Summary

av orphan now prompts for confirmation when it would orphan more than one branch, mirroring the trunk-context prompt pattern from av sync. A --yes / -y flag skips the prompt for scripted use.

Why this matters

From #733:

Running av orphan from the trunk branch (e.g. master) drops every av-managed branch in the repo with no confirmation. First-time users have no way to predict this from the command name or current help text, and recovery means re-adopting each branch one-by-one.

av sync already has the right pattern at cmd/av/sync.go:169-183, where the trunk-from-trunk case prompts "You are on the trunk, do you want to sync all stacks?" This patch mirrors that for multi-branch / trunk-context orphan operations.

Changes

  • cmd/av/orphan.go: predicate + prompt + --yes flag, listing branches that will be orphaned
  • cmd/av/orphan_test.go: new unit tests for prompt-denied / prompt-accepted / single-branch / --yes paths
  • e2e_tests/orphan_test.go: updated to thread through the new prompt

Single-branch orphans from a feature branch are unchanged (no prompt). Pattern matches cmd/av/sync.go:169-183.

Fixes #733

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • When av orphan selects multiple managed branches, it asks for confirmation before deleting their metadata. Choose No to cancel, or Yes to continue.
    • Use av orphan --yes to skip the prompt and proceed. A single selected branch does not require confirmation.
    • If confirmation is needed but no terminal is available, the command lists the selected branches and instructs you to pass --yes.
    • The command reports the orphaned branches. Git branches are left unchanged.

Code Review

This pull request introduces an interactive confirmation prompt when orphaning multiple branches using the av orphan command, along with a --yes flag to bypass the prompt. The core logic has been refactored into collectBranchesToOrphan and orphanBranches functions, and a new test case verifies that denying the prompt prevents the orphaning process. A typo was identified in the success message where 'branched' should be 'branches'.

Merged master (0f36e08). #695 replaced e2e_tests/orphan_test.go with testdata/script/orphan.txtar, so I dropped the Go file and moved this PR's change there: the script orphans two branches, so it now runs av orphan --yes. Master also moved to charm.land/bubbletea/v2, so the confirmation view model now returns a tea.View, and the unit test sends tea.KeyPressMsg{Code: ...}. go test ./... passes, including TestScript/orphan and TestOrphanFromTrunkDeniedPromptDoesNotOrphanBranches.

Walkthrough

The orphan command now collects the current branch and its managed descendants before changing metadata. When multiple branches are selected, it requires confirmation unless --yes is set. Without a terminal or --yes, it returns an error.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #733 requires confirmation before av orphan commits changes for more than one branch. cmd/av/orphan.go collects the current branch and managed descendants, lists them in the prompt, and prompts before orphanBranches commits the transaction. A denied prompt leaves metadata unchanged. Non-interactive execution refuses without --yes; --yes and -y support scripted use. Single-branch execution remains direct. The success message now uses These branches are orphaned. Tests cover denial and the non-interactive and --yes paths.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #733. The command adds multi-branch confirmation, affected-branch listing, non-interactive protection, and the suggested --yes/-y bypass. The tests verify these behaviors. The change does not implement the separate #720 explicit-branch feature.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 60.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Add a command-level denied-prompt test.

orphanCmd.RunE prompts only when len(branchesToOrphan) > 1 && !orphanFlags.Yes at cmd/av/orphan.go:49-56. The added test bypasses RunE and tests orphanConfirmViewModel directly. The script uses av orphan --yes, which bypasses the same branch. A regression that calls orphanBranches directly for the default trunk invocation could therefore pass both tests.

Add a command-level test that invokes av orphan from trunk with multiple branches, denies the prompt, and asserts that the branches remain adopted.

Without a terminal, `av orphan` from trunk waited on a prompt nobody
could answer and never returned. It now refuses with a hint to pass
--yes, and the orphan script checks that from trunk: the command fails
and every branch stays in the tree.

On the CodeRabbit nitpick about a command-level denied-prompt test: writing it turned up a real problem. With no terminal on stdin (the script harness runs av with </dev/null), av orphan from trunk opened the prompt and waited forever. In 5d13b68 it now refuses instead: refusing to orphan N branches without confirmation; pass --yes to orphan .... orphan.txtar covers this end to end: from main it runs av orphan without --yes, expects the failure, and checks that stack-1, stack-2 and stack-3 are all still in av tree. On the old code that step hangs. go test ./... passes.

With stdout redirected RunBubbleTea drops the renderer, so the prompt
was invisible and Enter could select the default unseen. Match the
stdin and stdout check sync already uses.
