AniList Journal

AniList Journal is a userscript that adds a Journal tab to AniList profile pages. The Journal collects anime and manga list notes into one readable view, so notes are easier to browse, search, sort, and edit without opening individual list entries.

Features

  • Adds a Journal tab between Manga List and Favorites on AniList profile navigation.
  • Fetches noted anime and manga entries from AniList's GraphQL API.
  • Shows entries as AniList-styled cards with cover art, title, media type, list status, score, progress, added date, updated date, and note text.
  • Filters entries by All, Anime, or Manga.
  • Searches across titles, notes, list names, and statuses.
  • Sorts by list updated date, added date, or title.
  • Supports English, Romaji, and Native title display, defaulting to English.
  • Lets you edit notes inline and save changes back to AniList.
  • Adapts to AniList's light and dark themes.
  • Handles refreshes on /journal by routing through the real AniList profile page and restoring the Journal view.
  • Caches note data briefly so the page remains usable when AniList is slow.

Installation

  1. Install a userscript manager such as Tampermonkey or Violentmonkey.
  2. Open the install URL: AniList-Journal.user.js.
  3. Confirm the install prompt in your userscript manager.
  4. Visit an AniList profile, such as https://anilist.co/user/your-name/.
  5. Open the new Journal tab in the profile navigation.

Updates

AniList Journal includes @updateURL and @downloadURL metadata that point to the Fastly-backed jsDelivr copy of the GitHub main branch file. Userscript managers such as Tampermonkey and Violentmonkey can use those URLs to check for updates and install the newest version automatically. The README install link may point to a specific commit so first-time installs are not affected by short-lived CDN lag on the moving main URL.

When publishing a change:

  1. Update AniList-Journal.user.js.
  2. Bump the @version value in the userscript header.
  3. Commit and push to the main branch.

Users who install from the Fastly jsDelivr URL should receive the update through their userscript manager's normal update checks.

Compatibility

This script is directly compatible with:

  • Tampermonkey
  • Violentmonkey
  • Greasemonkey, likely, though modern Greasemonkey can be stricter and should be tested
  • Userscripts app for Safari, likely with testing

It is not directly compatible as-is with:

  • Bookmarklets, because the script is too large and needs persistent route handling
  • DevTools snippets, because they can run manually but do not persist across pages or refreshes
  • Chrome or Edge extensions, because the logic would need to be wrapped as a content script with a manifest.json
  • Plasmo or WXT extension projects, because the code can be adapted but not dropped in unchanged

Best non-Tampermonkey alternatives for the current .user.js file are Violentmonkey first, then Greasemonkey.

Editing Notes

The Journal uses AniList's authenticated GraphQL behavior for note edits. You must be signed into AniList in the browser where the userscript is running. If saving fails, refresh AniList or sign in again, then retry.

Notes On Sorting Dates

AniList exposes list entry createdAt and updatedAt values. The Journal uses those for added-date and updated-date sorting. AniList does not expose a separate note-created date, so "updated" means the list entry's last updated time.

Disclaimer

AniList Journal is an unofficial userscript and is not affiliated with AniList. It is provided as-is for personal use with AniList profiles and list notes. Use it responsibly and at your own risk.
