GitHub now runs actions built for Node 20 on Node 24 and warns on every run. ubuntu-latest also moves to Ubuntu 26.04 starting October 19, 2026.

  • Move every action that targets Node 20 or older to a release that targets Node 24
  • Pin ubuntu-latest to ubuntu-24.04 so the runner image does not change underneath these workflows
  • Replace the archived actions-rs/*, XAMPPRocky/*, dawidd6/action-get-tag, and actions/upload-release-asset actions. Rust comes from dtolnay/rust-toolchain, cross from taiki-e/install-action, and releases are created and uploaded with gh. Release asset names are unchanged

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Release Process
    • Windows, macOS, and Linux builds now upload their assets to the release associated with the tag. The release is reused when it already exists, including when multiple platform jobs attempt to create it at the same time.
  • Chores
    • Updated the CI build and test workflows across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Linux workflows now run on Ubuntu 24.04, and macOS tests and builds run directly with Cargo.

GitHub now forces Node 20 actions onto Node 24 and warns on every
run. Move each action to a release that targets Node 24, and pin
ubuntu-latest to ubuntu-24.04 so the runner image does not change
when ubuntu-latest moves to Ubuntu 26.04 on October 19, 2026.

📝 Walkthrough

The CI and deployment workflows remove the shared cross artifact job. CI installs or invokes build tools within target jobs. Deployment jobs use gh to create or reuse tag releases and upload target-specific assets.

Changes: Rust CI and releases

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cross-platform CI jobs
.github/workflows/mean_bean_ci.yml
The workflow removes the shared install-cross job. Linux installs cross directly and passes it to the build and test scripts. macOS installs the stable Rust toolchain and runs cargo test directly.
Target builds and release uploads
.github/workflows/mean_bean_deploy.yml
Windows, macOS, and Linux jobs remove the install-cross dependency. Linux installs cross directly. The jobs use gh to create or reuse the tag release and upload target-specific assets. The scripts check for an existing release after a failed creation attempt.

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to aa48d

The release workflows now use maintained actions and the gh CLI. Build steps in tagged releases can still access a token that is allowed to modify releases. The earlier workflow probably had similar exposure. Consider separating publication from building. The remaining risk is limited.

Limit contents: write to release publication. Each job grants a release-writing token before it builds the asset. actions/checkout@v7 persists that token for later steps by default. If a build dependency is compromised, its build code can obtain the token and modify releases. Disable persisted checkout credentials, and publish the built assets from a separate job with contents: write. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
