The class is every function that matches `Event::Text` without a `GeneralRef` arm. There were six. `extract_single_file_entry` (WebDAV single-file mode) dropped the `&quot;` that SabreDAV (Nextcloud, ownCloud) writes around an ETag, and around a quoted MIME parameter: fixed the same way, every piece kept and the scalars trimmed once at the end. The other four read no element text that can hold an entity and stay as they are: Jottacloud's `parse_folder_xml`, `parse_jfs_file_revision` and `parse_folder_tombstone_children` take names from attributes and read only sizes, hashes, states, MIME types and dates as text; `sts.rs` `parse_assume_role_response` reads base64 or JWT credentials and an RFC 3339 expiry.

`xml_entity_audit` pins the class: it reads the sources and asserts that the functions matching `Event::Text` with no `Event::GeneralRef` arm are exactly those four, each with its reason, in both directions. Comments and strings are blanked first and each arm belongs to its innermost function. Run against main's sources it names the six. It shares the source-scanning helpers of `mtime_parse_audit`, now `pub(crate)`.

Tests: the reproduction fails on main with ["KDE", "s Kate Settings"]; the forms `&apos;`, `&#39;`, `&#x27;`, `a &amp; b`, `&lt;`, `&gt;`, `&quot;`; a listing with a real "KDE" bucket beside "KDE's Kate Settings"; the ListBuckets body captured from `rclone serve s3`; a WebDAV ETag and MIME type with `&quot;`.

Live check on 293e9bf, in an isolated GUI instance (private HOME, display and session bus), against rclone serve s3 v1.75.2 on loopback serving three folders as buckets:

  • On the wire, ListBuckets returns <Name>KDE&#39;s Kate Settings</Name> and <Name>a &amp; b</Name>. That captured body is the fixture of list_buckets_parser_reads_a_captured_gateway_response.
  • Quick Connect, S3 Compatible, endpoint http://127.0.0.1:18461, Fetch: the bucket list offers exactly a & b, KDE's Kate Settings and photos ("Found 3 accessible targets"), with no KDE and no s Kate Settings. Same result after turning on path-style and fetching again.
  • KDE's Kate Settings picked from the list, profile saved, connected: the remote panel lists katerc (12 B), the object inside that bucket.

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Handle entity references in in parsefolderxml, then drop its ALLOWED entry.

32-38: Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff

Handle entity references in <mime> in parse_folder_xml, then drop its ALLOWED entry.

parse_folder_xml assigns each Event::Text piece of <mime> to current_mime, so only the last piece survives. The function has no Event::GeneralRef arm. A MIME value such as name=A&amp;B therefore keeps only B, and that value is stored as mime_type.

The ALLOWED entry for this function says MIME text holds no entity. The module doc in xml_entity_audit.rs lists MIME types among text that can hold an entity and says that text must accumulate its pieces. The entry contradicts that rule.

Removing the entry alone only makes the audit fail. The parser still drops the entity pieces.

Possible direction

Add an Event::GeneralRef arm to parse_folder_xml. In that arm, expand each reference with providers::xml_text::xml_entity_to_str and append the result to current_mime. Trim the joined value once at the end, not each piece, so that whitespace around entity pieces survives. Then remove the parse_folder_xml entry from ALLOWED. Add a fixture with &amp; inside a <mime> element. Current MIME fixtures contain no entities, so the truncation is latent.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base b73d1fde4163); the change keeps it reachable.

Nitpick Add a test with a raw space between ETag references.

8452-8453: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a test with a raw space between ETag references.

The new single-file test writes its only space as &#32;, so it exercises the entity-reference arm. The Event::Text arm of extract_single_file_entry appends whitespace-only fragments without filtering. No test sends a raw space between references through that parser. The existing whitespace tests use parse_propfind_response and the trashbin parser instead. A change that drops raw whitespace fragments in the single-file parser would therefore pass the suite. For a body containing &quot; &amp; &quot;, the ETag would become "&" instead of " & ". This is a coverage gap for behavior that works today. Add a case whose ETag contains a raw space between two references, and assert the decoded value.

Review of #1469: the guard counts MIME types among text that can hold an entity, yet allowed `parse_folder_xml`, which kept only the last Text piece of `<mime>`. A MIME parameter such as `name=&quot;A &amp; B&quot;` was reduced to what followed the last reference. Every scalar of that parser now accumulates its pieces (Text and expanded GeneralRef) per element and is applied, trimmed once, at its end tag; `trim_text` is off so spaces next to a reference survive. The ALLOWED entry is removed: three justified functions remain.

