Changes to combine LPs of multiple G / F Operators into a set of LPs, instead of discarding them.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added command-line controls for LP diagnostic output, simplification rules, and permutation limits.
    • Expanded temporal query simplification to account for multiple paths and temporal operators, with configurable rule selection.
    • Added checks for final-state conditions and bounded next-step behavior during simplification.
    • Added visibility into the negated formula before LTL query reduction.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Alternating universal and existential path quantifiers now produce an error rather than being processed as supported queries.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds path-aware temporal simplification, temporal program collections, and LP checks across paths. It also adds options for simplification rules, LP diagnostic output, and permutation limits.

Changes: Temporal and path-aware simplification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Path-aware context and options
include/PetriEngine/PQL/Contexts.h, include/PetriEngine/options.h, src/PetriEngine/PQL/Contexts.cpp, src/PetriEngine/options.cpp, src/VerifyPN.cpp
SimplificationContext stores path counts, rule flags, LP print settings, and permutation limits. Option parsing accepts these settings, and query entry points pass them into the context.
Path-aware LP construction and checks
include/PetriEngine/Simplification/LinearProgram.h, include/PetriEngine/Simplification/Member.h, include/PetriEngine/Simplification/Vector.h, src/PetriEngine/Simplification/LinearProgram.cpp
LP construction and equation writing use path-aware variables and constraints. New checks cover final constraints, permutations, and bounded firing steps.
Temporal program collections
include/PetriEngine/Simplification/LinearPrograms.h, src/PetriEngine/Simplification/LinearPrograms.cpp
Program collections use temporal contexts and merge buffers to group programs into timepoints, retrieve programs, and check satisfiability across temporal operators.
Temporal rules and path-indexed constraints
include/PetriEngine/PQL/Simplifier.h, src/PetriEngine/PQL/Simplifier.cpp
The simplifier tracks temporal operators and path selection. Temporal conditions use rule-aware simplification, and satisfiability checks receive temporal context.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 8a127

Resolve the potency memory-safety and temporal-overapproximation risks before merging. Temporal simplification can also add an unexpected line to normal output.

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 8a127

The expanded constraint representation reaches potency initialization without a matching increase in buffer capacity. Suitable model and query inputs can cause out-of-bounds writes in the verifier process. The demonstrated scope is process-local; remote exploitation or additional privileges are not established.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: The new LP variable layout violates the potency serializer’s capacity contract. With T transitions, memberForPlace can produce T transition coefficients plus a nonzero place coefficient. solvePotency still allocates T+1 row slots, including unused slot zero, while write_indir starts writing at index one without checking capacity. An equation with T+1 nonzero coefficients consequently writes beyond the vector. PotencyVisitor continues to forward place-bound constraints through this consumer when initialization is enabled and time remains. The new multi-path rejection does not protect this single-path route. The base producer was transition-only, so this PR introduces the incompatible producer-consumer combination.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is the verifier process processing suitable model and query inputs. Out-of-bounds writes threaten that process’s memory integrity and availability. No supplied deployment evidence establishes remote ingestion, cross-tenant exposure, or elevated execution privileges.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An input author controlling a net and a surviving place-bound query can influence the equation’s nonzero coefficient count. If potency initialization reaches an equation with more nonzero coefficients than transitions, serialization exceeds the row buffer before the LP solver executes. This is a source-established memory-safety path, not a reproduced exploit or evidence of code execution.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The base LP explicitly creates place columns, so place-variable indexes alone do not establish an invalid solver-column access. The remaining capacity defect occurs in the host buffer before matrix submission; neither the single-path restriction nor timeout checks validate that capacity.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Traversal resets and conservative timeout results provide some containment for interrupted checks, but they do not contain memory writes performed during equation serialization. Resource budgets are not substitutes for representation-capacity validation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make variable layout and serialization capacity explicit across LP producers and consumers, with capacity-aware writes or dynamically sized serialization storage. Reject incompatible layouts before writing rather than relying on each consumer to preserve historical sizing assumptions.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Size solvePotency buffers by the new base-variable count to prevent a heap overflow.

memberForPlace and memberForPathPlace now add a place-variable column next to the transition columns. A constraint Vector can therefore have up to |T|+|P| nonzeros. solvePotency still allocates row with nCol + 1 = |T| + 1 entries. write_indir writes dest[l] for every nonzero, so it writes past the end of row when a constraint has more than |T| nonzeros. For example, a net with 1 transition and the query p1+p2+p3 < 5 gives 4 nonzeros. SingleProgram::explorePotencyImpl reaches this path during RPFS or RandomWalk potency initialization.

