But I have checked the email address and it will never receive the email verification code. Do we need to do something special to get emails?

And if yes, could we inform the user somehow as now it's unclear why the user will not receive the email

For self-hosted installs, the email-verification screen should probably detect when SMTP is not configured or delivery fails and say that explicitly. The backend already acknowledges the send attempt, but users need to know whether a message was handed to an SMTP server, rejected, or skipped because mail settings are missing. A setup checklist item plus a visible resend failure message would make this much easier to diagnose.