The WebDAV single-file test now also sends a raw space between two references (`&quot;a&amp; &amp;b&#32;1&quot;`), the whitespace-only piece the Text arm must keep.

@coderabbitai Both follow-up comments of review 5725248427 are addressed in c86e96a.

Handle entity references in <mime> in parse_folder_xml, then drop its ALLOWED entry.

Valid: the entry contradicted the module's own rule. parse_folder_xml now joins the pieces of each scalar element (Text, plus every GeneralRef expanded with xml_entity_to_str) in one buffer and applies the value, trimmed once, at the element's end tag, with trim_text off. That covers size, mime, md5, state, the dates and the file-level <deleted> alike, not only <mime>. The ALLOWED entry is gone; three justified functions remain. parse_folder_xml_keeps_entities_in_element_text sends <mime>text/plain; name=&quot;A &amp; B&quot;</mime> and a padded <size> 12 </size> and asserts text/plain; name="A & B" and 12. On the old code that MIME would have come out as B (last piece, references dropped): established by reading the old arm, not by running it.

Add a test with a raw space between ETag references.

Done: the ETag in extract_single_file_entry_keeps_entities_in_the_props is now &quot;a&amp; &amp;b&#32;1&quot; and must decode to "a& &b 1", so both the whitespace-only piece between the two &amp; and the &#32; reference are pinned.

Local: Jottacloud, single-file, guard and bucket tests 55 passed; cargo clippy --lib --tests -- -D warnings clean.

Handle entity references in tombstone revisions.

parse_folder_tombstone_children can store 3 instead of 123 for 1&#50;3. restore_folder_from_trash passes this value to post_cphash_restore, which sends it as JSize. The incorrect size can cause the restore request to fail.

This defect predates the PR. The audit exemption documents the omission but does not introduce or worsen it.

Split the state value with a numeric reference in the new test.

The parser decodes numeric references in state, but this fixture tests that behavior only for mime. Use COMPLE&#84;ED to cover the state value used by the completed-file listing gate.

We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The live revision reader now decodes and accumulates scalar references, but the supplied parse_jfs_file_revision and parse_folder_tombstone_children restore readers still assign individual Text events and have no GeneralRef handling. A reference-split tombstone MD5 could therefore yield an incomplete restore header.

The restore request can carry the wrong JMd5 and fail, leaving the file deleted.

This can occur when: Restoring a deleted file, directly or within a folder, whose JFS revision encodes a character of its MD5 as a numeric reference.

@axpnet Thanks. I inspected c86e96a84. Both follow-up changes match the review requests:

  • parse_folder_xml now accumulates text and expanded entity references, then trims scalar values once at the end tag. Its ALLOWED entry is removed. The new test checks the complete MIME value and padded size.
  • The WebDAV ETag test now includes a raw space between entity references and asserts "a& &b 1".

This addresses both concerns. I did not rerun tests or Clippy; the reported results are from your local run.

Review of #1469: `parse_folder_tombstone_children` read `<size>1&#50;3</size>` as 3, and that size goes into the cphash restore request. The guard had exempted it and three other functions because their element text was "only" sizes, hashes, dates or credentials, which hold no character that needs an entity. That was the wrong test: XML lets any character arrive as a numeric reference, and quick-xml then hands the value over in pieces, of which these functions kept the last.

`parse_jfs_file_revision` and `parse_folder_tombstone_children` now join each revision scalar's pieces (Text and expanded GeneralRef) and apply the value, trimmed once, at its end tag, like `parse_folder_xml`. `sts.rs` `parse_assume_role_response` joins each credential field's pieces and trims them once at the end, like `parse_error_response` in the same file. `trim_text` is off in all three. `xml_entity_audit`'s ALLOWED list is now empty; its doc says why "this text holds no entity" is no reason to fill it.

Tests: a revision with `1&#50;3`, `&#49;` inside an md5 with padding and `&#x5A;` in a date, through both Jottacloud parsers; an AssumeRole response with references in the key id, the secret and a padded session token.

@coderabbitai The follow-up of review 5725299419 is addressed in 5404ac2.

Handle entity references in tombstone revisions.

Valid, and wider than that one function. The guard's three remaining exemptions (parse_jfs_file_revision, parse_folder_tombstone_children and sts.rs parse_assume_role_response) all rested on "this text holds no character that needs an entity", and that is the wrong test: any character can arrive as a numeric reference. All three now join the pieces of each value (Text and expanded GeneralRef) and trim once at the end, with trim_text off. ALLOWED is empty, and its doc says why that reasoning no longer fills it. revision_scalars_keep_their_entity_references sends <size>1&#50;3</size>, an md5 with &#49; and padding, and a date with &#x5A; through both Jottacloud parsers and asserts 123 and the exact strings. assume_role_values_keep_their_entity_references does the same for the key id, the secret (secret&#43;key/EXAMPLE) and a padded session token.