🐛 Proposed fix
-            const uint32_t nCol = net->numberOfTransitions();
-            assert(potencies.size() == nCol);
-            const uint32_t nRow = net->numberOfPlaces() + _equations.size();

+            const uint32_t nCol = context.getNumBaseVariables();
+            const uint32_t nRow = context.getNumBaseConstraints() + _equations.size();

Keep the objective loop and the potencies loop over nTrans (Lines 1001 and 1028), not nCol.

Correct the LP help text and document -lpl.

Line 217 ends with a stray } ("constraints and solutions}"). The parser accepts -lpl, --lp-permutation-limit at Lines 452-458, but printHelp does not list that option. Users cannot discover the permutation limit or its default of 128.

Push npsi_2 (the G-tagged copy) into the release union, not npsi.

The comment above the function defines the result as G(!psi) ∨ F(!psi ∧ !phi). The code creates npsi_2 with operator G and then never uses it. It pushes npsi instead, which has no G tag. The same npsi object is also the left child of conj. MergeCollection and UnionCollection both call reset()/merge() on that shared object, so their iteration states can interfere.

Replace the assignment operator_parent = LPOP::NONE with ==.

LPOP::NONE is 0, so the expression is always false and is_strict_next is always false. The assignment also overwrites operator_parent as a side effect. The strict parameter is currently unused in simplify_simple_quantifier<XCondition>, so the effect now is the clobbered state. The bug will take effect when strict is used.

Make compile_program idempotent; a second call fails the assert in debug builds.

apply_operator calls compile_program() for X and F. When a MergeCollection or UnionCollection has _operator == X, merge compiles buf.time_path and keeps it as the current timepoint. MergeCollection::satisfiableImpl then calls buf.compile_program() again at Line 586, and assert(!time_path->is_compiled) fails. X(a ∧ b) triggers this with nontrivial a and b. Release builds skip the assert and run the compile again, which does no harm.

288-289 and the program-size, “next lps,” and “is next” prints in
`Simplifier.cpp` lines 112, 147, and 720 so simplification output does not
pollute or interleave with normal stdout.

🟡 Minor · Restore the enclosing path after visiting a nested selection. · Simplifier.cpp:927-939

src/PetriEngine/PQL/Simplifier.cpp:927-939
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restore the enclosing path after visiting a nested selection.

ConstraintVisitor::_accept(const PathSelectExpr*) resets _current_path to zero after visiting its child. For a nested selection inside an outer integer-difference, the next operand is therefore assigned to path 0 instead of the outer path. The generated constraint can then use the wrong path segment and cause incorrect simplification.

Suggested fix
         else{
+            const int old_path = _current_path;
             _current_path = element->offset();
             Visitor::visit(*this, element->child());
-            _current_path = 0;
+            _current_path = old_path;
         }

🟡 Minor · Move the assertion after the multi-path fallback. · Simplifier.cpp:1156-1162

src/PetriEngine/PQL/Simplifier.cpp:1156-1162
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Move the assertion after the multi-path fallback.

The LTL query-reduction path counts nested PathQuant nodes and passes that count to SimplificationContext. It then sends the condition to PetriEngine::PQL::simplify. For multiple paths, the assertion aborts before the fallback returns the unchanged CompareConjunction in assertion-enabled builds.

Suggested fix
-        assert(_context.numPaths() == 1);
         if(_context.numPaths() != 1){
             std::cerr << "CompareConjunction simplification for HyperLTL is not implemented \n";
             RETURN(Retval(std::make_shared<CompareConjunction>(*element, _context.negated())))
         }
+        assert(_context.numPaths() == 1);

132-132: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Return early from compile_program on a compiled timepoint. Do not only comment out the assert.

A previous review reported that compile_program runs twice when _operator == X. This change comments out the assert, so the second call now runs the merge again. On that second call, free_lps holds one merged entry. It goes back through make_union together with the global program. That pass does no harm only when global_lps is empty. The code also dereferences time_path without a null check. lpsImpossible shows that time_path can be null.

🐛 Proposed fix
-            //assert(!time_path->is_compiled);
+            if(!time_path || time_path->is_compiled)
+                return;
             time_path->is_compiled = true;

Remove the unguarded empty path output.

MergeCollection::merge can advance an F timepoint, and MergeCollection::satisfiableImpl can apply the F context again to the empty current timepoint. This writes empty path to stdout without checking lpPrintLevel. The tool uses stdout for FORMULA and STATE_SPACE records, so this untagged line can pollute the output protocol.

A single empty SingleProgram stores an entry in final_lps; it is not itself the direct trigger.
