The cross sets a generation computes, the letters that make the run of tiles through each square a word, down and across, were read only inside it, so a caller asking a board's hooks looked each letter up in the word graph again. gen_hooks computes them for every row and column of a board, under classic rules and jumbled ones, and gives each square's.