The inline comment on unknown references is answered in its thread.

Local: Jottacloud, STS, guard, bucket and single-file tests 72 passed; cargo clippy --lib --tests -- -D warnings clean.

@axpnet I inspected 5404ac254. The changes address the tombstone revision concern and the same issue in STS:

  • Both Jottacloud parsers now accumulate Text and expanded GeneralRef pieces before trimming and parsing.
  • parse_assume_role_response now accumulates credential values and trims each completed value once.
  • ALLOWED is empty. The audit documentation rejects exemptions based on a value’s expected character set.
  • The new tests check numeric references in revision scalars and credentials, including padded values.

Your correction is valid: a restricted character set does not exclude XML numeric references.

I did not run tests or Clippy. The 72 passing tests and clean Clippy result are from your local run. I leave the unknown-reference discussion to its separate thread.

Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Encode the bucket before building path-style URLs.

build_url inserts self.config.bucket raw into the URL. The request builder receives that raw URL. The signer only decodes and re-encodes the parsed path for the signature; it does not change the request URL.

Therefore, a&b%20c can be sent as a path for bucket a&b c, not the literal bucket containing %20. Spaces, ampersands, and apostrophes do not independently establish a wrong-bucket result. Plain-space bucket handling was already unencoded before this PR.

Suggested fix
         if self.config.path_style {
+            let encoded_bucket = encode_s3_key_path(&self.config.bucket);
             // Path-style: https://endpoint/bucket/key
...
-                format!("{}/{}/", endpoint, self.config.bucket)
+                format!("{}/{}/", endpoint, encoded_bucket)
             } else {
-                format!("{}/{}/{}", endpoint, self.config.bucket, encoded_key)
+                format!("{}/{}/{}", endpoint, encoded_bucket, encoded_key)

Apply the same encoding to bucket values in the x-amz-copy-source paths. Keep virtual-hosted bucket values unencoded because they are used as the URL authority. Reusing encode_s3_key_path preserves the existing path-style compatibility for bucket values containing /.

A path-style URL put the bucket into the path raw, and so did every `x-amz-copy-source`. S3-compatible gateways accept bucket names AWS refuses, as #1461 showed with "KDE's Kate Settings": a `#` in such a name cut the path at a fragment, a `?` started the query, and a `%` read as an escape, so the request addressed some other bucket or none.

The bucket is now encoded like a key (`encode_s3_key_path`, so a `/` stays a separator and path-style `legacy/bucket` keeps working) in one place, `bucket_path`, and `copy_source` builds `/<bucket>/<key>` for the five copy sites (single and multipart server-side copy, the delta multipart upload, version restore, storage class change) instead of each formatting it. Virtual-hosted addressing is unchanged: there the bucket is a DNS label, already validated in `S3Provider::new`.

Test: for buckets with `'`, `&`, `#`, `?`, `%`, `%41` and `/`, the URL has no query or fragment and its path decodes to exactly `/<bucket>/<key>`, and the copy source decodes to `/<bucket>/<key>`. Red on the previous head (bucket inserted raw), green now.

`raw_string_open` refused an `r` preceded by an identifier character, which also refused the `r` of `br#"..."#` and `cr#"..."#`. Both source scanners then read such a literal from its first `"` as an ordinary string, so a quote inside it ended the string early: `code_only` left the rest of the literal as code (an `Event::GeneralRef(` in it would fake an arm), and `strip_test_modules` counted its braces.

The `r` now opens a raw string after a lone `b` or `c` prefix as well; both callers keep reading the prefix letter as code and the literal from its `r`.

Tests: `br#"a" Event::GeneralRef( "#` in the XML scanner case, and a `br` and a `cr` raw string holding `"}}` inside a test module in the mtime case. Both red with the old check, green now.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff finding in review 5725436439 (build_url inserts the bucket raw in path-style URLs): fixed in d1151a1.

The bucket now goes through bucket_path(), which is encode_s3_key_path(&self.config.bucket), so a / stays a separator and path-style keeps accepting legacy/bucket (pinned since #1398). The same raw insertion was in all five x-amz-copy-source headers (single and multipart server-side copy, the delta multipart upload, version restore, storage class change); they now share copy_source(key). Virtual-hosted addressing is unchanged: there the bucket is a DNS label, and S3Provider::new already rejects names that are not valid hosts.

Test path_style_bucket_names_reach_the_wire_whole: for buckets with ', &, #, ?, %, %41 and /, the URL has no query or fragment and its path decodes to exactly /<bucket>/<key>, and the copy source decodes the same way. Red with the raw bucket, green now.

@axpnet I inspected d1151a17d. The changes address the raw-bucket finding in src-tauri/src/providers/s3.rs.

  • build_url now encodes the path-style bucket through bucket_path(). It preserves / separators for legacy/bucket.
  • All five copy-source construction sites now use copy_source(key). Version restore still appends the encoded versionId.
  • path_style_bucket_names_reach_the_wire_whole covers the seven reported bucket names. It checks exact decoded paths and copy sources, plus the absence of URL queries and fragments.

The virtual-hosted branch is unchanged. I did not run tests; the red/green result is from your local run.

`parse_trash_xml` expanded entity references in `<abspath>` only. The revision's `size`, `state` and `modified` took each text piece as the whole value, so `<size>1&#50;3</size>` listed a trashed file as 3 bytes and a date lost everything before its `&#x5A;`. They are now joined in `current_text`, references expanded, and applied once at their end tag, as `parse_folder_xml` does.

The entity guard did not see it: it asks whether a text reader has a reference arm, and this one had an arm for another element. Its doc now says so, and that an empty ALLOWED list does not mean every value is read whole: seven other functions read a value in pieces next to such an arm (Azure blob listings, the two S3 version listings, three WebDAV parsers), tracked as Requested 141 in the 4.2.6 tracker with the value-level check that pins them.

Also from review 5725299419: the folder test spells `state` as `COMPLE&#84;ED`, so the completed-file gate reads a value joined across a reference.

Test: `parse_trash_xml_keeps_entities_in_revision_scalars` (size 123, the date equal to its plain form). Red with the previous parser (size 3), green now.

@coderabbitai Two items in the body of review 5725299419 were not answered until now. Both are addressed in f3d6143.

Follow up separately: accumulate trash size text.

Valid, and it covered the whole revision: parse_trash_xml expanded references in <abspath> only and took each text piece of size, state and modified as the whole value, so <size>1&#50;3</size> listed 3 (the last piece). They are now joined in current_text, references expanded, and applied once at their end tag, as parse_folder_xml does. parse_trash_xml_keeps_entities_in_revision_scalars asserts size 123 and a date equal to its plain form; it is red with the previous parser.

The guard missed it because it asks whether a text reader has a reference arm, and this one had an arm for another element. A value-level check (every value a text arm writes, a reference arm of the same function writes too) finds seven more functions with that shape: the Azure blob listings, the two S3 version listings (IsTruncated) and three WebDAV parsers. Those are not fixed in this PR; they are Requested 141 in the 4.2.6 tracker, together with that check. The guard's doc and the PR description now say that an empty ALLOWED means every text reader has a reference arm, not that every value is read whole.

Split the state value with a numeric reference in the new test.

Done: the fixture spells <state>COMPLE&#84;ED</state>, so the completed-file gate reads a joined value.

@axpnet I inspected f3d61431b. Both changes match the review requests.

  • parse_trash_xml now joins Text and expanded GeneralRef pieces for revision scalars. It trims and applies each completed value at the end tag.
  • parse_trash_xml_keeps_entities_in_revision_scalars checks size 123 and the date against its plain form. Its split COMPLE&#84;ED also exercises the completed-file gate.
  • The existing folder regression fixture now uses COMPLE&#84;ED.

The audit documentation correctly limits its guarantee. An empty ALLOWED establishes function-level reference handling, not complete handling of every value. This adds a value-level check to the existing XML review guidance.

I understand that the seven remaining functions and the stronger audit check are tracked under Requested 141. I did not verify that tracker entry.

I did not run tests or Clippy. The reported red/green result is from your local run.

Learning: Within repository "axpdev-lab/aeroftp", only for files matching one of ["src-tauri/src/xml_entity_audit.rs"]: When reviewing src-tauri/src/xml_entity_audit.rs or interpreting its results, check entity-reference coverage per parsed value, not merely the presence of an Event::GeneralRef arm in each function. For every scalar value populated from Event::Text, verify that the corresponding expanded GeneralRef pieces reach the same accumulated value before parsing or trimming. An arm that handles another element is insufficient. Do not treat an empty ALLOWED list in a function-level audit as proof that every value is read whole.

Any character can arrive as a decimal or hexadecimal XML numeric reference. Check that parsers consuming those values accumulate Text and expanded GeneralRef pieces before parsing or trimming rather than exempting them on that basis.
